Welcome to my youtube channel Power of Knowledge Academy. In This video you will learn about Different methods of Cartilage restoration with the help of 3d animation.
Here is the brief description about Cartilage Restoration.
Articular Cartilage is a smooth and shiny tissue that covers the end surfaces of our bones in joints. Its main job is to prevent friction during bone movement and absorb shocks. Thanks to cartilage, two bones can slide smoothly during movement without causing damage. However, if cartilage in a joint is damaged for any reason, the bones start to rub against each other, reducing movement and causing severe pain.
You may know that cartilage tissue doesn't have blood vessels inside it, making it challenging to repair quickly. Therefore, damaged cartilage is often healed through surgical procedures, a process known as Cartilage Restoration.
    *Causes of Cartilage Damage:*
Accidents, falls, sports injuries, and infections are common reasons for cartilage damage.
    *Diagnosis:*
It's challenging to detect cartilage damage because it doesn't have blood vessels or nerves that cause pain or swelling. Physical examination may reveal pain and swelling if the cartilage damage exposes the bone. Other techniques, such as MRI, arthroscopy, or X-rays, are used to detect cartilage damage.
    *Treatment:*
Once cartilage damage is diagnosed, various methods can be used to restore it, such as:
    1. *Microfracture:* Creating holes in the bone beneath damaged cartilage to stimulate blood supply and facilitate healing.
    2. *Drilling:* Using a surgical drill to create holes in the bone beneath damaged cartilage, though this method is less commonly recommended due to potential tissue damage.
    3. *Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation (ACI):* Taking a sample of healthy cartilage, culturing it in a lab, and implanting it into the damaged area.
    4. *Osteochondral Autograft Transplantation (OAT):* Transplanting healthy cartilage from a non-weight-bearing area to the damaged site.
    5. *Osteochondral Allograft Transplantation:* Using cartilage from a deceased donor to patch larger damaged areas.
    *Risks and Complications:*
As with any surgery, cartilage restoration procedures carry risks such as graft detachment, allergic reactions, infection, or rejection. Other orthopedic surgery risks include postoperative bleeding, joint stiffness, nerve or vessel injury, or deep vein thrombosis.
It's essential to discuss these risks with your surgeon and carefully consider the potential benefits before undergoing cartilage restoration surgery.
