Air Force has a 40 year history of running the option/triple option, but this year Hammond threw the ball a lot. The only reason we ran the triple option primarily in this game was to control the clock. This was won by fabulous coaching vs mediocre coaching. D Hammond III you are the best QB we've had at USAFA. Remsberg way to make us proud man. T Jackson I've watched you all year kick ass, too. O Line, you guys rock, too. Receivers have stood-out all year. I agree. Every single game this year our run defense was weak. When they did hold up, the secondary got penalties. I hope we can fix this. We are so much fun to watch when our offense is on the field.
Clearly the triple option did not get the better of the air raid. AF coaches got the better of WSUs coaches. When WSU was stopped twice at the goal line it was because the best passing team in the country tried to run it in. They scored three touchdowns passing it in the same area. Coaches blew this one.
Michael MacDonald Sorry to hear you just woke up this year. I do think it is true that Leach doesn’t coach defense particularly well. That’s why guys like Tracy Claeys and Alex Grinch have been his defensive coaches. Still, one thing you can say for sure is that AF’s defense wasn’t particularly tough either. Cougs had the ball for less than 17 minutes...actually 16 something. 5 drives into the red zone, actually inside the ten. Think about that. In 16+ minutes AF gave up 5 drives into the red zone. 3 passing TDS. And those receivers were alone! Wide open. 28 completions. And 366 yards passing. In 16+ minutes. So, yes the offense was tough, but? Believe me I know a lot about AF football. I have been a season ticket holder for 15 years. Another way to look at the teams over the years is to compare our record against Boise State to AF’s record against BSU. We’re 8-1. AF?

All these people that are talking about how the option outperformed the air raid are forgetting that The Cougs had the ball for 17 minutes, hit three TDS, 28 completions, and 366 yards. Pretty decent production I think. Because AF controlled the clock the game looked far more lopsided than it was. Even after the late TD the Cougs were moving the ball until a long penalty. The game was in doubt until that point.
Steve Leid true enough. I am a Coug, but live in Colorado Springs and have season tickets to AF. He had a great year and is underrated. One thing AF did well this game that helped him was receiver and downfield blocking. Most of our players had probably barely seen a triple option let alone one like AFs. Actually Wazzu’s kicker was a Lou Groza finalist! Still shaking my head. Still we could have, should have, and DID pass for three TDS in the same area.
