  • On this Garden Tour, Garden Home host P. Allen Smith visits a local pumpkin farm where the harvest season is underway! Allen discusses the many varieties of pumpkins and teaches us how to know when it's time to harvest.
    Topics Include:
    How to Grow Pumpkins
    Caring for Pumpkins
    Pumpkin Varieties
    When to Harvest Pumpkins
"I confess that I am obsessed with pumpkins. Whether it is a bowl of mini-pumpkins on a table, a stack of cushaws, luminas and blue hubbards by the front door, or a traditional Jack-o-lantern, there is no easier way to decorate for the season.
Growing pumpkins takes a lot of space, but if you’ve got it I recommend giving them a try." ~ P. Allen Smith
Special thanks to Shannon Holman and Arkansas Crop Technologies, Inc for having us out to their farm!

It was amazing to see that huge field of pumpkins and all the wonderful varieties there are !! Its hard to decide which I like the best. I hope you continue to have more autumnal videos this season. P. Allen Smith, Thank you so much for bringing us Pumpkins ! My absolute favorite time of year, FALL. I am a traditionalist when it comes to Pumpkins. My sister,s Birthday is on Halloween. The best memories are when my Mom, Sister and myself would go to Lopez's Ranch , no longer there:( in Culver City, CA and pick out our Pumpkins ( Orange Standard) for carving and come back to the already Halloween decorated dining room for my sister,s party. Aunts, cousins, uncles and friends would come over to celebrate and then we would all watch It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown after I took my sister Trick or Treating, then the entire family would have a piece of the large sheet cake Halloween decorated Birthday cake for my sister. Had more fun ! This is why Orange Pumpkins are my go to till this day. Great, great memories for me.

I kept seeds from my white pumpkins from last year and they took off, but the squash bugs made it impossible to save the vines. I think I planted them too early, like you said, Allen. They are so beautiful...I particularly love the pale shades, the tans, the creams, the pale greens and the butter yellows! Punkin’ tossin’ in the field-how fun is that!?!☺️☺️

I love the fall season with all those pumpkins. I hope you make another video going back to the pumpkin patch and show us more varieties. I also hope you show us some inexpensive fall decorating ideas.

Hello Allen! You are so excited about growing things! I love growing pumpkins too however, I am still a beginner at growing them. How do we handle powery mildew? Yes! Pumpkins represent fall. In my garden the butternut squash run wild in the flower bed. I love how it looks just very abundant in my urban cottage garden. Thanks for sharing your joy!!!

I finally got to go to the Half Moon Bay, California Pumpkin Weigh- in last fall. It was a hoot! I was surprised that it isn't the typical orange pumpkins that were the "big boys." But they are doing amazing things with all the varieties of. My fav was a huge Cinderalla. (not close to the Huge One's weight though.)

Very enjoyable, relaxing and refreshing! I might try the warty pumpkins now, plus the cushaw squash, those were the standard canned pumpkin squash grown commercially? Originally from Mexico, an interesting looking pumpkin! 🥧🍂 Currently I have Tetsukabuto squash, rouge vif d'etampes, red kuri, kabocha, butternut, and New England pie pumpkins growing and sprawling in the garden.🌞🌱

Did you have any vine borer problems this year. They almost demolished my crop, especially the blue Hubbard's.

What’s their secret to not have powdery mildew in a field of dense leaves and pumpkins? I live in the southern part of Arkansas and it’s a constant battle with the heat and humidity. Thanks

Aren't Butternuts C. Moschata though? Most varieties classified as Pumpkins are within the genus of C. Pepo.
