Well as a cast iron restoration business I have some advise.
    Throw that baking soda away.
Use the vinegar at 50/50 with water scrubbing the inside of the pan with a stiff brush. Several times until the rust is gone. Wash with soap and water. Dry completely with paper towels then heat on stove to remove any remaining moisture. Then the rest of your process is fine. I would recomend crisco for your first two or three seasoning cycles. That way you only need to heat oven to 425 for and hour. Then first few cooking cycles cook high fat food like bacon then maybe carmalizing some onions and real butter. This will give the skillet a good start. The baking soda neutralizes your vinegar and made it useless. Vinegar is a mild acid and will remove the rust. Don't use baking soda to restore a rusty skillet. Salt is a better abrasive to scrub a skillet to clean it if you happen to get food residue left in it. Good luck!

Not to be disrespectful but refined canola oil carbonizes better also has a much higher smoke point of 475 to 490 degrees fahrenheit which produce a far more durable seasoning than crisco or lard will ever achieve. Better yet Avocado oil if you like the taste it's smoke point is 500 to 520 degrees fahrenheit. The biggest myth out there is the best seasoning oil is flaxseed oil it's smoke point is lower than crisco and it carbonizes so hard it's brittle and thermal cycles crack the seasoning coating and it flakes. Don't tell me because I put the oil on to thick is why it flaked either, because I wipe it down to remove all the excess and when I put it in the oven with my white oven mitts it's dry to the touch nothing on my mitts. To bake the seasoning in. Furthermore flaxseed isn't a cooking oil it's a condiment oil it's low smoke point makes it carcenogenic to cook with a big no no as far as cooking. Same with any seed oil. And you were definitely correct about the baking soda and Vinegar. I mean I would've cleaned it with straight 30% vinegar undiluted no water watch the rust disintegrate rinsed it then use baking soda and water to neutralize the vinegar so it don't continue eating into the iron. Rinse one more time put it on the stove to heat it dry and then do the first coat of seasoning and bake at 500° for 1hr. Let cool in oven till room temp repeat 5 or 6 times based on results till BLACK LOCK JON STYLE IS ACHIEVED! LOL 😆

Wow, you've sparked interesting discussions in your comments section! I thought I was seasoning my new, "pre-seasoned" cast iron skillet properly, but when I checked last week, I saw that it's got a bunch of rust on it. Maybe I didn't season it since it said it was pre-seasoned ... I can't remember! Anyway, it was the Lodge two-piece iron skillet set, just like the one you restored, so I'm reading up on removing the rust from you and your commenters! Thanks Old Man!

You'll frequently find cast iron pans with food cooked onto the interior. These may be cleaned by soaking them with vinegar and scouring them carefully. Once you have cleaned the exterior, the standard format of wiping the surfaces with oil (I use lard) and baking at 450° for an hour and allowing the pan to cool in the oven until warm to the touch will do it. Cure with oil at least twice and more properly three or four times. I have a Wagner fry pan that I have done that with and it's a marvel to cook with.

A great place to find cast iron is your local scrap iron place just found a 10" chicken fryer, a 10 " regular skillet and another 10" skillet plus a lid that will fit either of the skillets. I paid .30 cents per pound and it only cost me 6.00 dollars for all. Happy hunting.
