Once the pitlane opened for grid formation, Michael was the first driver out, and he did a couple of laps going back through the pits before going to the grid. Apparently he tried the different tyre options during those laps through the pitlane. Michael Schumacher crashed chassis 179 badly in Hungary's warm up session. The car was too badly damaged to be repaired in time for the race, hence they reverted to the old car with approximate setup changes. Oliver Gavin driving the safety car in F1 was probably a better (and probably quicker) experience than if he had done the Adelaide race in the Pacific in 95 😂
The decision to start behind safety car played into the hands of those who started on intermediates. Nowadays it wouldn't be possible with a safety car start forcing everyone to take full wets. But not to take anything away from Michael, he was much better also than others who made the same tyre call.
By the time the race started (behind the safety car) at 14h00, intermediates were already the right tyre. at 13h55, the wet tyre would have been better, and at 13h44 dry tyres were the thing to be on.
I've been playing Exhaust Heat/Exhaust Heat II (based on the 1991 and 1992 season) and am very familiar with the Bus Stop now. It tends to trip up the AI cars in the second game, which helps as the AI is idiotically fast in straight line and with a car that doesn't have the best upgrades you can't catch the leader usually (either Mansell, Patrese, Senna, or Berger.)
The news at the start justifies my decision to not follow formula 1 anymore. I record that 1997 Belgium grand prix because I was a huge Jordan fan and spa was my favourite circuit in f1. I still have it but I never converted my vhs to dvd so I can't watch it.
I almost wonder if we should bring back two tire manufacturers. Would be nice to see a little bit of different strategy to mix feild up somemore. Other than "getting the regulations right"
It wouldnt work with no refuelling. Pirelli have stated that they can make tires in all types of performance vs wear combinations, making softs last the whole race and such, which then becomes a pretty moot point.
@@AidanMillward So basically, there is no point to have two manufacturers because the FIA rules would cause the tires to preform the same anyways. Never thought of it that way! The engine freeze was the worst decision ever imho. No more taking risks to get a few more HP to make up for bad aero. Thank god this is the last year at least
@@mattt525 The other problem with Tire Wars is you eventually get into safety issues. You had Bridgestone/Michelin at Indy 2005 and there were several terrible wrecks resulting from the Goodyear/Hoosier war in NASCAR. A funny aside on the Firestone/Goodyear Tire War in CART was every track looked like someone poured buckets and buckets of marbles off the racing line at each track because both companies were going softer and softer. When Firestone was the sole supplier in 2000, 60% of the marbles were gone because they could make the tires harder and more reliable.
@@AidanMillward They were definitely both at fault, however you don't slow down on the racing line especially not in the rain so I tend to blame DC a bit more..

Why do we need three races in the US when at the time of this event details almost no one there was interested in F1? Losing Spa even for one or two years is unacceptable when so much newer dross is foisted upon long term fans who couldn't care less about those circuits.
Do not mention the war... You know, Spa is very *very* close to the area of the Battle of the Bulge. Malmedy is an infamous name in US Army history. I think it was SS troops of Kampfgruppe Peiper (commanded by Jochaim Peiper) who killed a group of US Army POWs in what has become known as "The Malmedy Massacre." My German spells might very well be off, and I hedged on the units because I don't remember and can't be arsed to look out up right now so please simply forgive errors instead of attacking.
Spa, silverstone, São Paulo, Monza should be without doubt on the calendar every year. Yet we have gimmick tracks like vegas on calendar, even though the qualy and racing was good the interest in the event is poor compared to a track like spa!!
This whole GOAT conversation gets my goat. Hamilton has won more races and more poles than anyone yes, he’s also been in more races per season than anyone else. Same with the Schumacher vs Prost or Senna argument. Then the Senna vs Clark or Stewart argument. They were generational and should all be remembered as greats individually rather than of all time. If Mr Millward could do a video on that it might prove interesting.
I like the idea of rotation but not like this. Even as an American we don't need 3 races. Keep COTA every year and let Miami and Vegas alternate the second US race.
Everyone says how great Spa is but never actually discuss the races? When was the last great non wet Spa race? Can we actually watch the races and stop thinking about nostalgia and herd mentality

The news at the start justifies my decision to not follow formula 1 anymore. I record that 1997 Belgium grand prix because I was a huge Jordan fan and spa was my favourite circuit in f1. I still have it but I never converted my vhs to dvd so I can't watch it.
If Schumacher won in Spa 1998 he would have Won 4 in a Row but he hit the Back of Coulthard.
Wars cost money. And they’re not going to join in if they’re just going to be told to build what the fia tells them to build.
@@ArnechkPirelli will get their behinds kicked imo if there was a tire war
@@mattt525 The other problem with Tire Wars is you eventually get into safety issues. You had Bridgestone/Michelin at Indy 2005 and there were several terrible wrecks resulting from the Goodyear/Hoosier war in NASCAR.
A funny aside on the Firestone/Goodyear Tire War in CART was every track looked like someone poured buckets and buckets of marbles off the racing line at each track because both companies were going softer and softer. When Firestone was the sole supplier in 2000, 60% of the marbles were gone because they could make the tires harder and more reliable.
Just a side note that we all know of, if Coulthard didn't slow down in the rain in 98 Schumi would have had 7 Spa wins..
@@jk_46 Schumacher didn’t help the situation by pulling back into the spray. They were both at fault.
@@AidanMillward They were definitely both at fault, however you don't slow down on the racing line especially not in the rain so I tend to blame DC a bit more..
Historic Spa, a real drivers circuit on rotation yet f1 has 3 american pantomimes. F1 truly is dead
Chaos 😅
12:03 Yeah go tell 'em!
Wait..
is this DC crash in to Micheal ?
Had to replay from 2:46 a few times, because it sounded like you said Ferrari had a brilliant pit stop strategy and that just doesn't sound like Ferrari.
They didn't have any Italian influence in strategy at the time.
This F1 content is to home cooking, what LawVS is to junk good...
Why do we need three races in the US when at the time of this event details almost no one there was interested in F1?
Losing Spa even for one or two years is unacceptable when so much newer dross is foisted upon long term fans who couldn't care less about those circuits.
15:30 - Drivers today just divebomb and force each other wide, no REAL racing like back in the 90s, smh... 😔
2:39 lmao
Bordel = Big mess
Bordel de merde ~ holy shi*, shit hit the fan
Do not mention the war...
You know, Spa is very *very* close to the area of the Battle of the Bulge. Malmedy is an infamous name in US Army history. I think it was SS troops of Kampfgruppe Peiper (commanded by Jochaim Peiper) who killed a group of US Army POWs in what has become known as "The Malmedy Massacre." My German spells might very well be off, and I hedged on the units because I don't remember and can't be arsed to look out up right now so please simply forgive errors instead of attacking.
Rotation = make tickets more expensive.
Spa, silverstone, São Paulo, Monza should be without doubt on the calendar every year. Yet we have gimmick tracks like vegas on calendar, even though the qualy and racing was good the interest in the event is poor compared to a track like spa!!
Can Monaco go on rotation? No? Oh Ok, I guess we'll just put the entertaining races on the chopping block instead
Think I already did, many years ago.
F1 is a dead husk.
Fire up the quattro
MBS needs to go asap. He's singlehandedly ruining F1
I like the idea of rotation but not like this. Even as an American we don't need 3 races. Keep COTA every year and let Miami and Vegas alternate the second US race.
Having this track makes F1 games so much more difficult. For me the hardest track to ride fast.
Bathurst has entered the chat.
Irvine was a rubbish driver. He basically doomed the Jaguar project from day one because he had no idea how to set up or develop a car.
"Do not mention the war"
Reicht, sorry!
3:50 My boy Diniz getting shafted from the standings 😢
Get rid of all.middle eastern circuits.
Everyone says how great Spa is but never actually discuss the races? When was the last great non wet Spa race? Can we actually watch the races and stop thinking about nostalgia and herd mentality
