  • How to fix a broken car door handle. If your car door handle breaks off it will take a mechanic 1 & 1/2 to 2 hours of labor to replace your broken car handle with a new car handle. Most car door handles are made of very strong plastic that lasts for years, but sometimes they break off. If you are lucky you may be able to repair the handle inexpensively with JB Weld and a small piece of metal reinforcement.
When my car handle broke on my 1994 Toyota Corolla I was going to replace it myself with a new one. I saw several good videos on UA-cam on how to replace a broken car door handle, but it required me to purchase a small tool to remove the panel from the interior side of the door. Also, there was a possibility I would not be able to get the lock to work properly after attempting to replace my handle.
I called my mechanic and made an appointment to replace my broken car door handle, but then later decided to give JB Weld a try to re-attach my car door handle.
I removed the exterior paint roughed up the surface of the plastic with some sandpaper and then wiped it down with alcohol. Then it was simply a matter of adding JB Weld to the broken parts of the handle and attaching a small piece of metal reinforcement.
Once the mental part had been secured with the epoxy I added more JB Weld to the part and then attached it to the car door.
JB Weld makes several different epoxies and I used one that was made specifically for plastics, but would also work on securing plastic to metal.
    J-B Weld 50133 Plastic Bonder amzn.to/3qVkEI3
This epoxy has a 15-minute set time so it required me to hold the plastic parts together for 15 minutes securely and firmly. That was the most difficult part. Afterward, I let the repair alone for 24 hours before testing to see if it worked. I should mention that I also inserted some thin card stock between the handle and the door to keep any of the epoxy attaching from the handle to the door.
I also attached two small pieces of wooden Dowel to the door handle with hot glue which allowed me to hold the broken part of the door handle in a more secure and manageable way.
Afterward, I use some silicone spray to lubricate my lock and door mechanisms to keep it from sticking or jamming in the future.
It's important to wear gloves and eye protection when working with epoxy.
The JB Weld epoxy is actually quite brilliant as it comes in two different containers that are separate and they do not harden after being opened. You should be able to find a lot of uses for this product. If you need to attach metal I would recommend the original JB Weld which is even stronger than this particular epoxy but it has a much longer set time. They also make one JB Weld that has a set time of only six minutes.

JB Weld is good stuff. The guy who invented it lives a couple hours from me. Once, I repaired a leaking radiator with that stuff. It lasted as long as I had that car.

Hey Brad, I don't know why I never used this before. I have use Marine Tex which is a Marine epoxy. When I was a kid in the guy that invented it actually hired me to paint the bottom of his boat. I love how JB Weld uses the two syringes to dispense the epoxy and hardener. I'm going to find a lot more uses for this.

Great video Robb. By the way, thanks for the intel on my wheel bearings. It saved me several hundred bucks! Turned out I only needed a new tire and an alignment.

I glued my rearview mirror back to the windshield with blue silicone gasket maker.
When I junked the car,I tried to pull it off and it broke the glass.

Great job! We were all holding our breath when you tested it a few times! Glad it worked.
The end of a clutch-brake control cable just broke yesterday on my ride-on mower. This is the second time it has broken since I bought the 'tractor' 13 years ago. Ordered a new cable for about $20.00 on Amazon (spit, spit) only for the business to say it is no longer available. Looked for another one in all the selections and came across one bad review after another on these things (all slightly made differently but will fit the same make as mine). The only one with a good review was the one for $60.00.
Had a duh moment and remembered that I know how to solder, have flux and varieties of solder and a soldering iron, and can solder the small hook back on the end of the spring myself. Right now it has a wire hooked through the spring and attached to the metal plate hole it hooks on to because it usually takes weeks for a part to get to me. That's how I fixed it while waiting for parts last time it broke. Will make an improvement and lay and solder a cut piece of wire from an old metal clothes hanger we used to use before the wooden and plastic ones. Both wires will be soldered together for strength. That should really reinforce that part that is under a lot of tension. If solder will support huge stained glass windows, it will hold the wire on the end of a spring.
Glad now I didn't chuck out the first one that broke because sometimes the other end breaks according to reviews. I can pretty much guarantee that I won't need the spare as MY fix will work. Wish they would stop producing parts that are meant to break to make sure they are always making money off us.

Hey Island gal, I think that's great. One of my joys in life is improvising ways to fix stuff. I think your solder idea is a good one. You might want to look into that JB Weld. The original formulation is very strong, but it has a long set time. You can also braze metal which I have never done but is stronger than soldering. It appears to be the same method except soldering is a lower temperature and not as strong. I always get a good feeling when I fix something or create something. If it works.😀 you should start making UA-cam videos.

JB Weld saves the day . Again!
I never tried the 15 minute version.
Used a lot of the slow cure grey stuff.
    It never fails.

Hey chops, I was going to use the original version but it would take too long. It looks like pretty powerful stuff. They also have a six minute version I was going to use but I went with the one that was formulated just for plastic. JB Weld is my new best friend.😀

I need to get some of that 15 minute version. Sounds like the right stuff for that job.
Keep us informed on the success of this project. With that metal reenforcement , I think
you have a good repair. If it fails, I really want to know about it.
I always have the old standard JB weld on hand . I’ve never even heard of this one or any other brand of 15 minute epoxy formulated for plastics. I’m pretty sure the 5 minute epoxy would be too flexible for that job..
The slow cure turns into a stone like material while the five minute version produces a flexible bond.
If the 15 minute stuff partially melts into the plastic ,that would be like one piece again. JB welded.
Along with duct tape , is the handy man’s best friend.

Yeah, the plan changed as I went along. Initially I was going to glue the handle together and then install the metal brace after it had been glued together. I also changed my mind about different types of JB Weld right up to the end. People don't know how many of my videos I have made that did not work and never showed up on UA-cam. I get a big kick out of my video creations and inventions. When they actually work.
