Hi Olive, I’m one of those people you convinced to read Rules, and I’m so glad of it. I’m not a particularly fast reader, but that’s all I did for two days. I’m now reading A Gentleman in Moscow. I’m enjoying it, but, to me, not as good a read. I’m on the wait list at the library for Table for Two. I love short stories and just finished a wonderful collection by Tobias Wolff called The Night in Question, which I highly recommend if you haven’t read. It’s not new, from 1996. I’m a retired librarian who pretty much stopped reading when I left work. A combination of life and health issues, including eye problems. I’m better now and I’m scouring Booktube to find readers who love the same types of books I gravitate toward. You’re definitely that. I’m really enjoying your videos.
A Gentleman in Moscow is my all time favorite book and I loved the short stories in Table for Two. I'm slightly annoyed with the novella at the end and can't, for the life of me, understand why we needed to go back and visit Eve from Rules of Civility. The first half is filled with such delicious short stories with rich, beautifully flawed yet wonderful characters. And then Eve. I struggle to understand the infatuation with this character.

I predict that “Rules of Civility” will become “The Great Gatsby” of its time.
I 100% agree. Gatsby is my favorite book of all time and I have thought since first reading Amor Towles that he reminds me so much of Fitzgerald. Both brilliant writers❤️

It is always such a treat to hear you talk about things you're passionate about. I loved the way you not only reviewed the actual stories, but had such a well thought out take on the entite existence of the book. Really enjoyed the video!
As a very old newbie novelist, i find it very encouraging that someone as indisputably great as Amor Towles can sometimes be less than great.
I had to wait to watch this video until I finished both my reread of Rules of Civility and then Table for Two. I love Amor Towles and haven’t been disappointed in any of his books. I need to do a reread of AGIM, as that was the first book of his that I read, so it’s been awhile. Then I picked up Rules and The Lincoln Highway when it was first released. Of all his books, that book broke my heart the most. I loved the wink and a nod in the first short story to Rules. And I was so taken with Eve’s story. I didn’t like her character at all in Rules, even less with the reread. So I’m happy she redeemed herself, in my eyes anyway, in Hollywood. After AGIM came out, I had gone on a quest to find more books by him, which is how I came in contact with Rules. But I remember there being an earlier book of short stories that I always meant to track down but just never did. I’ve got to see if I can find that again, I think there were four in the collection. But that’s my project until his next book😊. Needless to say, he’s an auto buy, auto preorder author for me. Did I mention I love him?❤️❤️
I recently finished ROC and it was a fantastic read and i believe you when you say there are bits hidden. The theme and vocabulary is delicious. I recommend The Lincoln Highway which was a cracking read. I would love to take that trip. The characters and their history was very interesting
I read Rules for Civility last month based on your recommendation. I really enjoyed it. Not to the level you love it but glad I read it.
I actually was more of a fan of Gentlemen in Moscow, but based on your feelings of ROC, perhaps a reread (or two or three…) is due.
I wasn’t thrilled with either Gentleman in Moscow or The Lincoln Highway and rated both 3/5 on Goodreads. I didn’t understand all the raving over Amor Towles , but then I listened to him on a podcast and was very impressed with the man himself so I decided to give Rules of Civility a read. I am so in love with that book! I first listened on audible (something I rarely do) and thought the reader exceptionally good- she is Katie Kontent to me. I loved it so much that I immediately bought the book to read. Looking forward to his newest, though I’d rather read more about Katie than Eve.
I love Gentleman in Moscow, and I want to read The Lincoln Highway. Maybe I need to reread Rules of Civility, but I don't know if I'll find it out my used bookshop again.

@@abookolive I read Rules once before, but a reread is definitely in order. I was surprised to see Ewan McGregor in the role because the last I had heard, Kenneth Branagh was going to star. I watched the first episode of Fallout and really liked it. I'm a fan of anything with Walton Goggins!

A Gentleman in Moscow, the series, is wonderful and heartwarming. I will probably watch it again. The characters are exquisite. I can’t stop thinking about it.

I finished Rules of Civility on Sunday, which I bought around two years ago because of you! I devoured it in two days, having read it into the night with my book light until my eyes closed.
I wanted to love 100% of this book especially since Rules of Civility is one of my favorite books too. Unfortunately, I loved short stories #2, #3 & #5 but considered the rest of the book disappointing. Maybe I had my expectations set too high? Still love Rules, but not the sequel.
My favorite is Gentlemen in Moscow.
For me The Lincoln highway jumped the shark for me, im kinda hesitant to read A Gentleman in Moscow, what’s your take on it?
Lincoln Highway I thought was just okay. Gentleman...I did not like. Lack of plot, completely unrealistic story (I've studied Russian history pretty extensively).
Oh, thank you for mentioning that you should read Rules of Civility first. I've had that one my shelf for ages and decided to read it in June (thanks to you!), so I'll keep at least that one story until after I finish Rules!
I agree with you about the short stories. Two of them made me tear up. As for Eve, i liked it until the end which didn't seem realistic to me.
Rules of Civility was the third book by Towles that I read, after Gentleman in Moscow and Lincoln Highway. (And I just finished Table for Two.) I agree on the Rules of Civility love. It was the best book I read in 2023, absolutely fantastic.
I am one of the people you convinced to read ROC. I am also one of the people you have finally convinced to reread ROC. After which I may or may not read the new (ish) novella. Sorry it wasn't what you had hoped for.

Hi. I’m reading Table for Two audibly and can’t for the life of me find the list of stories. I’m about 55% done. My favorite so far is The Line and the one about Arthur Fein (Fine). I’m disappointed in the one about Eve. Do you know where I can find the list of stories? I’m not finding it on line. I’m going to listen to your review after I finish. It is a 5 star for me so far.
