Excellent videos. There are a number of videos out there showing how to pull a cilinder, but none like these two, actually addressing specifically the problems beginners come up against, why they happen, and how and if they can be solved. You're a real teacher. Kudos.
you are a great teacher - i wish i had you at my college when i went. my teacher was never there or always in his office - in two years we saw maybe 6 demos - i had to teach myself from utubers like you and books and videos. you are amazing. keep up the videos they are very very helpful.
"If you were in Monday nights class....LOL" that was funny and I don't even know what Monday nights class is! Would love to see what you were working on at the end!
Thanks, I made that first goof myself today in the studio, pulled too much at the top. I would also like to see more on how to shape pieces by adding a belly or narrowing at the neck.
Thanks so much. I watched all of the help videos many times and I have really improved on my cylinders. I felt it when the clay finally went up instead of out.
And I thought my accidental bowl from poor pulling was beautiful :)) i’ve been in front of a wheel maybe four times so far. Love practicing little bits that i glean from your videos.
HI TIM TANKS FOR THE TIPS. TO SHOW THE 'CHANEL' CUT A CYLINDER IN HALF [LENGTH WAYS] WHILE STILL ON THE WHEEL DISCARD ONE HALF AND SHOW THE FINGER POSITIONING AND PULLING MOTION NEAR THE CUT ON THE HALF STILL STUCK TO THE STATIONARY WHEEL .ITS LIKE SEEING THE PULL IN CROSS SECTION .
Dear internet! Try not to stay in the one spot for too long. You will get the feel. So finger in and out of pot slowly go up, not too slow, as you get near the top ease the pressure. If the pot begins to wobble on the way up ease the pressure on the fingers. Have at least six balls of clay in front of you so you can go onto the next one straight away. You will notice you will further up after a while and eventually get to the top. Does that make sense.
Please try to show how to squeeze the clay in a way to make it go up instead of wider, that was the problem I had with my last pot, everything was going well until it suddenly got super wide.
Love your videos and talks so much! I actually want to know more about what’s going on in your Monday class lol. One thing I don’t appreciate that much.., you seem to scrape your hand to the bucket reaaally hard, the noise gets on my nerves every time. But it’s quiz and I move on to all the rest of good stuff:)
Hahaha you got your wall pulled in 47 seconds. In ceramics class today it took me 50 minutes to center it and then make the whole, and right when I tried to pull the wall it tore :( I guess i have a long way to go
today was my first day on the wheel in school and it was so much fun. i feel like i did pretty good for my first time! I was just wondering if there is any way to prevent your hands from getting cuts from the clay and the wheel because i have a couple on the heel of my hand. Thanks!
One problem I have is sometimes I am getting lopsided so that the wall on one side is thick and the other is thin. How am I managing to do this and how do I correct it?
Not the thrower in the video, but I might be able to help. You're probably starting to move the clay too quickly. If you ease into applying pressure when you start pulling, you shouldn't have the issue(And ease off the pressure when the walls almost done being pulled). Try to not move too much clay in one pull, you should have more than one pull
Help Tim! I have one more way things can go wrong and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. When I start pulling the clay that is coming up actually separates. Any advise? My guess is that I'm pushing too hard???
a lot of times I get one side of the wall thicker than the other, how do i fix that. Am I just not centering right? also, I think I get the pot centered but then move it off center while I'm opening it a lot of times. What's up with that?
Hey time a problem that I always have is that my whole start off in the cent but the it becomes off. The wall on one side will he thr locker than the other. Any suggestions ?
''don't wait! Click NAOW! '' haha awesome. Well I'm stuck at this, i can't pull the damn clay! It just stays there :P and when i get it up a bit its super wobly or 2 thin right above the bottom. And it drives me crazy! haha SO thx for these videos man! :D
Hi Tim, I'm a beginner and when I pull up, a ring of clay will just come off the top of the cylinder instead of staying adding height. Is this because my walls aren't wet enough? Thank you!
no it is that you are not slowly releasing the pressure on the wall as you get to the top. The most pressure is at the bottom and less and less moving up. ua-cam.com/video/UNR7dDJs6K4/v-deo.html
@munahal100 because things that are not challenging are no fun to master. Everyone can throw, it takes time and practice but when it clicks it will all be worth it.
well there are a few options not knowing too much about your process. not using a fuzzy bat can help, centering quicker, or use a different clay. after you learn to center it wont be so bad. just suck it up little clay soldier and carry on =D
You're using too much pressure on the inside hand and it's likely that your wall is too narrow. I would recommend starting with a rather wide wall, doing your pulls, there collaring in at the base.
my teacher tells me to keep my hand flat on the outside, 4 fingers on the inside when pulling. every time I pull, i get and odd, wonky lip and thin walls.
Olivia Terry i got some new you may not like, keep doing what your teacher is asking you to do. Throwing is a process that works because of the steps from start to finish. If you change a little you may mess up some stuff. They also know how to diagnose what’s wrong while your there keep asking them.
Seriously... I really can't stop watching your videos. You're just THE best teacher ever. Thank you!
Epic last demonstration lol You ROCK the teaching word.

This has helped a lot.
Struggling with wheel speed and wall thickness but this certainly helped. Thank you

Your humor is wonderful! Thanks for keeping it light and laughable, while teaching.
"you made an ugly bowl" You are now officially my favourite teacher because you say exactly what you think. Thank you. X

Tim - Thanks as always - you're the best - welcome back
I love this... had to get another glass of wine to find another of your videos to watch. this is great!!!! thanks.

Were you talking about me in these videos, lol?! I've hade every one of these issues. Thanks for these videos.
These are the best videos!!! Thank you so much!!!
Thanks,m Tim.That was most enlightening. What was that at the end? It looked interesting.
"Don't do that, you're just wasting your time"😂😂😂

Ahahahahahaha, that last tip at 6:38 , when the clay was to fast, and just exploded and went everywhere would be so awesome to see in slowmotion. :D

The inside hand is pushing out, just above the base, the outside hand , well actually finger is placed under the ridge theminsidem

It said click any of these... it must be because I’m using a phone. 🤣
True~~~ LIKE your attitude! =)
Not pulling off the rim helped me a lot.
this is soo hard for me! i'm the only one in my class that still can't do this :( but thanks for the video!

@mzzstylish Most often the people who do poorly in the beginning, but persevere do the best in the end.
Oh no, now I have to do that "cylinder exploding in every direction" thing in next class because it looks so hilarious. :D

Oh I do this too! I keep making ugly donuts and the leftover lump of clay becomes less and less until all I can throw is a thimble.
@munahal100 because things that are not challenging are no fun to master. Everyone can throw, it takes time and practice but when it clicks it will all be worth it.

my jar keeps turning into a plate suddenly

@@timseepots thank you, that helps. I will keep trying!
@MsRedHare You need to use more water
i SUCK at this! why did i take pottery class? :/
The problem I have is pulling the wall upwards /:
Where else are you pulling it David
Who wants to see your problem
manish p that’s what the video is for. I show how to fix issues. Had you watched the video before critiquing it you would have caught that.
