  • Cementerio de Granada in Granada, Nicaragua - the oldest cemetery in Nicaragua in the city of Granada in Nicaragua, Central America. Located on the outskirts of colonial Granada in Nicaragua, Cementerio de Granada is an extravagant cemetery sprawling with grand mausoleums, marble tombs and detailed religious sculptures in the city of Granada, Nicaragua. Rumored to be Central America’s oldest known cemetery, the Granada cemetery was used mostly between 1876 and 1922 during the city’s wealthiest years. Granada cemetery’s wealthiest spared no expense to show off their status even in death.
The Granada cemetery is also the final resting place of six Nicaraguan presidents including the first official president Fruto Chamorro. A large finely sculpted and well landscaped memorial to these former presidents is one of the first you pass by after entering. Adding to the lavishness is an 1880 neoclassical stone building Chapel of Spirits (Capilla de Animas), a scaled version of the French chapel of the same name. Further inside is a scaled version of the Notre Dame cathedral.

Sorry, my first comment got erased by mistake... Granada in Spain is much bigger than Granada in Nicaragua but they are both beautiful in their own unique way!!

ANOTHER beautiful cemetery you've shown us, Vic ... Thank you!! I'm fascinated by funerary practices in different countries, and how tombs and mausoleums vary from region to region. Beautifully filmed, as always : )

I love these old cemeteries. Such wonderful architecture. My U.S. city has banned new cemeteries, so you have to be buried out in the county. Why? Not for environmental reasons but because dead people bring no taxes.

A historical observation is that Granada is not the oldest Spanish city in America, neither in Central America nor in continental America. Cities like Santo Domingo, Veracruz, Panama and Quetzaltenango are previous. Even in Nicaragua it is not the oldest since León was founded before. Nor does it appear among the still inhabited pre-Columbian cities such as Cholula, Cusco and Flores, Petén.
