I spent way too much at GGG on Black friday sales. Some was needed to replace old items, upgrade, or simply splurge. 😂. The pillow, I have zero regrets about buying a Zenbivy sheet and just keeping the fillo while added comfort to my Rapide pad.
To keep my pillow on my sleep pad I just put my T-shirt over the sleep pad and slip my pillow underneath, this also allows you to stack other stuff under your pillow if you’re a side sleeper and need a taller pillow for a while. No extra weight.
Same, use a t-shirt like abed sheet on your pad, put your pillow underneath and then you have a secure pillow and a bedsheet to keep your face from drooling on your pad 😂

VELCRO!!! I put 4 small squares on my pillow and inflatable pad. It weighs nothing and holds the pillow in place. I keep them attached when deflating and inflating so the velcro doesn't get dirty. Simple, cheap and weighs nothing.(less than a tenth of an oz) Not sure why people don't think of this

After nearly four decades of camping, hiking, and backpacking the coolest thing I’ve got are my UCO candle lanterns.
I discovered the canister refill valve two years ago and absolutely love it. The best way is to lightly warm up the giving canister and cool down the receiving one. Also, I measured the full and empty weight of all my canisters, so I can know how much gas they have by weighing them.
The sawyer bag is pretty easy to fill when you make sure to fill it with air first by blowing it up with your mouth, and while filling, the air must be able to escape again, so don't cover the entire opening under water. I like how strong and light it is. It's not easy to puncture even if you tried on purpose.
Some more gear:
- knifepointgear saw although I prefer to simply use a silky gomtaro replacement blade and paracord wrap a handle on it
- Clipper lighters! They have many advantages over bics
- suunto clipper mini compass
- UG tools Tiny knife (expensive but very lightweight for a knife with top performance)
- fancy feast stoves. Maybe the best alcohol stove design and the best part is you can easily make it yourself.
- badgers balm...best stuff to put on your feet in very wet weather to avoid macerations
- benzoin tincture. This stuff makes leucotape P stick crazy good to your feet
- sealskin sock...socks with a breathable waterproof membrane. Awesome for water crossings
- Omm chest rig and should strap pocket

My leatherman sidekick multitool. I can cut open packs of food, saw some wood so i can later on make a spoon, use the can opener for canned beans, that i turn into my alcohol stove, best stuff ever.

I would love to see an experiment with the flipfuel at 3:43 trying to overfill a small gas cannister - you know, for science. Is it dangerous, how dangerous is it and where is the limits of these canisters when using this super cool gadget with out a weight or way to ensure you are within the recommended tolerance. The Flipfuel tool is great for the consumer, cost effective and environmentally sound.

@@MyLifeOutdoors Try heating the delivering cylinder with boiling water and freezing the receiver and see what happens. Well, it sure transfers ALL the gas across...but does very worrying things to the receiver...
@@FraserRobertTorpy I usually put the receiving one in the freezer for an hour or so and the giving onto a radiator in my home. Putting it into boiling water sound pretty extreme. The best advice I can give it to weigh the full and empty canister. So you can always know the exact content of each canister.
@@jimihenrik11 Yeah, it was way, way too much temperature difference. Just warming up the delivery cylinder in warm tap water is fine. I got very incomplete transfer just freezing the receiver and leaving the delivery one at room temp. Boiling water sure got 100.0% transfer, but wrecked the receiver. Was pretty dangerous really :)
The Prairie Trowel! Love that little thing ❤
Really easy to make (Myog) a Prarie-Dog trowel out of 0.5mm (0.020") titanium. Titanium that thin cuts with steel-shears and it bends fairly easy.
Titanium cuts into dirt way better than aluminum.
Holes aren't as functional as presented. Few are going to saw sticks to turn Prairie into a shovel. However the Prairie shape is way more comfortable in hand than any other trowel shape. Use a bit of blue painter's tape to protect hand end.
If you have a Snow Peak 700, that S2S mug will make a tight lid so you can have the option to cold-soak. Also, the mug can be used to steam-bake a muffin if you bring some foil or another lid to go over the top.
The colapsable mug as a lid is a great idea. I have it and the same toaks pot already. I like dual use for things I'm already carrying anyway. Although, the lid literally only weighs 0.5 oz. So it's not really a big weight savings lol

Like the pillow strap. I use a buff over my nemo fillo with a surplus elastic belt from an old pair or walking trousers threaded through( not my idea).Works well. Love the channel .Simon UK😉

Yes to the pillow strap, at last a solution for us side sleepers! I sleep with my arm under my pillow, and I've never found something that keeps it in place without blocking the spot where my arm needs to go. Already ordered it for my Nemo Fillow--thanks!
I like the saw and the trowel, though I'm more interested in those reusable zip ties.
I have to say im blessed that i really enjoy using my S2S drybag with spare clothes in it as a pillow. At most i can cover it with a shirt for texture and since its not made of air it dosnt wonder away like the terible air pillows.
More gear: Reflectex as a bag/quilt liner. Cut Reflectex to body shape & size. Place on top of body under bag/quilt- it will warm you up in about 5-10 minutes. Costs about $10 and is multi purpose. Weighs about 4-6 oz, cheaper, lighter and warmer than thermal bag liners.
Its not "ultra light" but most box stores sell cookie mix with cast iron skillet combos for about $5-$8. All you need to do is season the skillet and you have a bomb proof little skillet for cooking with. I have had mine for a few years now and it will never leave my gear list.
If you want something equally functional but a lot lighter look for carbon steel pans, its a bit more expensive than cast iron but not prohibitively expensive
My coolest piece of gear is the collapsible solar powered lantern. Hangs on the outside of my pack while walking, then opens up as a lantern at night. It's such a brilliantly thought out thing!!

I love that saw! Knife/saw combos are barely adequate. Now I can have an improved saw with replaceable blade along with a dedicated knife. Saws are great for clearing out a camping spot especially in an emergency.

Great video. CNOC bags are great. The pad strap thing is nice. My new ExPed doesn’t have a strap and the cover can maybe also take a little extra padding and material to eliminate the ballon effect.

Love this one. During your intro i was thinking about what id submit for consideration and felt like it was boring to say my CNOC. Then boom, you had it! Ive been using the 3L for at least 3-4 years and its so awesome. Perfect fornthe sawyer and i also usually do a makeshift gravity system by hanging the cnoc from a tree/similar by the included hooks. Woth 3L its way more than enough to hydrate at camp and allow at least a few folks to have cooking water wothout everyone fighting the fill their crappy sawyer bags.
Instead of those silicone pot bands, I have a stretchy silicone cover (“universal lid”) that I picked up for $2. It fits over my 750mL Ti pot and makes it completely spillproof - essentially a Vargo Bot at a 98% discount. I use it for cold soaking my food, as I can fill it with food and water, stretch on the cover, and put it back in my pack for a couple hours without worrying about it spilling

A month or two ago, I bought a dog bowl set from the 99c store for about 3 or 4.99, it is accordion-style collapsible silicon, and has two (2) bowls that remove from the holder ! Sometimes they even have climbing chalk (rosen/resin) bags (car cup holders)

I find with the Nemo fillo that if I stand it up it stays in place great. Plus I’m using the synergy sheet with my thermarest so it helps with the slippage.

Love the pot hack and cup
I use a piece of leftover shock cord a little over a foot to strap my fillo to my pad. I just tie it around the end loop and use the internal stuff sack cinch to adjust it around where I need it. It barely weighs anything and I can store it in the internal stuck sack the pillow already has. I got the shock cord from litesmith for about 24 cents a foot.
My DIY trowel is based on the typical plastic trowel. I removed the handle, cut an ovalated horizontal hole below the removed handle for three of my fingers and glued a strip of leather through the hole and top of the former handle for added comfort. The problem with a trowel having a handle is that your wrist has excessive force applied to it during digging. With the method I've described, you're digging straight from your arm through your hand which reduces stress applied to one's wrist.
That pop trowel is genius. Mind you, you could easily drill holes in an existing trowel for using zip ties. 👍🏻
Carrying duct tape: I cut out a piece from a smooth side of a plastic (or cardboard) milk carton. A piece about 2” wide, and 4”-6” long works nicely. Wrap on a few yards of tape. The bundle is bendable, and packs in small places.

Hydrapak Seeker range for water storage, and flexible bottle. 42mm screw top opening. Easy to fill, pour from and filter with their new Filter (super fast filtering). Will never go back to hoses and water bladders.
My favorite piece of gear is a little silicone collapsible funnel I got from walmart. It will fit in my toaks 750 pot wit fuel can, BRS stove, lighter and 1/4 of a bandana that acts as a pot holder. Im not a big breakfast guy but know I gotta eat so I mix up NIdo and carnation breakfast packets and stick a serving in a bag and then put into a water bottle. Funnel makes it easier.
Second favorite one is with my smart water bottles. Sports bottles have flip caps so I get those. But regular smart bottles have blue lids and alkaline units black ones. I carry one bottle in each color. Blue is my "pure" water bottle only water goes in this bottle so there is no "funk" if I use for dinner water. The black one is my mix bottle. There is no weight difference just color. Makes life for me simplier.

The smallest of those Crossbands weighs twice as much as my Tread Lite Gear DCF pot bag! And that X-Mug weighs a whopping 60g! (My Titanium lid for the Toaks Light 650ml Ti pot weighs 16.8g and my Wildo Fold a Cup weighs 24.3g, a total of only 41.1g).
And even the small Pillow Strap weighs more than my Exped pillow! BTW, the best way to keep your pillow in place under your head all night is to simply put it in the hood of your sleeping bag...But you can't do that with a quilt!
So many grams, how can one possible carry the weight? lol

you you do a video reviewing a normal hammock with a underquil with a tarp and everything needed of course to see if it would make some kind of good setup for winter
One piece of gear I always use is a 15inch BBQ fork, use it to cook sausage, hot dogs, SPAM, and steak over the fire, just prop it up with a couple rocks. For steak, it works best with a strip steak and stick fork into side of steak. Put 2 pieces of 1/4inch tubing over fork prongs before sticking in pack.
Great variety of gear. The one that i am most interested in is the pillow strap.
Those sawyer bags dont work well if the water isnt flowing. Love the cnoc bags for sawyer filters instead.
I still dont get what is so impressive with the toaks cup. I get that it is lightweight and has handles. What else am i missing? I use the GSI Outdoors Halulite Minimalist cookset. I ditch their spoon but keep the rest. The silicone gripper works very well. I have never burned myself using it. The cozy works amazing. It keeps the contents HOT for a long time even in freezing temperatures. Flip the lid and place it on top while you boil water to trap some heat in for boiling the water. I highly recommend it. For the past 7 years I have not found a minimalist cook system that beats this. I use this to boil water and drink hot beverages out of.
I have 8inch reusable zip ties that i use on windy nights to fortify my hiking pole with my other collapsed hiking pole for my altaplex. I just use cascadia cork handle poles but they are to their height limit for the altaplex. They work perfectly tho.... Id have a much larger problem taking the time to use a saw to cut then
zip tie a handle onto my poop scoop!
I like to use the twig burning stoves ( The Titanium Firebox Nano Gen 2 ) and to get the ( dead/ dried ) wood I use a Swiss Army knife. The saw blade is a push/pull 3. 1/2 inch blade. Plus there is a wide selection of other tools with the knife. One item with a lot of uses.
I know an item. The ultimate lightest waterproof gloves to keep your other gloves dry while walking, for just a couple uses , are the free plastic gloves you get at a gas station. At least in Europe.

easy way to carry duct tape is to wrap about 2 layers around many of your round items. then get a flat plastic card and wrap a bunch around that stores nice and flat taking up very little space.

To this day, I'm extraordinarily pleased whenever I get to use my Titanium spork. The plastic ones all suck, bend, and I broke it on too hard fruits. It seemed like an indulgence at the time and I have no regrets.
I also have a lanyard that works with any phone case - an inlay that pushes a small hook through the charging port. Nobody wants to drop their phone down a cliff on the trail!
I still use the Snowpeak Ti spork from my 2001 AT thru-hike. I was backpacking last weekend with my two sons (8 and 3). They couldn’t believe my spork was 22 years old. I have to think but it’s probably my oldest continuously used piece of gear.

Tried to use the Sea to Summit X-Mug as a lid on my Snow Peak 3ml Ti pot sitting on an
Evernew Ti DX alcohol stove stand. Managed to melt the plastic rim of the mug that
hung over the pot rim just a smidge. Glad I tried it at home before taking it to the field.
Did you find the small or medium PillowStrap fit the Nemo Fillow better?

For about $30 you can get a Swiss Army Camper knife. The saw is 3 inches and is exceptional. It also includes 2 knife blades, a can opener, wine opener, screw drivers, and sewing awl. Yeah it's not cool or new, but it's stupidly useful for so little money.
that saw handle looks awesome. I'm going to steal that idea and 3d-print myself one. I do wish it would take a reciprocating saw blade instead of a jigsaw blade because you can get blade that's slightly longer.
well if you're going to 3d print something print a handle that will accept a standard hack saw blade also the best sawzall blades are made by Lenox

Best gear video I ever seen. But I find wrapping about 4- 5ft of duck tape around a bussiness card to be the best. It's flat and typically more then enough when you need it.
I switched to rechargeable, waterproof plasma Arc lighters by SOL & Tesla. Indefinite source of Fire if you have a small solar panel.
My little hack for snow trips is wrap the duct tape around my power bank: extra insulation
Straped down pillow sounds like a nightmare to me as a side sleeper, how am I suppose to get my arm particially under under it without my arm getting tangled turning around while sleeping? For me best thing would be a rectangular sleepeing bag (forgott what the english name is for this type of sleeping bags) with a freaking hood. My summer bag has a slighty longer buttom side with oval shape, but it´s no hood just extra space to put a pillow. I even use my sleeping bags at home as blankets, the climate is so much more pleasant than my regular one even that´s a supposily good one.

What is your view on using military surplus gear for camping/backpacking?
The only advantage is the cheap price. It's heavy, bulky, and often cuts corners on design and functionality in favour of cost savings and ruggedness.
If you're aim is a hard painful workout that's where you go. Its more fit for survivalists. Regular mountain backpacking and long trail folks would probably get little to nothing there. Truth is all in I wouldn't even say go to REI - I only use them for the fixed price items like cloths and food and fuel. The sponsor of this video is THE place. you could go further with more choices within the brands you see there but that at the moment is ground zero.
Decide what backpacking you're going to be doing.
#Over a few hills 5 or so miles from the car and a city - buy what you want
#high altitude mountains like the Sierra and such - lightest possible gear, only whats needed, think hiking verses camping.
pile your gear up and reduce it by a third. embrace your funk. To be safe you need to be VERY prepared any day regardless of forecast. so stuff has to cover all the unknowns and still be completely dependable and light. That all at GGG.
I subscribe (now) to buy once cry once. Its not cheap but I argue its the cheapest best hobby all considered. Maybe if you were a chess dork....even then you might have a 2 thousand dollar set.
For 2300.00 you can have arguably the best of the best gear for backpacking that will last for years and you can trust. I'd put my 10 degree EE quilt (at least 9 years old) next to a brand new one and I'm not sure you could tell the difference. About 4 or 5 years in with the dynema tent and a tarp...thrilled with both. The tarp is new. very cool experience.
But any way you get outside do it. I've seen to old Mexicans coming off Mt Whitney smiling and all they had was a big tote and some Mexican blankets. Just do it (let me know if I owe Nike something for that reference. )

Pillow Strap weighs more than my pillow and costs $37 friggin' dollars. It's the most ridiculous thing I've seen yet. Just put a buff over your pillow and use some shock cord or quilt strap to do literally the same thing for free with no added weight.
