    Lots of good information here, Travis! I remember watching my Daddy take care of his tools - He always said to buy the best you can afford, and just like you said, take care of them and they'll take care of you! Lord help me, I can't wait to get moved and get my garden shed organized!

    Travis, thanks for the video. One thing that I learned from my Dad, is to have a plastic bucket full of sand with motor oil in it, next to where you keep all your tools. When done working, all you have to do is move the blade around in the sand and it is cleaned and oiled. Works great!!! Keep the videos coming.

      Isn't the motor oil bad for your plants? I heard of using vegetable oil because it will not contaminate your soil.

    If you make a mixture of 50% raw linseed oil and 50% mineral turpentine, it reduces the viscosity of the oil so that it soaks deeper into the wood The turpentine then evaporates leaving the oil deeply impregnated into the wood

    spot on!
    Best thing I’ve ever done for my wood handles! Definitely get rid of that varnish! The hand feel, look, and then protection gained from the boiled linseed oil, transforms these well used tools into treasures! Lol, love a good tool and it’s so worth the effort to keep them maintained.
    I keep saying I’m going to add some type of oil to a bucket of sand to keep them clean throughout the season, but haven’t tried it yet. How about you all, ever try it?

    I like the fact you take good care of your tools. I feel like it gives me a little more sense of self worth if I take good care of the tools that take good care of me. I’d like to make a suggestion if I may. As you’re sharpening your edged tools, carry your file stroke from one edge point to the next without stopping in the middle. Use the length of the file through the file pass. You’ll have to synch it in the vise up close to the business end of the tool because it’ll shift on you. Doing it this way will give you a more uniform edge on the finished product. Love the videos and keep them coming. I’m looking forward to seeing more videos from Greg this year too. Y’all take care.

    Great video Travis. May have inspired me to work on some tools. BTW, that compost shovel would more properly be called a scoop. The wide fork you call a hay fork is similar to what we used for silage, called, you guessed it, a silage fork. The silage fork would have a shorter D handle and the tines would all be the same length and stronger. Used one a lot on the farm.

    Love this video! 2 Things: 1. Are you planning to do anymore 2 minute tip videos in the future? 2. If i'm planting the Mini Bell Pepper mix, will I have to stake up those plants when they are mature enough or leave them be since the peppers are not weighting the plant down?

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  3 роки тому

      1) Two-Minute Tips were good while they lasted, but the YT algorithm now strongly favors a longer video. So that's what we do so we can reach as many folks as possible.
      2) Always a good idea to support pepper plants at some level. Even if it's just a stake tied to the main stem of the plant.

    OMG a college boy with a file... what could possibly go wrong! :) In all seriousness try and keep that linseed oil off your hands... I'll probably die from cancer, grew up with my hands in solvent most of my life before I knew any better... change now while you can, that stuff isn't good for your internal organs, and the worst of it goes right thru your skin. Man up and don't worry what anyone thinks about it, put on disposable gloves... especially if your kids are watching. One day when you are old like me, you might want to live forever... just saying.

Facebook restricted my account 24hrs for bullying and name calling. I challenged it but it didn't help. I guess their system picked up the hoe part and decided I called somebody a name. LOL
