- I just decided to make a full compilation of all 8 characters he can talk to. This was a fun 30 mins imo. Had fun listening to some old characters.

I wish the creator just kept the original engine and everything and made the sequels in it. Even though they'd look old I'd still happily play them. The new graphics and engines and gameplay are hit and miss.
It's so glad to hear from Tom after all this time. Personally, he's the real MVP for teaching Ryo the Tornado Kick while grooving the entire time.

It was actually supposed to be *Comrades* after *Father's Heaven* to reach Guizhang. But now that they're friends -- guess it doesn't matter much. 👍
i think that was a matter of a translation issue. the japanese word for comrades could probably translate to friends as well
Actually nine dragons does come after "Father's heaven" while comrades/my friend comes after "Mother's Earth" so they actually did get the order right, watch one of the Master Chen calls in the first game again and see for yourself.
I know in the first Shenmue they say "Comrades" but in the Japanese version they actually say "My Friend"
My nostalgia bro. Those cutscenes took me back to that 2001 christmas sitting on the couch with hot cocoa playing Shenmue 1. God those calls made the game so worth it.
Its weird hearing Ryo call Nozomi by her last name when he's always called her by her first name in English. It makes their relationship sound so formal. And Nozomi sounds way to ditzy
Troy Wilson I know what you mean. I guess they wanted to stick to how they do it in Japanese, although why twenty years later search me. Lol goes to show how different our cultures are; we don’t usually call our peers by their last names. IMO it comes off as sarcastic or cynical.
Nozomi was great in the first game because she sounded very mature and comforting to listen to.

It's pretty cool that Joy is voiced by Lisle Wilkerson again. It sounds like her anyway. Fun fact: she didn't just voice Joy, but also Xiu Ying. In Shenmue II I mean.

All the voices are different, especially Fuku-San. I miss the original voices.
the japanese voices are pretty close to their originals however. i prefer those anyway, better voice acting.

It's not Mother's Earth like in the English version of Shenmue and they don't actually say "Comrades" in the Japanese audio either. They actually say "My Friend".

I wish Ryo could’ve talked to Guizhang about his leg (it’s never confirmed but I very strongly believe he’d had to amputate it after that steel beam crushed it) and Joy, as the two of them were friends.
Was it really too hard to get the original cast back for a few lines?...... like come on

To be fair, the "cast" was made up of anybody they could find in japan that spoke english and called themself a voice actor. I wouldn't be surprised if they had trouble finding some of them, or if they were no longer doing voicework

That's what I've been wondering too. It's probably a backer thing.
Be good to see some of these old characters making appearances and crossing roads with Ryo again.
Ryo one of the typical main protagonist who isn't into romance but understandable given the situation and his age (I'm almost certain most kids in Asia don't really date and just focus on school even if they do find a classmate they like). But once things are resolved or if shen and Nozomi life is more at stake again, it be interesting to see who he truly likes that's if he does have any romantic feelings towards them at all.
I know Ryo is the character who has a lot of talent and he is currently too young and haven't learnt enough to be a master (I kinda like this as it's more realistic, even prodigy don't become formidable masters even when they learn at a very young age).
In any case it's kinda off in this game as to how much trouble he agaisnt Yanlang, I uderstand about the red snake leader as that guy is a pro martial artist and a proper leader of a gang but Ryo had learnt so much and yet couldn't beat Yanlang who is just a higher than the lowest level thug and who doesn't have much skill and just goes on swinging using brute force.
Too bad Tommy Wiseau is not Tom's voice this time.

Don't really like the voice and character of Nozomi in this version. The original Nozomi voice actress's voice was really sweet and gentle sounding; this actress sounds too Westernized in her manner of speech and somewhat harsh; her voice is not soothing at all to listen to, unlike the original. And also the original already revealed her feelings about Ryo so you would think she would sound more overjoyed to be hearing from the guy she has feelings for after so long. It's a shame that they couldn't get the original voice actors but I certainly appreciate that they thought to include this feature at all; it kind of forges a nice connection with the original episodes' characters.
Maybe Nozomi's accent and manner changed due to her moving to Canada. Maybe that is why she sounds westernised (as an explanation for the story.)

Ok! the date in-game is still 1987. Oh snap from Tom did not happen until the late 1990's. Unless... Tom was the originator of the Oh snap.
The code to talk to Guizhang was all wrong It's supposed to be "Father's heaven" and "Comrades"

I made thread about this in the shenmuedojo. Her voice actress did aweful job terrible acting does not suit character at all.
Nozomi is a Canadian born Japanese, but aside from that, it's true that her newer voice actress just didn't fit her. Hell, she was almost completely out of character too
This game was such a flop. It's funny that the best parts are when we remember the last games.
