      Yes, for me that is the only thing missing in this amazing game. RRO Extended is a very good tool for that but it would be super handy to have it on the in game map. I understand the map should be giving as less info as possible because there weren't any gadgets like GPS or anything in that time but you'd at least record or register where your track would be.

    There's a historic railroad near me and when I was a kid I was a huge steam train nerd. Still am lmao. But I was just naming off parts of this train to my dad and the engineer and fireman invited me and my dad to ride with them to the rail shed. And see stuff they were restoring. It was only a 20m ride but they let me drive it. Operating a reverser and regular takes a LOT of muscle. Granted I was 10 but I remember how hard I had to yank it. That will forever be a favorite memory. The old guys still work there they just help do maintenance and it's nice to see them occasionally

    At one point there were lanterns on the switches on tracks that would rotate to indicate which way the switch was thrown at night time for engineers to see in the distance they were oil lamps that were lite and put out every day. Nice clean well laid set of tracks on your map looks nice man!

    Yeah the "brakeman" on trains back in the day before a company called Westinghouse invented the "airbrakes" and hoses that go in-between cars. They actually did go in-between each car and set the handbrake! There were 3 people on a train: the engineer who drives, the brakeman who (obviously) brakes and the fireman who fed the fire by shoveling coal
    Rail lines are built up high simply to prevent them from getting flooded out, usually near farm fields or rivers/streams. It doesn't take much to wash away the ballest (stone bed) the rail ties sit in.

    Speaking of getting "stranded" without firewood - the $250 handcart actually has enough power to push 4 empty log cars up a 1% grade. You can't attach it to the cars, but it will push them! Used it to make a log run just to see if it was possible. It worked, but was slow (walking pace) up the hill.

    Train watching is really only a North American thing. Back in the 80s my dad, in USA navy uniform, was over in Hungry and got in major trouble for taking pictures of trains. The cop luckily knew a little English and was able to communicate with my dad. The reason he got in trouble was "Only 2 people take pictures of trains, train workers and terrorists". In most European countries their trains are military level important. In USA and Canada we use highways to transport stuff but over seas they use rails to transport their supplies and soldiers.

    With where the game is now, I'd be happy to see a city building side added, where as you bring in products to the freight depot, a town starts to build out in the area, driving more demand for certain products to be hauled in, like the planks and beams could be brought in for the townsfolk to build houses, or a church, or saloon, would give more of a purpose, and a bit of direction to what you haul, and when.....could also be a good way to profit from the excess firewood, as they'd go to the stack to buy some to heat their house with.

    It may have been mentioned but modern trains, since the late 1800's, have air brakes on all cars. Each car (plus locomotives) is connected not just through the mechanical coupler, but also air hoses that connect to form a "train line" forming a continuous "pipe" for air pressure from the locomotive. For modern brakes, the brakes apply when pressure is reduced in the pipe. This is done through a brake valve in the locomotive and acts in addition to the locomotive "independent" brake. So in modern air brakes, if there is a break in the "train line" - like if a connection between cars comes undone, as would happen if a coupling breaks, then the brakes would automatically apply in both the separated section and the section still connected to the locomotive. This is a key safety feature. The train cars still have a brake wheel for manual application of the brakes (especially when not connected to a source of air).
    Brake vans (more a European term) or cabooses (more of a North American term - other terms used are cabins, hacks, etc), could be used to apply brakes at the end of the train, either through an air brake valve, or through applying the manual brake. Applying the manual brake at the back could be used to stretch the train to keep the slack out between cars. This could be important to keep the slack from running in and out on trackage with lots of ups and downs for instance, where the slack/buffer forces between cars could break the coupling between cars or worse.

    I notice today that the firewood station now comes with firewood when you place it. I was testing if you could place it right next to the cordwood platform . I found out you can load cordwood directly into the firewood platform for those that caught sort after the update.
    Brakemen was one of the most dangerous jobs in early railroading.

    • @Matty12787
      @Matty12787 2 роки тому

      You can somewhat cheat using this method.. Haven't tried deleting the fill point to see if the cordwood disappears to allow a new one to be built\filled again though so don't quote me on it...

  • @Cilla0415
    @Cilla0415 3 роки тому

    The breakman on trains was the most dangerous job the early railroads. Many breakmen were young men, some as young as 15. Would run up and down the train turning the brake handles on every car before the invention of airbrakes. Many brakemen would die on the job. Either by falling off the train, or falling between cars.

    To "pulse the regulator", as kAN called it, you can tap W and S. W makes the reg go up by 2% with every press and S makes it go down. Hold them for 3 seconds to go fully up or down. Hope this was useful.

    The caboose helps to slow down the train when the train is downhill.
    Logically , if you slow down the train from the front, the train has some good chances derail, if you slow down the train from the back end, the train has some good chances to stay on track.
    Can you like tell " Kan " .

    • @StewPedassle
      @StewPedassle 3 роки тому +2

      It’s not “slow down” so much as “hold tension.” It’s similar to why longer trains in the mountains will have engines in the middle and rear - you need to use brake or power, depending on the slope, to manage tensions so you prevent breaking couplers on the uphill and compression derailments on the downhill.
      If they’re trying to “slow down” or decelerate the train, then they’re using as many brakes as they can (it’s possible the back end is favored for heavier application on a slope, but you’re still going to want as much braking surface area as possible to reduce wear and prevent slippage).

    i think a good use for the Eureka is fro when you get the corkwood you can hook it up to the Eureka and take it to the smelter as its a longer distance and smaller engines like the Bettsy is more for like shunting as shunters would get the cars for the bigger engines to not waste as much resources using the bigger engines to grab their own cars.
