A finales el siglo XIX la familia Calvet encargó a Antoni Gaudí el edificio más barroco de toda la obra de Gaudí, y el primero que realizó en el Eixample de Barcelona; mucho antes de la construcción de la Casa Batlló y la Casa Milà.
