All The Football - Episode 9, Day 15 - Euston to Manchester United Football Ground
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 тра 2017
- It's Sunday 21st May, and we're out to really to do just one station today, but it's an important one - the only day Geoff and Vicki can get a train to Manchester United Football Ground this summer.
Plus a bonus interview with Richard Evans, a Southeastern driver (even though, the interview was done on a Southern train!)
This video was originally intended to be published last week, but due to the terrible events at Manchester Arena on the Monday the day after we were there, we delayed its publishing.

ROUTE - London Euston - Milton Keyes - Stockport - Manchester Piccadilly - Manchester United Football Ground - walk back to Manchester Piccadilly - Stockport (via Congleton branch) - Milton Keynes - London Euston
Richard the driver's experience add a whole new meaning to "branch line"
Richard Gillin Yes, makes you wonder how long before he "twigged' what was happening !!
leaf it out :-)
I bet he got some stick that day!
his bark is worse than his bite! sorry, I'll get my coat.....
He should take a bough.
Vicki was last seen being dragged away by Police after getting involved in a massed brawl with the away fans.
Jesus christ this comment wins
It's in the deleted scenes
She's part of the firm
Vicki is well ‘ard.
impressive, very nice
"I love a good canal,"
says Geoff.
Next project!
All the Docks!
He loves a good congleton canal
You can actually get to Old Trafford by Canal boat really nice relaxed way to do the trip having done it by train (has not been running the last 2 I went to) and by tram (because the train was not running) and by Barge because my son suggested it.
Sadly on all 3 occasions BHAFC have lost.
All the locks
St James Park station in Exeter is adjacent to the football ground and is on the Paignton to Exmouth service and is used on non matchdays too. It was called Lion's Holt until 1946 and the football club actually contribute to the upkeep of the station.
Three cheers for Richard! What a top guy!
"I literally have no idea what they were shouting." Yeah, about right for Man Utd fans ;)
u-n-i-t-e-d. United are the club for me. with a nick nack paddy wack give a dog a bone, why don't palace fook off home. man utd supporter for 40 years and I speak better english than you do mate!
I'll miss this series a lot when it ends :(
Glad yall are ok
Seriously no where near done. aha
The Roaming Tofu Still lots to come yet 😀
The Roaming Tofu what a fabulous name you have!
Thanks c:
Kembrek 83 I think the website says they're planning a full documentary film to be made at the end?
great video with a few cameos from myself in the background shame we lost the game. great to meet and chat with you both
Jonathan P great to meet you Jon!! 🙂
I recently found out there's an Old Trafford station at the south stand. This video perfectly captured the station and the matchday atmosphere at the East stand. Am not visiting Manchester anytime soon as it is a 24 hour flight for me. So thank you very much for showing me around!
Hello There, a great video, I do love the architecture of both Euston and Manchester Railway Stations and it was good that you had that positive and informative interview with Richard Evans. Keep up the good work! Cheers Peter :)
Shame you didn't film Vicki's reaction when she woke up and saw that scarf. That would have been hilarious
If you like canals keep an eye out for the Huddersfield Narrow Boat Canal when you pass over the Saddleworth Viaduct on the Huddersfield to Man Victoria line (it's between Marsden and Greenfield stations)!
Yay for Congleton!
Glad you liked the view from the Viaduct, could practically see my house!
Great video as always, I didn't look too bad either its clear you have some very skilled editors :-) Keep up the good work and, hop e to see you in a few months for a high speed ride as promised.
hey Richard! thank you!!! :-) G&V.
Dad Rail you were fantastic Richard, my favourite part!
Hi Dad Rail - coming to this a bit late I'm afraid, so apologies if you've been asked this before. Are the emergency brakes on a train a bit different, ie. more controlled, to just slamming on the anchors like you might do in a car?
This reminds me of the time I was for research internship at the University of Sussex. The accommodation was the one nearest to Falmer train station, and Amex Stadium, home of Brighton & Hove Albion, is literally across the track.
I've been all over Britain on the railways, in the 80's I had an All Line Rover on a few occasions, but on this trip you've visited a station I've never been to ! Judging by the service frequency I think it's highly likely that one's going to remain "unticked" on my list!!
You're on a ROLL (!!) great work - captured the essence of the event (!!) that's very difficult :-)
I've yet to be disappointed by the stingers at the end of the episodes; this one's my favourite thus far. :-)
Cheers mate
I'm more of a Quiddich fan myself. But we have both Footballs in my area. The American has a huge stadium with a light rail station that services more than it. The Rest of the World football stadium is smaller but still very popular, serviced by bus, as is most of our public transit. But trains of various sorts are making a come back.
I'm a Liverpool fan, so this episode is hard to stomach, but I have done, and also 'liked' the episode, as I'm going through each one clicking on the thumbs up on every one. I feel it's my duty!
Victoria, there's a way to figure out what type of train it is
look at the numbers. if the train has 6 numbers it's a multiple unit. in this case the first 3 numbers are the class of train
the types of trains are broken up like so:
1xx - diesel multiple unit
2xx - diesel electric multiple unit
3xx - electric multiple unit (25kV AC overhead lines - exceptions are the 313, 319 and a couple of electrostar classes which are dual voltage)
4xx - southern region, 750 V DC third rail
5xx - merseyrail electrics (750 V DC third rail)
then there's some more modern trains that don't fur this pattern any longer such as the class 700 (new Thameslink trains) and class 800 (IEP) but in general that's how it's broken down.
you were on a 323 btw, a 3 car electric multiple unit that takes power from the 25kV AC overhead line system.
You can tell if your on a sprinter because the number at the front will always be with 15x xxx
I. e.
150 - sprinter
153 - single car sprinter
155 - regional sprinter
156 - super sprinter
158 - express sprinter
159 - a 3 car variety of the 158 solely in use with south west trains.
Anthony Holroyd cheers, I for one will be using your lovely guide! Lots of 153s around my neck of the woods. I have a real fondness for them which I can't quite explain.
Anthony Holroyd Thanks for this! Super useful!!
different numbers signify different families of trains too so just looking at the DMU's (those starting with a 1)
14X - pacer
15X - sprinter
16X - networker (turbo)
17X - turbostar
with the exception of the 175 which is not a turbostar.
175 & 180 - Coradia
185 is an odd one. they are technically in the 'Desiro' family by Siemens even though the rest of that family (class 350, 360, 380 etc. are all electric multiple units or E.M.Us
Karen Pinchbeck I know what you mean. I work for Scotrail up in Aberdeen and whilst I mostly work on 170's (which are everywhere) I love getting the opportunity to work one of our 158s. They're older, tattier and noisier but I love working them and I can't really explain why.
I grown when ever an arriva 150 approaches. They're always dirty, noisy and slow. Arriva have refurbished their 158s and they're much nicer now. I like 175s the best though.
Mr Dadrail..... he's a freight train driver now, top fella 👍👍
Well, I was in a All The Stations video without even realising it, you can just about see my ginger hair in the background on the platform at Piccadilly. 13:51 from Piccadilly to MU Football Ground. And in the same carriage too. How on earth did I miss you guys?!
Jonny Kyle
Are you trolling? There are no 13.51 in this vid.
swededude1992 the 13:51 Manchester Piccadilly - Manchester United Football Ground, not 13:51 minutes into the video...
This video is only 12:33 in length.
stupid youtube converting times into timestamps.
Love the PA announcement bleep
It used to be called Old Trafford Station. Used it many times back in the 70s. You would get a day return from your local station via Manchester Piccadilly and probably still do.
Getting the train to away days is the best feeling
You went through 'my station' of Kidsgrove - shame you didn't get off but understood you were on a tight schedule - but I do know you'll be back again to cover others locally. Well done both of you :-)
Very enjoyable
I know I am late to the party (I discovered ATS only last week and have been binge-watching), but in my country there's a couple of stations like this:
* Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA, which serves the Amsterdam Arena, the home turf of AFC Ajax;
* Rotterdam Stadion, which serves De Kuip, where Feijenoord plays its home games;
* Eindhoven Stadion, which serves the Philips Stadion, home turf of PSV Eindhoven
* Heerenveen IJsstadion, which serves the Thialf skating rink, where international speed skating competitions are held.
Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA has a regular service by NS, the main Dutch railway company. The others are only used during special events. Curiously, of these, only Rotterdam Stadion is on the official list of railway stations, Eindhoven Stadion and Heerenveen IJsstadion are not.
No worries, my story about discovering All The Stations is quite similar :-)
Don't forget Amsterdam ArenA (without Bijlmer in the name), which is used for supporters of the visiting team when there is a risk of clashes. It's just north of Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA, and its one platform directly connects to the visiting team supporters' area in the stadium, keeping them segregated all the way from the platform to their seats and back.
I wonder how one would try visiting it if their goal is to simply visit all the stations in the Netherlands...
Indeed Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA sees regular service too, as it also serves some other entertainment venues, a shopping centre and one of Amsterdam's major office districts, along with nearby residential and industrial areas and metro and bus connections. It's actually quite a normal station, not specifically there for just the single venue. Still a good mention though!
Loving the content guys 👌 gonna keep watching, looking forward to some cheeky drone footage as well 😜... shame you didn't have something like an Apple Watch or a FITBIT here to track your days 😂
Omg, i was at old trafford watching the match! I actually flew from heathrow airport haha
Theme tune mega mix at the end.. Groovy...
Imagine this with Social Distancing
I belive that many of the arivia trains Wales services on a Sunday from Chester do that same maneuver at the platforms at Picadilly
RIP to all those victims 💙💙
The train that took the All the Trains team to and from Manchester United was a Class 323 EMU. Northern Rail are sending these off lease as soon as replacement stock arrives, when they will likely join the larger batch in the West Midlands franchise, currently London Midland.
Old Trafford is an area of Greater Manchester and not just a football ground, the football ground station is now closed so if you want to travel by rail you have to get a tram to old Trafford which stops near the cricket ground, also known as old Trafford
The class 323's are Hyper Networkers. I've been on them in Birmingham even though I live in Essex
I am completely enjoying all of the videos, especially this one. As someone who lives in "New" Trafford I like seeing the shots of the "Old" Trafford football ground. The "New" Trafford is Trafford, Pennsylvania, USA. We are about 15 miles east of Pittsburgh. George Westinghouse named the town Trafford because it reminded him of the Trafford Park section of Manchester. Keep up the great work this series is a lot of fun.
LG Chiller I’m surprised I’m not the only Yinzer here lol.
Rumour has it that Arsenal already have their own Underground station in London and that there are plans to build a railway station near Anfield in Liverpool.
In Glasgow there's already a Subway station at Ibrox (round the corner from the stadium, home to Rangers FC).
Geoff, at about 11.40 in the vid you went all Northern in the commentary!!!!! Brill !!!!
It suddenly occurs to me that I'm disappointed that your theme music isn't Flanders and Swann's "Slow Train".
That's that place that has special allotment land inside. Shippea H is more inviting and was there yesterday 😁
Recorded for posterity of course, the service to this station was suspended at the club's request in 2018
Why
@@zakbakali1870 I'm not 100% sure of the reason, but the impression I get is that it was safer to have fans arriving by means of the two Metrolink stops that serve Old Trafford. It's also possible that it was disruptive to run the service on match days as it starts in an already congested section of line, platforms 13 and 14 at Manchester Piccadilly
@@SiVlog1989 apparently it was because of health and safety concerns because of a bomb scare Northern have said
you both need to come up north more often beautiful scenery and railways..visit man city...and you were not far from trafford park freight terminal..and you went through my home town...macclesfield 🖒🖒
The day I missed a great opportunity to meet you guys :( maybe next time, if there is a next time!
i always take the train to old trafford cricket ground and walk from there. If the croud is really large and full of people who don't know the area, I get off at trafford bar stop and walk. about a mile.
Here's to hoping there is a special train to Norwich for a Canary match when the season starts again!
HI GUYS RICHARD HERE FROM DAD RAIL
I remember getting the train to from Levenshulme to Old Trafford and back in 96, to see Germany v Russia. Loads of German fans on the way back.
Ahh great you went to United :) fantastic club best in the world and yes I'm a fan!
All The Stations are you doing a Q&A soon or when you finish going to all the stations
Who won the match?
Small bit of non-railway trivia: GMP traditionally names its horses after characters from Dickens.
The train they got to Man Utds ground was a 323 emu, not a Sprinter as Vicky said.
I live in Milton Keynes!
So guys, what happened with Episode 5???
I can´t find it!
Or is it out of order like this Episode (episode 9)?
Sorry to bother you, but could you please tell me what day you do Herne Hill [HNH] please.
So, did you get the tram back into town, or wait for the match to end?
Are there any other awkward stations that can only be reached on a certain day or days?
Euston is a serious contender for most horrible large British station, and there's no shortage of competition.
Borderlands have you been to leeds bc Yikes
Leeds is pretty horrible, but Euston is to railways what a can of Special Brew is to real ale. It's a dystopian underground transit camp and psycho-geographic nightmare.
Birmingham New Street is dark and horrible.
London Liverpool Street is weird and confusing when you come out of the tube.
The staff at King's Cross are unhelpful despite what the documentaries say.
Euston with a good amount of daylight and plenty of choice for food/drink is pretty alright.
There's a new New Street remember
Borderlands Euston is going to be upgraded because of HS2 and I have been to Euston many times with no problems
Dad Rail!!!
Disappointed that Bill Bailey didn't make an appearance!
Maybe they could get Bill Bailey to play the All The Stations theme on one of the free pianos in a National Rail station.
You bought a half and half scarf you are evil
Re-watching this when the documentary dropped
What was that red ribbon thing at 0:22?
Did you have wait the dull 2 hour to get the train back? 😊
Very good but how many has wigan area got
I gather that plans are afoot to build a railway station close to Liverpool's Anfield stadium too.
When are you in aberdeen
7'23".... "This isn't the ground is it? Isn't this the car park?" 🤣🤣🤣
Actually Geoff, it's the world's largest public toilet.
LOL, "This is your Captain speaking! We are delayed a few minutes because of the wrong kind of leaves on the line." :-P
Yay my station Poynton
Geoff, that was a class 323
Already in the Midlands but what about the lines in the SW? Like lines down to Dover etc...
Graham Gillett They've completed all the lines in Kent. Go to www.allthestations.co.uk/map/ There's two awkward stations in Devon they've yet to complete and they still need to do Bristol/Taunton. They are slowly edging out of London. The route is very complex.
Class 390 are so nice
Richard Evans is DadRail just so you know :)
Hi to my favourite youtube couple, hope the trip is going good! have you any idea when you'll be in my native Southport, would love to come and say hallo! Best of luck with the rest of it all. Brendan
That was a Class 323
9:28 is that a maquette in the background?
Where's Milton Keynes? I don't see it!
My Home club in my Home town
Please tell me they do Stockport in another episode. How could they miss THAT going between Manchester and London?
Oh no... still annoys me to see people thinking a station was missed because it wasn’t filmed. They went to ALL the stations, people, all of them.
To this day I'm so upset Stoke didn't get any air time
@Used2B He must have visited it to get on the virgin train back to london euston :)
6:06 "Is it a sprinter?" Nooooo
David Frankal Sprinter, supersprinter, pacer.
It is a true shame that the station suspended operations in 2018.
Mantapp for last scene da video..hahaha
Manchester is my local staion to london but my local staion is accrington and blackburn
6:02 It is a Class 323.
Manchester United - The Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Company Football club
I love the All the Stations project you are doing, but why oh why when you are limited to 4 videos a week did you put out the trip to Old Trafford when we've already seen much of this before? Also i can understand getting the fast train up to Manchester, but why didn't you get the London Midland back to London, or change onto one so you could stop at so many more stations rather than whiz straight past so many? I guess you'll get many other opportunities to do the stations on this line as you travel up and down the country.
Matt Potter we've never seen Man Utd halt before, so it's an excellent reason for making a video about what is arguably the hardest station to visit in Britain! We then did exactly what you suggested - got a stopping service back via Congleton to Stoke rather than just get a fast train back from Manchester, and we included shots of all these stations in the video.
Congleton!
Geoff was like all the Man United fans, come up on the train from London
"only day in the whole summer"
yeah, there is only a week of summer anyway
Geoff Marshall what's your favourite football team
All The Stations scarf?
You could have done it during Carrick's testimonial as well...
Song at 10:32?
£8ea or 2 for £15, wow amazing savings of 6% there, must be black friday.
This episode is missing from the official playlist
No it's not. It's just slightly out of order - on purpose, because of the Manchester attacks.
As an American, it's kind of amazing (and great) to me that a driver would get out and clear branches off the line himself. Over here it's probably not allowed, and even if it were, the unions would never stand for it.
It'd be OK as long as the driver was also a member of the International Brotherhood of Tree Removers.
