My own original material and interpretation of "Someone Like you" by Adele.
It's not perfect but, hey, I did it on a whim just for fun. I played with some words here and there as well, like I said this is just one interpretation....
I love how this is a happy and sad song at the same time. Makes it fun to sign and interpret happy/sad emotion.
Hope you enjoy, thanks for watching. Constructive criticism appreciated!
***PLEASE NOTE: This video is not perfect, I am not a perfect model of how songs should be signed. I DO HAVE ASL experience BUT still learning how to sign SONGS. It is very difficult and this was just for fun, for practice and for feedback! Thanks for watching :)
Lyrics:
I heard that you're settled down,
That you found a girl and you're married now,
I heard that your dreams came true,
Guess she gave you things I didn't give to you,
Old friend, why are you so shy?
Ain't like you to hold back or hide from the light,
I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited,
But I couldn't stay away, I couldn't fight it,
I had hoped you'd see my face,
And that you'd be reminded that for me it isn't over,
Never mind, I'll find someone like you,
I wish nothing but the best for you, too,
Don't forget me, I beg,
I remember you said,
"Sometimes it lasts in love,
But sometimes it hurts instead,"
Sometimes it lasts in love,
But sometimes it hurts instead, yeah,
You know how the time flies,
Only yesterday was the time of our lives,
We were born and raised in a summer haze,
Bound by the surprise of our glory days,
I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited,
But I couldn't stay away, I couldn't fight it,
I had hoped you'd see my face,
And that you'd be reminded that for me it isn't over,
Never mind, I'll find someone like you,
I wish nothing but the best for you, too,
Don't forget me, I beg,
I remember you said,
"Sometimes it lasts in love,
But sometimes it hurts instead,"
Nothing compares,
No worries or cares,
Regrets and mistakes, they're memories made,
Who would have known how bittersweet this would taste?
Nevermind, I'll find someone like you,
I wish nothing but the best for you,
Don't forget me, I beg,
I remember you said,
"Sometimes it lasts in love,
But sometimes it hurts instead,"
Nevermind, I'll find someone like you,
I wish nothing but the best for you, too,
Don't forget me, I beg,
I remember you said,
"Sometimes it lasts in love,
But sometimes it hurts instead,"
Sometimes it lasts in love,
But sometimes it hurts instead.
This is my favorite Adele song, and seeing it in ASL really moved me more than the song itself.
Same
I love to come back to these videos. Just such a pleasure to watch.
I have reserved this word for the perfect moment...."gorgeous" she and the expression.
My God, you made me cry woman! I love how clean and easy your interpretation was. Normally people over word it but you did amazing! I honest to God felt emotion.
@yovonne7 Yes, I am still learning. I have my BA in Deaf Studies and ASL and now I am in an Interpreting Preparation Program. I have just recently started learning more about the interpreting side of ASL which is very different from just learning ASL! I really appreciate your comment considering you're an experienced professional and Coda! Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
Great job! You avoided signing the song in english and put so much emotion into it... I teared up. AWEOMSE
You, and your signing, are both absolutely gorgeous! Thanks for posting!
I really like your version of this. Sometimes I see asl songs on here and they're beautiful, but they're so different from the actual words of the song. Yes, it's usually the same meaning, but songs are written with specific words for a reason. So I really liked how you signed it very closely to the song. It's very similar to how I sign along when I listen to the song. Thank you!
Wow, you did a beautiful interpretation. I would say it was flawless. I'm taking a college course in ASL and did 1 year in High School, I think it's the most beautiful language in America. So expressive and so unique. Thanks :D
Excellent! Don't stop here. Do more. I love someone like you from Adele and my doughter
Great! So happy to watch music with loving sign language. I am deaf and I love to music with sign language. Do more songs with sign language. You have done well. Congratulations! Proud of u
I've been watching this video every morning before I go to school and I go over and over and over with it in my car. You are so beautiful and you sign so good!! I learned this and I'm teaching all of my friends this Asl :) Thank you so much.
that was so nice! My favourite part was when you held your breath before the "never mind, I'll find someone like you" part. Very well done. :)
AMAZING!!!!! Adele sings some beautiful songs about love. I am a Sign Language Student and I will be Interpreting my First Song in December. Needless to say I am NERVOUS, but I am watching and learning. Great Job!!!
I have been blessed with sight and hearing, and no I'm not saying that to boast, but though I have heard the song, Watching this put me on the brink of tears, SOOO Beautiful!!!
@TheBabyhita For that part I signed "AWFUL" and "WONDERFUL" Thanks for watching!
LOVE LOVE LOVE this version! Beautiful!
so happy to finally find an asl video of this song that is actually signed correctly - thank you -
oh this almost made me cry, although i cant read the signs i could feel the sensitivity of your expressions it almost seemed like it was your voice too, nice video.
WOW I am so jealous. I wish I could sign and understand ASL. This is amazing. Luckily I can feel the emotion attached to this.
fANTASTIC!! THE SIGNING, AS WELL AS YOUR EMOTIONS. WELL DONE
I like Adele and also sign language. Kisses from Brazil.
@valerie2021 I am not offended. What I did here was a mixture of many different forms of sign language, PSE, SEE ASL. I strive for more ASL but songs are difficult to sign and I prefer not to change them too much from the original artist's (Adele's) words. I appreciate your point though! Trust me! I know ASL but I didn't want to interpret the song too much because then it would be changed into only MY perspective. If that makes sense? Anyways, Thanks for watching and being an ASL advocate!! :)
@josie122114 Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed it :)
This was beautiful. I have never seen something like this before.
I noticed that your left handed? me too! Im learning ASL right now and i just want to say that I love this video. you can tell you put lots of emotion into it. Also its easy to read your signs since your lefty. haha good job! :)
i love how you used the i love you sign in your interpretation.
This is awesome, I'm just learning asl and I think it's beautiful. Your emotions are killer, and this is just perfect. I found myself signing and singing along.
I don't know anything about signing but I once read a post and this person made a big deal about signing with your left hand with all the confusion it causes and it was an "insult" to the deaf community but I don't see anybody making a deal about it here. I guess some people just take things to seriously. Beautiful song signed by a beautiful woman.
Love your interpretation!!!
I'm not hearing impared or anything, just learning to sign again. I like your style too! great job!
i like listen to your song.. nice thumb up... smile.....
Sure you say it may not be perfect, but there was something about your performance (although subtle) that was very heartfelt to me. As if you were expressing the song like it was your own words. Way more genuine and warmer than the other ASL version by tiffanyevita - hers seems "without feeling", as if she didn't really care for the song.
Your video was just gorgeous the way you put it! A plus! And you're beautiful urself, u fit the song when u expressed it! :)
I love this!!!! I'm not the perfect signer but love watching.. it's like art to me..
fantastic job, really clear signing and i love you emotions :) xx
You are totally awesome i truly enjoyin watchin u sigh to the songs that i like :) keep up the wonderful work ur doing
Wow this was great! was really heartfelt and love this song! great Job LOVED IT
First time hearing this song. You made it that much more amazing! Thank you!
Wow, just Wow.
Truely Beautiful
i love this song and i love the interpretation. it was great. good job!!!
Briana, that was beautiful. You are still learning sign? Well, you are doing a pretty good job. I'm an OH-CODA and professional interpreter 12 years now, I can tell you this, music IS your own interpretation of the song. If you feel that you didn't want to change the original words too much (because this song really is about the words) then that is your interpretation of it. No right or wrong. This isn't an assignment for you, just something you enjoyed so who cares what anyone says! :D
Great job! Like many have said, very clear and easy and excellent emotion. Its a helpful video for those wanting to learn more sign language... like me! :)
@quillatequilla I appreciate the constructive criticism :) The reason why I said was "nothing but the best for you two" is because I listened to the song and realized her words can be interpreted both ways and I liked the way it looked when I said "for you two" better. I'm not sure if her original meaning was "for you two" or "for you too" because I don't have her original lyrics, so I went with the one I thought was better. Hope that makes sense :)
yes I have to agree growing up with deaf parents I love your interpretation of this song and Im very hard to please nice job no great!! job!
You did a wonderful job. I love your facial expressions :)
@RaechelleEgan Yes, instead of me signing the word best I chose to sign "SUCCESS" which is what Adele meant in her song. in ASL "SUCCESS" also means "work out". SO I am signing "I hope things work out for you".
ik sign language and i can understand mostly everything even without the music on!! your good!
Love your version! It's pretty good! :)
Greetz from Austria
yes i like this one of your ASL super good doin' action..really like it..
This was an amazing interpretation!
@badabingbambino I agree with you!!! Unfortunately the general population just doesn't know much about the Deaf world and their culture. Many people only learn about that if they take classes on it like I did. Hopefully with the increasing interest in ASL more people will be knowledgeable about Deaf culture in the future. Thanks for your comment!
I love 1:18... going into I love you sign... nice work.
Just beautiful, great job.
This is not ASL, but a GREAT transliteration/Signed English example! Awesome!
this is a very well done video, awesome, love it
You Did A Very Good Job!!.... I'm Learning ASL & I Love How You Signed This Song! Its Going To Help Me With Practicing!!! =D
soooo pretty i love your signing!
@ldel427 yes, or "success" "works out".She says "I wish nothing but the best for you" I signed it with the word "success" meaning "I wish everything works out for you"
this is really good ^.^ I'm using this to practice for my assignment in ASL & it's very helpful.
This was awesome and I LOVE your hair.
I learnt how sign this song by watching your video!!! :)
I could follow your hand motions, I love this video a lot
You did a wonderful job at this video I love it!!
i love this song and i love you signing it and i love your hair :x
wow good signing and i love your hair
LOVE LOVE LOVE this! Think you could do set fire to the rain also by Adele?! :) :)
Can you PLEASE do ALL the Adele songs? I love signing even though I am NOT deaf I follow your signing and just LOVE! Would you my doing another sing Pink's- Perfect? Just asking AGAIN LOVE your signing. I've seen a lot of other video's on this song, but I just keep coming back to this version of it it. I love it that much. I LOVE Adele myself.
You make it look so cool. I could be doing this in a club. :)
i loved it and im totally using this for my sign language project
~wish me luck :)
That was beautiful :)
Beautiful
so fluent and beautiful :)
So Beautiful!!!! You are wonderful!!! Subscribed!!! xo xo
Wow I love it your amazing
Hi! This is amazingly beautiful and I love how your signs fit with the beat of the song. I was just wondering, is there any way you could give a written interpretation of the signs you used? I'd love to use this interpretation (with your permission), but it's hard for me to see clearly sometimes. It'd really help me out! But anyway, it was really awesome :)
@SuperLilwaynefan12 Thank you for the constructive criticism! But, I would like to take this opportunity to explain choice of signs. I signed "success" because it is also used in ASL to mean "work out" or "things go well". Adele says "I wish you the best" so I signed "SUCCESS" as in "I hope things work out for you". Then for your other comment, she is actually saying "sometimes it hurts instead" not "it hurts to say". So, I signed "sometimes it hurts" (over the heart). Hope that makes sense! :)
@frenchkitty thank you very much! So glad the emotion came through the way I wanted it to :)
I loved it, well done
@Kryptoniankousin Hi, I'm really right handed but my camera switched everything around and so it looks like I'm left handed haha... Anywho, YES you should use your left hand as your dominant hand when signing because it should be whichever is more natural to you. Don't worry about using your left hand because I know lots of left handed signers who are great!!
I love this art work...
i love your signing..
It's one person's interpretation. It focuses a lot on the words as opposed to the sentiment. There were a few signs that I could not understand in relation to the song. I would characterize this as more like signed English as opposed to ASL. But, kudos to the person who tried. Nice effort.
I love it! Just one suggestion.. When signing "old friend", maybe you should use the sign for past? The sign you used is for age. Don't get me wrong, I love it, I really do. Just a silly suggestion. Keep up the good work! (:
Powerful.
OMG that was so amazing I love it, thanksss very much!!!!!
@LeslieEatsFire I used the sign "successful" because I felt that was the true meaning behind what she was saying and makes more sense in ASL. "I wish nothing but the best for you two" I signed it as " I HOPE NOTHING BUT SUCCESS FOR YOU-TWO". Hope that makes sense :)
@pookymuffin101 I appreciate your perspective! I agree with you, it is very important people understand that ASL is its own language! However, there is no point in changing around every sentence in the song. A Deaf woman said, "I don't like it when people interpret songs and make everything different. I am an educated woman and I know what words mean. When someone changes the song, I am not able to make my own interpretation". So, everyone has their own opinions! :)
