I have one request, Mosfilm, please upload other movies of Anatoly Solonitsyn such as The love of mankind and Bodyguard too, and please provide English subtitles. I, and many other cinema lovers around the globe along with me, will be eternally thankful to you till our last breath.

      At Home Among Strangers (1974),
Andrei Rublev (1966, although it's in black and white but is considered one the greatest movies of all time).
Plus, if you liked white nights then you can watch Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya which was based on it.

I remember seeing this on Swedish TV back in the day. not the long after having seen Stalker at a movie theatre - didn't notice that they both had the same leading actor though. Dostoevsky and Tarkovsky are both of them favourites with me.

Eizenstein's both Prince "Aleksander Nevsky" (1936) and Czar "Ivan the Terrible" (1945), but also Grigory Kozintsev's "Don Quixote" (1957) were all played over the decades by the one and only same iconic actor, Nikolay Cherkasov!

This is an exceptional film about an exceptional writer. I was fortunate enough to read Crime and Punishment, The Brothers Karamazov and The Underground Man by Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky when I was already over 30 and had a good humanistic background. His work impressed me greatly because in it human emotions are genuine despite being paradoxically fictitious. His characters are able to feel the world with the intensity that we ourselves should feel, but cannot because that would be extremely painful and dangerous. Man, especially modern man, desperately needs to distance himself from his emotions because they are black holes that suck ordinary people (and we are all ordinary) into an undesirable world in which suffering inevitably becomes an abysmal, phantasmagorical reality from whose clutches we can no longer escape. Dostoevsky intuited this with great insight and created characters who live intensely what the reader should not experience except in an imaginary way. Tragically, he himself seems to have been condemned to live like his characters. This is what the film tries to show, despite ending in an ironically optimistic way.

Rather good translation. I'm glad you enjoyed it. There are many documentaries and serials made by more contemporary Russian authors but unfortunately Russians don't bother translating them into other languages anymore. As one Russian producer told me, we, Russians, don't bother any more about Westerners, we do it for ourselves. I think the West failed to sanction Russia but sanctioned itself.

This documentary about Dostoyevsky belittles this great Russian writer of Czarist Russia -- Victor Nimrud, an American Assyrian.

Talented composers wrote music for Soviet films. Here is the composer of Georgian origin Irakli Gabeli. This music was written specifically for the film.

The very first scene in the graveyard is poorly written. It is a good exemple of a heavy-handed info dump scene: a bland dialogue between nonexistent characters, whose only function is to set up the backstory without bothering to dramatize it nor to engage the viewers.

@@williamsawyer9894 If you say so. But, imho, well-executed tracking and crane shots can't counterbalance the almost amateurish writing. A good camerawork is not enough to make a good picture.
