Mathreyi is the younger wife. She was neice of Sage Gargi. Maitreyi wanted to become a disciple under Sage Yāgnavalkya. But he would not take a female disciple. Only way she could stay in the ashram is to get married to him. He was already married to Kathyayini n hemce she became his second wife. But you have explanined the essence very well. This is not a single verse , this is a simple overview of upanishad Shruti called “brihadaranyaka upanishad” . It is available in Sanskrit language.
