I used to go past this engine outside the pub almost every day on the way to school. Was disappointed to see it go, but glad that it was going to be running again.
I remember as a child riding behind 32646 on the Hayling line and then seeing it as the pub sign. The Terriers could go where other engines couldn't reach because of their light weigh and good power. Alas, the wooden Hayling bridge eventually deteriorated to the level where it was too decrepit for even a Terrier to cross safely. The line actually was not loss-making but the profit was too tiny to pay even the interest charges for a bridge replacement, let alone the full capital cost. So it closed.
It’s indicative of how nice a livery improved engine green is, as most of the surviving Terriers have worn it at some point in preservation. I’m more partial to Marsh Umber, but the Stroudley livery is still great. Will it be Boxhill and Martello next? The former is the Brighton works museum piece, and the latter was preserved by Butlins holiday camp.
Who knew there was a terrier engine that worked as a billboard for a pub. It's cool to know history for certain engine classes at other railways. Some are interesting, some are bizarre, and some are sad. And this one is definitely bizarre. Great job doing a video on this. Keep up the great work and take care.
I think it was "Stepney" which I had the privilege of driving back in 2000 spending a day on the "Bluebell" learning how to drive a steam loco. The experience was great, almost close to a kind of "heaven". Come to that, on my trips to school in Brighton starting 1961, I think at least one of these engines was being used as a shunter. Machines of this class remain close to the materials from which they are made hence restorable almost indefinitely unlike our present-day cars, their computers and plastic mouldings.
i have heard about story off freshwater before but nice to know some new piece off its history also i got story you may like about little diesel that ended up in jail complex for number year before been preserved by yorkshire wolds railway
Quite possible. The LSWR T9s also looked much nicer before Urie rebuilt them with longer fatter smokeboxes to contain the superheater ... but they performed (even) better when rebuilt.
I too have been fascinated with the Terriers. I made an OC named Dexter (formerly known as Hailsham) and got a Trainz model and wrote a 4 part story about him.
An engine called Freshwater sitting at a pub. Probably the only fresh water on the premises.
That’s actually fucking funny
Lol I cracked up at this
customer "please can i have a glass of newington"
bar tender "yes you can!" *pours glass of steaming hot water from the boiler*

No other engine has ever had such a fitting name.

Great video as always Max, nice to see a bit of history about my favourite A1/A1X. Cheers

They should have put Poplar at the pub so that people would know they were visiting a “Popular” pub 😭🤣

Stepney The Pub Engine
Been a minute since I've watched 'The World's End' with Simon Pegg.

fresh means fresh and water is water and then a terrier steals fresh water.
a lovely video Max ^^
i drive past that pub every other weekend when i take my dogs for a walk!
I just hope Freshwater didn't encounter any drunk drivers
I have a feeling Freshwater has the same massive ego that Thomas has with a bit of cheeky brilliance too
Great video, Max!
Unpopular opinion: the A1s looked more elegant and beautiful than the A1x

One person may or may not have set a rail-bus on fire for a rival company
They turned it into a sign.
Funniest s*it I’ve ever seen.
i love the terriers i realy wanto visit the bluebell railway. but i live in the netherlands
Boxhill beer anyone?
I’ve been waiting ages for Max to do a video on Boxhill. It’s my favourite Terrier.
When is That Duncan and Ivo Episode Coming Out?
Can you talk about the one named after Brenner next?
“How’s that for a slice of fried gold”

Vcv
The engine betrayed their siblings
I think Freshwater is a garbage name. I prefer Newington.
