"The Story Behind the Song" (published on June 30, 2020 by Heather Schopf):
Do you remember the day you received "the news"? For some, it's a missing heartbeat during an ultrasound, or a car accident, or a cancer diagnosis, or fill-in-the-blank. I remember the day when I got the call informing me of my mom's cancer. (Graciously, God has allowed many cancer-free years beyond that diagnosis!) For a close friend of mine, she waded through the same cancer-potential with her mother who was awaiting surgery to find out what exactly wasn't right. Meanwhile, my friend texted me some verses:
Psalm 57:1-2:
Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me!
For my soul trusts in You; and in the shadow of Your wings
I will make my refuge, until these calamities have passed by.
Psalm 112:7:
[The righteous] will not be afraid of evil tidings;
his heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord.
Spending time meditating on these verses is what began the creative process for this new song. Such simple truths, such profound and steadying words. Originally, I intended for this song to be sung by a children's choir (I lead a small choir like this at my church). While we do offer a 2-part Youth Version, the song eventually developed into one we could use on tour.
So long as I'm still trekking on this Christian journey, I don't think I could ever tire of singing these lyrics. We always need to keep fixing our hearts on God, staying our minds on His truth, and casting our anchor firmly in the hope of the final rest before us!

This song means so much to me! This year has been rough, going from one health crisis to another narrowly dodging death on several occasions. As a 28 yr old have had to decide on end of life care this song, and songs like it help me to hold on to hope and shelter under His wings. Thanks so much!

I find it interesting that David wrote Psalm 57 while hiding in a cave to protect him from Saul (57:1 was part of the inspiration for this song). David physically hid in a cave, but his true shelter was under God's wings. Bless you, as you continue to trust!

@@ForeverBeSure Oooh, fun! E major is a bittersweet key--slightly difficult, but very beautiful. Funny, but a lot of new songs are written in E, especially the Gettys. Must be Kristyn's key :D
