    Thanks for the fantastic explanation. Not only did it help me to revise a few concepts but also helped me understand those concepts in a much better way. Subscribed the channel, looking forward to more such content

    If the Siphon working is due to weight difference, then what is it that keeps the particles linked together like the chain that constantly pulls water. If liquid particles are not linked together, they can't create siphons.

    • @ENGINEERINGSTREAMLINED
      @ENGINEERINGSTREAMLINED  8 місяців тому +2

      I think you have not understood the concept clearly. The first theory of siphoning which I discussed due to weight difference is used by a man named Vittorio Zonca which failed as I said in the video. Subsequently I said, siphoning happens due to pressure difference. In the beaker which is at a higher elevation, the end of the pipe is at atmospheric pressure and the end of the pipe on the other beaker (at lower elevation) is at a lower pressure (vacuum) which initiates the flow of the liquid. The liquid flow stops when the liquid level on both the beakers becomes equal resulting the pressure on both the sides to become equal.

    The demonstration assumes that the height of beaker 2 is rising as beaker 1 is lowering. If, for example, beaker 2 is actually a river drawing the water away, then all of beaker 1 will empty. correct? If the tube on the downside is significantly wider than the tube on the upside so that the weight of the water on the downside is increased (say, if the both tubes were completely filled at the beginning and then released so that no air is allowed to enter from either side but water can escape), would that affect the maximum height of the siphon?

    • @ENGINEERINGSTREAMLINED
      @ENGINEERINGSTREAMLINED  4 місяці тому +1

      The maximum height of the siphon is not dependent on the dimensions of the pipe. It is only dependent on the atmospheric pressure, density of fluid and acceleration due to gravity (g). So, using a tube with wider diameter on the downside will not affect the maximum height of the siphon.

    what if we put both beaker in same elevation but the level of liquid is different... will siphon work?

    • @ENGINEERINGSTREAMLINED
      @ENGINEERINGSTREAMLINED  2 роки тому +8

      Even if we put both the beakers at same elevation but if the level of liquid is different in the beakers then siphon will work. Because as shown in the video, as long as there will be difference between z1 and z2 elevations, potential energy difference will cause the flow to sustain. But when the liquid level in the both the beakers become same, the flow will stop.

      Thanks for the comment. I will have to think how to calculate the time required for the liquid level in both reservoirs to be at the same level. If I get the answer, I will comment it here.

    @4:18 you said h was the difference in elevation. Is there a maximum distance between the two beakers? In other words what if beaker 1 was 500 metres in elevation from beaker 2 would siphoning still work?

    • @ENGINEERINGSTREAMLINED
      @ENGINEERINGSTREAMLINED  Рік тому +1

      No, siphoning will not work for such heights. The maximum height h for which siphoning works is 10.32m. It has been shown in the video @6:57.

    • @foreduca8099
      @foreduca8099 Рік тому +1

      @@ENGINEERINGSTREAMLINED Just want clarification. You used two "heights". One height is @4:18 and this is the distance between water surface in beaker 1 and the outlet in beaker 2. This is the height I was talking about. Is there a maximum distance that beaker 1 can be from beaker 2 vertically. I understand that @6:57 you were talking about how high the water can travel upward. I'm asking how far the water can travel downward. if there is even a maximum limit?

    • @ENGINEERINGSTREAMLINED
      @ENGINEERINGSTREAMLINED  Рік тому +3

      @@foreduca8099 There is no maximum vertical height limit between the two beakers. As long as water moves into the pipe (height limit of 10.32m) from beaker 1 due to atmospheric pressure, the water will flow to beaker 2 due to gravity. So, even for a 500m vertical distance between two beakers water should flow from beaker 1 to 2. However if atmospheric pressure on the liquid surface of beaker 1 is very low due to higher elevation, the siphoning may not work properly.

    Once the fluid stalls/ the maximum height is reached, will the flow re-establish itself once the upper reservoir level rises? Or does the break require repriming? Thank you.

    • @ENGINEERINGSTREAMLINED
      @ENGINEERINGSTREAMLINED  2 роки тому +1

      That is a very good question. The flow stops when the liquid level in both the beakers/reservoirs is at the same level. If you increase the liquid level in the upper reservoir after the flow has stopped then it will require repriming to start the flow again. But if you fill the upper reservoir when the flow is still continuing then the liquid will continue to flow and siphoning will work.

    If beyond 10.32 m height siphoning will not work then what should be the minimum for the syphon to work??
    Why you didn't teach that part?

    • @ENGINEERINGSTREAMLINED
      @ENGINEERINGSTREAMLINED  2 роки тому +2

      That is a very good question. In the video , at time 4:30, I have explained the Bernoulli's equation principle for siphoning. Here you can see, when there is a difference between water level (z1-z2) in the two beakers, then only the flow starts. If the water level in both beakers is at same elevation (z1 = z2) as shown at time 1:06, the siphoning will stop. So there is no minimum height for siphoning to work. It will start only when there is a difference between the water level in the beakers.

    Hi. Pressure in this case is all about weight (mass + gravity) whereby atmophere's weight (assuming the air in the room is connected to the atmosphere outside)+ the weight of the water (including the weight in the tube, makes one side heavier (we see the tube is longer on the side where it goes down so there's more weight- weight of the atmosphere + water on the left side). Air gap will break this weight difference and will stop the flow (draining the one with less weight but it won't drain the whole bottle on the left coz' that total weight as a continous thing atmosphere's weight + water weight was broken).
    God bless.

    • @ENGINEERINGSTREAMLINED
      @ENGINEERINGSTREAMLINED  Рік тому +2

      Hello Seven
      The siphoning does not work only because weight of the water on one side of the tube is heavier. If that were the case, then when the level of water in both the beakers become equal then also the flow should have continued. But the flow stops as soon as the water level in both the beakers become equal. Its because in Bernoulli's Principle, the sum of pressure energy + kinetic energy + potential energy becomes equal in both the beakers.

      @@ENGINEERINGSTREAMLINED Thanks for the correction.
      This isn't Mariotte's Bottle/Siphon principle then?
      By the way what principle is used in water dispensers, the one where the gallon of water is turned over the dispenser? Also what principle is use in the automatic pet drink feeder for dogs and cats?
