Doujinshi is one of those really strange cases of a japanese word thats completely normal in japan but overseas has the same meaning but almost exclusively refers to the lewd ones making it weird to talk about
Hentai as well. Hentai means pervert and not what Westerners have turned the word into. It's weird because when English words enter Japanese slang, it becomes softer. I'm pretty sure "Fetish" in Japanese is just a trait you like.
Yeah. It just means self published works. It could be music, games, manga, whatever. Overseas though it refers to hentai manga
I think I'm a rare one, I actually came to know the original meaning of doujinshi first. I was always confused whenever I saw people's reaction whenever doujinshi was a topic.

It's not a strange case at all, every word whether its foreign or not has tendency to change meaning or being lost in translation. That's how language works.
For example the word 'daddy' has changed a lot.

Doujinshi in direct translation is "self publish" well english community always bastardizing meaning to their own meaning, for example hentai in direct translation is pervert, but english community use it as R18+ work
It's not like Japan hasn't completely butchered the meanings of a very large number of English loanwords. This stuff goes both ways.
