The film is an actual masterpiece.
If this film were released today for the first time, without any history or sequels or memes, it would still hold up. Having watched it in a theater back in the summer of ‘75, I still remember everything vividly, including the audience reactions…popcorn flying, people jumping out of their seats, people literally walking out of the the theater. It wasn’t just “good”. It was a masterclass on filmmaking from story to dialog to editing to casting. And of course, the music and score. A perfect film.

I love how she said beginning is unrealistic and there was a fatal great white attack in Sydney recorded in February and the great white grabbed a swimmer and was dragging him through the water for a good 30 seconds. Bit him in half just below the butt and then went back up grabbed the rest and took it underwater. You could hear him screaming. Very very eerily similar to this except you saw the shark a little bit. Realistically you would see the shark here but it's better that you didn't. Also there have been numerous times that remains of shark attack victims have been found days later and while they are generally nibbled on by other critters it's very common to find remains

Fun fact: the line “you’re gonna need a bigger boat” was never in the script. It was a line improvised by the actor in the moment.
Fun fact #2: The several mechanical sharks used for filming had SO MANY mechanical problems that they could only film short scenes at a time; which is why they only showed it at the end. Spielberg even named the shark “Bruce” after his lawyer, who he said was always a pain in the ass.

According to the actor/writer who played Meadows in the film Carl gottlieb Roy scheider told him that it was 100% in the script and while Roy scheider did ad-lib some lines Roy himself said that this was not one of the lines and Carl has been saying that it was unscripted for decades but was corrected by scheider. Up until this movie sharks in movies and t.v. shows were these dolphin sized fish so it came as a shock to a lot of people that while at 25' in length the shark was bigger than the record but not by much. And fisherman and surfers claimed to see them this big.

I'm sure the most well known tidbit about this movie has been mentioned a lot of times already, that the shark is barely seen because they had problems with the model, and so one of the effective parts of the movie was an accident.
What I find much more interesting is that Quinn's actor was a legendary drunk and he was drunk most of the time on set. The scene with the chalk board scratching is him drunk. But legend has it that he was almost sober (more sober than anytime else in the procuction) in the talk on the boat, with the biggest feeding frenzy ever. That feeding frenzy really happened, btw, and as far as I know it's still the largest known.

The one on the left is really annoying to watch a movie with. Have you ever heard of suspending disbelief for the sake of experiencing actual enjoyment? Do you have to comment on every single innocuous and mundane detail when they have no bearing on the story whatsoever? Not every insignificant thought you have needs to be verbalized. Relax and watch the movie for crying out loud... And what is you're peculiar aversion to someone whistling? You're reactions to the nails on the chalkboard and the whistling were basically the same. WTF? The vibe I got from you the whole time was that you think you're above the movie. Making fun of every little thing and being sarcastic and condescending the whole time. Super freaking annoying... This movie is a classic by Steven Spielberg. Have a little reverence and respect. And as for the one on the right... she's hot. Great reaction thanks for this. I do have a bone to pick Mom with the glasses, that attack is actually quite realistic. It may look weird but that is how sharks attack, they thrash you, lift you out of the water and sometimes they bite and come back so it's realistic. right? It was really weird. And she had a number of comments like that. "Wouldn't the shark eat it and then scavengers get the rest of it?", when they came across the remains of the first victim. Answer: yes, there is almost nothing left and it is being consumed by crabs. "Why are you picking the small paint brushes?!?" "if you weren't whistling you might be able to hear..." "C'mon, a WHOLE fish that has been sitting in the digestive tract for 24 hours?", like the shark couldn't have swallowed it whole right before it got caught and killed. While they were on the boat when Quint first gets the shark on the fishing rod, she said "I feel like we're all making big mistakes right now. We're all being really stupid", as if she has a better grasp on how to catch the shark. For as much picking apart of it as she did, I was surprised that she ended up liking it. @@SubterrelProspector

Sharks are the apex predator of the ocean. Sharks, especially great whites fear only three things…adult whales, Killer Sharks, and Dolphin pods. Humans are not animals that sharks fear. And they are opportunistic predators. They take the path of least resistance and actively seek the injured or weak. They also love the taste of seals. But if they’re really hungry, I wouldn’t bet my life on them being as afraid of me as I am of them.

Steven Spielberg wanted a better ending. The shark's head was filled with red paint, squid, and dynamite. They only had one chance to get the explosion right and it went off perfectly.

Sharks are not sporadic feeders, they may eat once a month sometimes less and can actually go up to a year without feeding so they digest food slowly even though their stomach acid is quite potent

21:41 -- Actually, HE did.. That is author Peter Benchley as the reporter... --- The little boy that was killed was played by Jefferey Voorhees who still lives on Martha's Vineyard and owns a pub called "The Wharf" which is literally up the street from the dock.. So the fishermen were correct that you just walk straight ahead...

🎯👁 *I watched Jaws with Stephen Spielberg, the Spring of 1975, as a teenager!* I did not find this out until decades latter while watching the documentary commemorating the 35 year anniversary of Jaws debut ("Jaws: the Inside Story" 2010). It was in a theater in Lakewood Center Mall, Lakewood, CA. (Wikipedia mistakenly says it was in Long Beach, CA) Spielberg may have known of the theater in Lakewood, having been a student at Long Beach State University, for a short time. Lakewood and Long Beach CA are cities adjacent to each other. The theater still operates today (Update: Pacific Theaters 16 closed forever due to medical restrictions. The AMC 12 Theater on the same Mall property remains open. The old Pacific Theater is where Spielberg watched Jaws incognito.)
I feel sorry for this generation because Jaws in that theater (about 3,000 seat capacity) I had the best corporate movie experience of my entire life. Why? Because 3K+ people in that theater experienced everything on screen as a single person: we screamed, flinched, laughed, winced, cheered, together. We were on the same emotional roller coaster for the entire movie. No other movie experience before or after comes close to what we enjoyed, as one, that Spring in '75. I'll never forget it.
Then to find out, decades later, that Stephen Spielberg himself, sat in the same audience, blew my mind. He was not famous at that time. The only movie I knew that he did prior to Jaws was a TV movie called "Dual" starring Dennis Weaver. (There are striking similarities between Jaws and Dual. The predator in Dual is a 40 ft. diesel truck rather than a shark.) Spielberg wanted to get an audience reaction to the film, in case he needed to make last minute changes before it went national.

    1. Goof: Chrissie's body parts are too far up the beach to have been washed up there without a storm.
    2. Boy Scouts don't need to do the mile swim to get their Merit badge. It's an accomplishment all it's own.
    3. Lee Fierro/Mrs. Kentner actually slapped Roy Scheider. It took 17 takes. Once was so hard it knocked his glasses off.
    4. The jump scare at Ben Gardner's boat was put in on purpose by Spielberg because they were having problems with the
shark "Bruce" and his appearance was delayed and the movie needed something earlier. It works every time😱
    5. IRL Dreyfuss and Shaw didn't get along so Spielberg used the animosity to fuel their feud onscreen.
    6. Hooper was right. The fish that hit the line was a game fish.
    7. "You're gonna need a bigger boat" is one of the greatest adlibs in history. It was the first time Roy actually saw Bruce.
    8. Goof: An animal that large couldn't hit the side of the boat as rapidly as it did UNDER WATER.
    9. I suspect Quint's story about the Indy gave him PTSD flashbacks and contributed to his behavior after he told the story.
    10. I was in the Navy and we were instructed to go for the eyes when confronting any creature attaching you.
    11. In the book not only does Hooper die but he was also having an affair with Mrs. Brody.
    12. JAWS II is the only other one worth watching. It revolves around the Brody kids and their friends. Including one of the mayor's kids.

The scene where Quint is talking about the USS Indianapolis is a 100 percent true story. Also Robert Shaw was a heavy drinker and his speech he was completely drunk. You look closely you see his eyes are glazed. Spielberg kicked him off the set and said don't come back unless you are sober. The scene was reshot. You can see his eyes look normal. The shooting star they captured was purely by luck not planned. Also the famous line your gonna need a bigger boat was completely improvised

    Elizabeth,
You call it brilliance that we don't see the shark until the end but everyone on the crew calls it "THE DAMN SHARK ISN'T WORKING AGAIN!!!!"
Spielberg had no choice but to end the movie this way because 90% of the film the damn shark prop, Bruce, NEVER worked right.

The gathering of fishing boats did look like the Trump rally they had in Florida. Haha, I would say for one thing, the nitwits on the boats in this film had the mental capacity of Biden supporters.
