Wow Arland died a hero. What a selfless human being. He sacrificed his own life. Even when he was given the opportunity to save himself multiple times, he chose to pass on the rope. I can't imagine how much he suffered. May he rest peacefully because ppl like him are rare nowadays. I bet his family was so proud of his heroic actions that day.

He was known as “the mystery hero” for months until they could conclusively determine which passenger he was. We know his name well today, and that name continues to inspire us. We should all strive to be that selfless-to be like The Man Who Passed The Rope.

I will never forget. My second daughter was born before the terrible Mexico Earthquake in 1985. They showed pictures of the pancaked maternity wing of the hospital, and I was heartsick. man, 10 minutes would be so long to be in water that cold. When I was younger I jumped in after a kid into water that was 4C (39.2F for Americans) one time, and at the time I was a certified lifeguard and a competitive swimmer, had a rescue line and flotation device, and I was only in the water like 30 second...but I'll never forget how tired the shock of that cold and trying to move through that cold made me. "Just" 10 minutes must have felt like an eternity. It makes you really appreciate Arland passing on being pulled out cause not only was he risking his life, but he would have been acutely aware of that cause every second he spent in that water would have felt like hell.

The worst I’ve ever experienced was water that was just above 40F. I did swimming in high school, and during Christmas break we would get a week off. During most of that time the schools heater was shut off. The pools heater was accidentally flipped off as well. They turned them both back on the morning of our practice, but it takes a long time for a large pool to heat up. Our coach saw us turn blue within a couple laps and let us go, I’ll never forget how painful it was. I can’t imagine having to stay in such frigid waters for long

@@deepapatricia He didn't follow checklist procedure for inclement weather. It's literally a flick of the switch for 4-8m -- a deicing module that melts the ice off the small poles that stick out of the airplane with holes on the tips so that air enters the tubes, and rates the air-speed of the aircraft. Without this information the plane has no idea how fast it's going and so the plane isn't sure if it's going too fast or too slow and how much energy to give the plane. In this case, failure to de-ice the tubes meant the plane had assumed it may be going too fast and restricted the aircraft from getting the speed to properly take off (70% of takeoff speed in this case) A costly error for something so simple.

People always using hindsight to give advice or some other bs. The pilot was qualified with some errors from time to time. Most people focus on the negative and not the positive. There was a reason that pilot was selected to pilot the aircraft. You listen to one narrator and make your choice as to whether the pilot was good or not based off that. I think they were all heroes. Whether you get paid to do it or not, what you do is honourable and tremendously valuable to society. God bless you all.

The lady that literally had a plane land on her head and survived?! Omg that is just nuts and sheer luck that she survived!

I remember being in high school when this was on the news. I didn't, at that time, truly appreciate the heroism of the rescuers like I do now. Truly amazing stuff. Lenny and Roger jumping in selflessly. The helicopter pilot and medic doing literal movie stunt actions. And Arland Williams Jr., either recognizing he couldn't get out, or believing he could hang on, handing the rope to others. It hurts my soul to realize that while others were being saved, he was pulled under by the wreckage. I hope his family is comforted by his incredible bravery.
