I remember watching this when I was a kid in 2011 and being completely enthralled by the idea of creating one of these. I looked for months for an iron can but unfortunately never found one. Not that I had the tools or knowledge back then to make one anyway. Stumbling onto this video again literally a decade later at least made me smile, remembering a time when stuff like this was all that occupied my mind instead of tuition or finals. Though I’m a little late to this party, thank you for making this video.
Most cans were made out of 10 back in the 5060s and seventies it wasn't till the eighties and nineties when they switch to aluminum and if you're acting like this is new you are stupid and attached to your phone way too much
I never indicated that aluminum cans were a new thing. Not really sure what you hoped to accomplish with this comment but I hope you work through whatever it is you’re going through.
Best boats! What a lost art. I wish UA-cam had more quality videos like yours! I love learning from our older generation, all the wonderful things you can make. I built on 10 years ago, but this is so much better. I love the wick and oil!
My grandfather made me toys, with specs that i told him! It was fun to see what The result would look like, at that Time surpassed my expectations and was thrilled!
Steel cans Spray paint cans, hair spray cans, WD-40 Cans, brake fluid cans, they all have the dome that you need for boiler chamber, lots of steel cans around user your imagination. A mini butane torch with soldering flux or acid core solder will be enough heat to sweat the seams. Acid core solder is for plumbing, rosin core is for electrical soldering. You want acid core for this project. This is great project for an adult, as long as you have a 12 year old supervising 🤪 Good luck!
i think it's the so called 50\50 solder (or 40\60 is better but not the opposite 60\40), there's more lead than the electronic one and it's more robust, but actually if you clean very well the areas you need to solder, scraping em with a sharp cutter to take away the zinc etc, i think is the best solution rather than sanding or filing and you don't need necessarily an aggressive flux.... and you still need a thin iron sheet, i didnt know they make iron soda cans etc, i thought they were all aluminium
im no expert but id be keen to make one with aluminium cans, high temp silicone instead of solder & copper pipes for easy cold bending rather than brass.. given that its a pretty soft burn it should be fine & rather than fabricating a burner, why not just use the shell from a tealight candle? if by some chance the aluminium boiler melts, just make one from tougher metal, youve already saved many hours of work ;) & if high temp silicone is not to your liking why not use exhaust putty, also known as liquid steel =)
@@redoverdrivetheunstoppable4637 i think only America, Russia & Korea still use ferrous metals in some drinking cans.. the rest of the world realised decades ago that the zinc or galvanising is very toxic but as always it come down to cost & profit vs consumer ignorance
Neto Lope · The boiler is the only one problem because it should be resistant at more than 120 °C. Iron is easy to sold with plumbing solder. This soldering is heat resistant but not works with aluminium. Of course, boiler should be perfectly sealed. If you find only aluminium can, you can use epoxy glue with metal powder included. This glue is more heating resistant than others For the rest of the boat, aluminium is well.
Thank you, i really enjoyed your video. It was simple, yet instructive & with no intrusive background music (a failing of many videos). Thanks again. Loved it!
Thank you for this video, lots of fun, I've been reading the comments cause I hade a little problem and after building 3 chambers and making tests I found out that when you weld the pipes you have to push them all the way down to keep a higher level of water inside. This way duo don't have to worry about the flame. Thank you so much wonderful tuto
You're welcome.I'll certainly have a go as soon as I can remember who I lent my soldering iron to,and get it back. Its a very interesting project.and my 4 year grandson was thrilled watching it chug around after he'd had a bath and got out, taking care not to let him touch it of course.
Thank you for your instruction how to build a pop pop boat. It's great and reminded me when I was 10 years old.My friend had a similar boat like your and we took in the lake. We didn't know the boiler must fill with water first:) so the solder joint melted and the pipes collapsed when it was heated with a piece of candle. We didn't have solder gun to repair and that boat never run.Today I make a boiler and a burner, I test the boiler with blowing air in the pipe and the top is pop pop.Thanks.
Bonne construction. :o)
Very good and clear information to build a pop pop boat,I think anyone who are reasonably good with their hands could make one of following your instructions. And its good that its all in one video,I noticed one on YT went well into 20+ videos.not easy to follow.I did notice the small one I bought several years ago at the great Dorset Steam Fair has got an open boiler dish with the 2 tubes, where you have soldered a lid on yours,Mine works very good but reckon yours would be more efficient.5 stars
Good clip..very well presented..Remember my Dad putting one of these in my bath 55 years ago..I was fascinated....I just found one at a recycling centre the other day, and it works well...
Muchas gracias. Hace muchos años compre una en ciudad de Mexico a un anciano por la calle. Todavía la tengo y funciona, he intentado reproducirla y no he podido, ahora seguro que si.
I tested the same as the video and it worked so I also tested with the boiler-shaped turns and found the results until better and easier. Thanks to and I help a lot of your video.
I I watched your video. Congratulation. I think your engine is very well built. I'll try to inspire me for the next boat. Your submarine is superb too. Thanks for sharing your experience. Regards. Patrick from France

Yesterday, I bought a tin can of smoked herring, literally the first time in 40 years, not knowing that today, I would need it for the hull of a pop pop boat.
Thank you for your comment. Sometimes I also use a translator. I also like the done at home. Your Stirling engine is great! You are very smart and full of skills. There is no valve in an engine POPOP. This works because the water is expelled back and then sucked partly on the sides. So there is a slight resultant forward. On video, with each pulse, we see the boat back a bit before moving forward. The yield is much lower than that of a Stirling engine. Regards. Patrick.
I learned my lesson the hard way. I made it with hot glue and it melted it, but I figured it out so you can use hot glue but you have to be careful and use it right!

I saw your video. Your boat is very cute. It's a fact it is slow. The lenght of the pipes is important too. If for esthetic raison, you don't like to have long tubes at the rear of the boat, you can expand the tube in the front and then bend them to the rear. Experimenting again.

One of my favorite videos in UA-cam. Thank you!
Many thanks for this kind comment. Cheers
Great pop pop boat
Still in shock and amazed by how simple the burner is. Outstanding craftsmanship.
Thank you for this.
Many thanks
Fun stuff, think I will make one with my nephew :)
why would anyone dislike that? what a great, little boat!
This is great but i did find a easier way to make but thanks for the video :) and you helped the earth
Many thanks :)
That olive oil burner is amazing!!
I wonder if there is a way to make some sort of valve that would pull in fresh water.
The pressure changes within the mini boiler should do this as is.
That is a very good idea.
Electric coffee pots use a small tube with a check valve in them you can use for this. But it would not be a pop pop boat then. Great video btw.
@@ewingfabrications Many thanks. I will get a look to that post.
