Following, and am still evaluating a 2ZZ for my swap. Already pulled and replaced the 1ZZ. This car is easier to drop the engine on than my MR2 AW11. Suggestions: drain all fluids first (engine, tranny); 2) use an old carpet or cardboard rather than a dolly to drop the engine onto. This greatly reduces the height you have to lift the car and is easier /safer, since the engine cannot fall or roll off the dolly. You can drag it out easily by yourself across a clean garage floor. I have used furniture dollies, but even they take too much room. Throw away the cardboard when done (also absorbent). Last, better check your jack stand placement prior to lowering the car back down...you are lucky you did not punch through the floor or a door. Once the car is up, I move them out of the way entirely until you are ready to support the car again. And chock those front wheels!
And by dragging, I mean dragging the engine across the floor USING the cardboard or carpet, which will protect the engine and your garage floor. Plywood and multiple pieces of conduit works as well, with the conduit pieces providing a rolling surface.
These videos are the best archive of MR2 Spyder engine swapping on the Internet. I'm dropping my blown 1zz this week (all prep work is done, just need to pop the axles and unmount) and your videos have helped the entire way. Thank you.
Thank you for your response.still don’t believe they removed the motor to replace rear main seal most mechanics job done by lowering transmission not removing motor.
Looking GOOD! Also interested, as is Tautvydas Z,.... Did you buy new 2zz and or trans? See some very new looking parts (trans in particular) in video. I purchased "drop-out" from US spec 2001 Celica GTS with 2zz/C60 and wiring + comp. Has over 100k so will refresh motor as needed when I strip it down....est 2+wks from now. What is yours trans choice? With LSD? Please advise and keep posting as much detail as possible. Thank you and happy motoring, P
I went used JDM for the transmission and engine. Could not find an LSD transmission, they come from Europe where it was standard. Installing an LSD is expensive and many saw you have to have it done for you. Some people say it is not a big difference for the car but I don't know.
Hello Mr. Stark and thank you for the response. The JDM motor/trans looks so clean from what I noticed in the video. Trans is C60? I am looking for LSD, but may be biased as when I test drove my car in Northern Michigan it was snowing....and it was a one-wheel-wonder (no traction other than one wheel). Anyway, looking forward to more videos and thank you for posting. P
Mix DaGod - The passenger side will be the easiest. The driver side you need a special tool or you can use cable tied onto the axle and around a big sledge hammer like I did. Cheaper to buy some cable.
It is a tight fit. There are just 3 bolts, I think 12mm. You need a ratcheting wrench instead of a socket. You can get to the top bolt from above the engine and the bottom 2 from under.

Good luck on the swap. Thanks for watching and glad they have helped.
How did you tackle draining the fuel and disconnecting the fuel lines?

where did you get those tags from? I've always used masking tape but sometimes the writing gets rubbed off.
I got them from the office supply store. They worked alright but some of the tags did get pulled off since they were paper only.
@@StarkReality awesome, thanks
Can a 1zz out of Corolla or matrix work in MR2. Locked up in mine. Don’t want to swap to 2zz.
John Doe I can’t imagine it would be a problem. You would need to swap a lot of the peripherals but the engine is the same.
How do you take out axels? Im struggling to take even the left one since i dont know, this my first time

Hi, did you buy a new 2ZZ engines or a used one?
I bought a JDM engine and transmission. So it is used and straight from Japan. Came from a Celica GTS in the 2000-2002 range.
How long did it take you to do all that?
I did not track hours spent and I am certainly no speed demon on my projects. It took me about 6 months all together.
Woo hoo!
Do you remove pcv hose when removing motor
It goes between the valve cover and the intake so it can stay attached while you remove it all.
Tried that axle trick ..didn't work lol ..gonna drop it with the axle in place lol..keeping 5spd

Do i have to remove transmission fluid ?
If you remove the axles then the fluid will come out. If you remove the engine without removing the axles you could leave the fluid in.
How did you remove ur ac compressor? Theres like no room for me 2 get a wrench in
