Clare Fischer may not be a household name, but to the cognoscenti it rings loud and true. He began his career in L.A. in the late '50s as a keyboardist, composer, bandleader and arranger and has worked with everyone from Dizzy Gillespie to Prince and Celine Dion.
In this freewheeling session at the 2005 Red Bull Music Academy, he and his son Brent explain all about arranging and reveal why you should never listen to producers or record labels.

I am a Prince fan, and one real cool thing about the collaboration between Claire and Prince is that Prince - despite being a control freak who wrote and arranged all his music - gave freedom to Claire to interact with him. Many popular songs that have orchestra usually put them in the background. With Prince, Claire had his space. A good example is the song ´Crystal Ball´. Parade album too.

Here in Brazil, I knew a pianist that played almost EXACTLY like Clare Fischer. His name was Ricardo Albano, he was married with the singer Doris Monteiro. He was a genius also. And the interesting thing, he had the same temper, the same look, the same smug, and he only listened to Clare Fischer, Bill Evans, and a few more. He was amazing. I am a jazz pianist, and I could learn many things with him, and by listening and transcribing Clare Fischer chord progressions and solos.

Thank you, Brent, for posting this. With his magnificently unique playing, compositions, and arranging, he gave us some of the most beautiful music on the planet. I also have the '¡Ritmo!' CD, and it's marvelous! It was a privilege to have the opportunity to chat with Clare several times over the years. He was rich in his experience, not only of music, but of life. I'll always be in awe of him.

I've always wanted to know who was the arranger for all those remarkable string arrangements for Debarge Album and El Debarge solo projects. The songs Love me in a Special Way & Stay With Me are the most beautiful song and the strings are outstanding on both.

Brent, your father is my idol. Once, I met him in a show in Rio and I told him how I admired his recording of Cherokee using a church organ. And he told his wife: Hey dear, this guy is one of the fews who bought that record! Is that true? Is it a so unknow record? Congratulations and thank you for keeping Clare alive.

Yes, you're missing quite a lot haha
He talks about Prince all throughout the interview, I don't know what you're talking about
If you can't find it by skimming through the video, try looking at the transcript instead
