Agreed. Remember a scene with mustafa n fatmogul in the little boat. Fatmagul asked him when did he knew he fell in love with her? His answer was something like, ah that girl can cook me a good meal. Thats how he responded, instead of something romantic. So i agree with you that she would only be his possession if they were married. To do duty work including making him a father. Totally agreed with you there!!
I think it has a lot to do with traditions in certain parts of the world. A wife is a possession you love her but she really has no say, no mind of her own....
He would want her to just stay at home while he would be away to the sea, he would be irrationally jealous and I'm sure he would cheat on her along the way...

Yeah, just see the way he treated Azude. He was a possessive man, and Fatmagul didn't get too meet that side of him because they didn't get married. She only met the kind and sweet side of him through their relationship. Once married, he was gonna become his true self.
For the first time, Fatmagül shows her preferences to everyone, she chooses Kerim over Mustafa. She conveys that Kerim is someone she cares about, someone so important to her that she even defends him by putting her physical integrity at risk. She also sends Mustafa a message, he has become one of her enemies.
