@@kkrampage It does and doesn't, if ye listen to the Cure from the same era and prior to the Sound, you'll see that they nailed what Borland couldn't/didn't.
The structure of the beginning alone is enough to consider this band the greatest in Post-Punk. How the bass, then the drums, then the guitar and then Adrian's voice starts is inimitable. Perfect balance between atmosphere and rawness.
Powerful, raw, emotional and vaguely threatening. Adrian's emphasis on personal agency here is very unique in my opinion. He can't make the decision for you, but he can encourage you to take whatever measures available and improve your lot in life. "What are we gonna do? I'm asking, I'm asking you." an all time classic track. gets better with every listen. dark , urgent - and yet still packs a great pop hook. Is there a more criminally underrated 80s band?
@@nsny24 Agreed. I quite like The Chameleons too, but The Sound is probably one of the most monumental bands ever to sadly go mostly unnoticed. They're damn near untouchable!
@@massivegat5087 I agree, damn near untouchable. I can appreciate the Chameleons but next to the Sound they 'sound' dated. There's a sense of urgency with Adrian and his lyrics. Also, he refused to promote the band through commercial music videos when everyone else was doing it. The band didn't go for happier sounding pop tunes either which was a must in the 80s top 40 radio. I suppose they were too genuine and there's a price to pay for being so. But admire them for being true to themselves.
@@nsny24 Same here. Adrian was extremely devoted to his music and under no circumstances would he and the band ever 'sell-out'. I hear All Fall Down was born from that desire to not conform to industry norms and the demands of their record label, creating an inherently anti-commercial LP. I don't think it's as bad as critics say either, I don't find the record to be hard to get into, it's just not a pop record; none of their stuff is. It's clear that songs like Party of the Mind would never receive radio play and that's okay. They kept true to themselves. On some days I actually enjoy Second Layer more than The Sound, Adrian and Graham's side project is bloody brilliant. So cold and almost wicked in a way, it's quite something! Just another example of them doing as they please and not compromising themselves and their vision at the behest of an overbearing label or the chances of commercial success. We lucky few who know of The Sound and Adrian's larger body of work are blessed. He is sorely missed.
@@massivegat5087 Not much i could add to your great reply. Party of the Mind is one of my favorites as well as Where the Love Is. That album is easy to get into if you have good taste in music. Same for me since 1982. I am so happy to still have the vinyl album , although I have no record player anymore. I keep the album just as a perfect memory of this incredible band. And as a bonus the album has the songtexts in the inside.
