I love the fact that Frida, in a radio interview with the BBC (I think) in December 2021 shortly after "Voyage" released praised Agnetha for being "such a great storyteller." She proves it not only here, but in all three songs that feature her on lead vocal on the album, ICBTW along with "Don't Shut Me Down" and "Keep an Eye on Dan." All three songs feature a woman rueing her missed opportunities in a romance, and thinking about what could have been / what still could be in three musically very different songs. One other thing worth mentioning, small as it may be - Agnetha's diction in all of her vocals is second to none. Even though her voice has darkened in her later years, she has matured as a singer in ways we didn't always see in ABBA's 70s-80s heyday.

I still recall that question, when Zoe asked her 'how do people want you to be remembered'.The answer she gave was so hearfelt it instantly brought me tears.
I gotta admit that at my first listen to this i hadn't thought too much of it.,considering it a little dull ,stripped or smth so I passed it by.Finally within less than two days later on it had already grown on me.I woke up one dawn with Agnetha's fragile voice haunting my mind..'''you 're not the man you should have been...' and that was like a shot in the heart.It made me think,'what a shame i overpassed this ,how could i?!'Today i adore and cherish EVERY single song on this sacred album.It's their final precious and very moving offering to us and i cherish this with respect ,deep love and gratitude.

In an interview for the BBC Frida complimented Agnetha for her storytelling. And this song is a perfect example. There are so many elements which have made this my favourite song on the album. Her intense singing and Frida's harmony vocals perfectly match each other.
this third voice has helped make this group, in my opinion, the most spectacular in the whole world. sharing the vocals, taking turns doing their own lead vocals and then bjorn's lead vocals , and then even benny's {on 'suzy hang around'} have added originality to all their songs and created different sounds unlike most other groups who only have one lead singer.

You can hear the emotion in Agnetha voice talking about leaving her little boy with his dad . As a mum she can relate to the lyrics and emotions of divorce and how her life and children were affected by the separation from her and bjorn also when they were on tour that must have been so hard as she said she yearned to be with her children. Other strong vocals on previous abba albums are disullion hasta manana and her early solo work when she wrote about the pain of splitting with her boyfriend

The structure of the song is very much country and in style and narrative it reminds me of a song like She Believes In Me. There, music is the binding ingredient. And the progression is through the words after "While she lays...sleeping, dreaming, waiting, crying." Here, Bjorn uses the dog to illustrate all the emotions that are to come. She's sleeping, she jumps down, licks her fingers, happy to see her, but she gets scared when he shows his temper. At the end, the dog is hopeful, reflecting maybe a renewed hope for all. Dogs do have a sense of things. I know from experience. When my ex and I would fight while sitting in the living room and my voice would rise, the dog would always jump up on my chair and start licking my face. Never hers. I think for Tammy it's a relief to see her there. And dogs are a great judge of character.

agreed jack. i abbasolutely love them too. from the first time they walked onto the stage in brighton in 1974 til now, i have loved them. their songs have taken me through my life and they have added so much to it. it would have been a paler existence without them for me too. it's with such delight that i have read all of the comments about them since the release of their 'voyage' album. it has astounded me to read the love around the world in all the different languages. i knew i wasn't the only long term abba fan, but reading the worlds comments has filled me with joy. to know that we are listening to new abba music at this stage has uplifted my soul. incredible singers, phenomenal music. this is one of my favourites too {although 'i still have faith in you' and 'ode to freedom' are the masterpieces in my opinion}. blessings, peace and love to all.
It's deals with a tragic story but at the same time it carries a hopeful,optimistic message,'It's never too late for changing'.Seems as if Abba didn't want to leave the listener totally sad and devasastated. 'There's a shimmer of hope' in the end.We've seen it again in some past Abba songs such as 'One man one woman',or even 'Chiquitita' and in a way on "The way old friends do'.But here with ICBTW the story is really tough and far more serious and raw.The analysis of the backing track and of the orchestration you did, while using the dolby atmos system, surfaced up lots of great stuff that was less audible.I loved it even more since then.
The power of the strings at the "You can't believe it..." along with Agnetha's haunting vocals is one of my favourite moments of the album. What an amazing track, and my many thanks for having that shimmer of hope to try again with this video of the Voyage series. It's a beautiful thing that this song has the most streams among the ones from the album's B-side on UA-cam.

Yes, I agree. I haven't stopped playing Voyage since its release. It's hard to believe how beautiful it is. Within the first few listens I referred to it as 'ravishing' because every composition, the arrangements, the vocals and the engineering is incredibly warm and sensual. It's ABBA's best album.
@@grantc61 I think that this is actually related to what Bjorn had said a year and a half ago in an interview where he kinda stated that Voyage was the missing part to Abba right after "The Visitors' album.Now i know he was right.Seems to be like a 'mature' epilogue.,now that things have settled down.
This voyage album has so many varieties of songs and that's whats make this a masterpiece. For instance, I can be that woman is more of a country type, when you danced with me inspired by Irish music, no doubt about it is the fastest track of the album, keep an eye on Dan is an unique song with a little bit of SOS, Greatest comeback ever. Dear bb, thanks for doing this amazing explorations of songs by one of the biggest bands in the world. We want more and more music from ABBA and I hope they'll continue it. 🙂
as in the lyrics of 'no doubt about it' this isn't where it ends, this isn't where it ends, this isn't where it ends. i hope it wasn't just talking about there being one more track on the album, and that indeed there is more abba music in the future. i'd given up hoping beyond hope that this new album would ever be formed, and i will spend the rest of this lifetime, and beyond perhaps, being forever grateful. but i sure hope this isn't where it ends too ...
It's such a perfect vehicle for Agnetha's voice. I do think it's a nice change that there's maybe a slight edge of hope in this one, a big difference from her leads with ABBA, which were mostly heart rendering and hopeless. She CAN be that woman now. I also have to admit that I wasn't keen on the dog part the first time I listened, but I get it more now. It's all part of a domestic scene. It gives me the image of an older couple who have gotten used to disappointing each other.

This song from the album is without doubt a masterpiece 🙌 Terrific story telling from a written perspective & delivered by a very very talented leading lady that over the years has produced songs that come from the heart & soul! it appears so much through their music that time & experiences in life have led to the final album of music produced by them to be very melancholy as well as upbeat which has always been the ABBA forte. First of all, your last sentences with that already iconic picture of ABBA in the snow, almost made me cry. This song has grown on me through time. I played it just on Friday and I realised that I like it more today than when it was released. The lyrics make me visualize perfectly what's happening in that living-room, like in a movie. But the best thing in the song is Agnetha's vocals. It's pure emotion coming from her heart. When she sings "there's a shimmer of hope in your eyes", she gives me literally goosebumps. And Frida in the chorus helps a lot with the emotional atmosphere.
Another superb analysis. This time of a very serious song. I don't live too far from Nashville and am no country expert but Tammy Wynette would have really identified with this song IMO.
A beautifully delicate analysis - thanks Bobby's B. I must be honest that it's an album track that I've listened to only twice and haven't returned to, as its subject matter is upsetting - but of course it's a very real, serious issue that I congratulate ABBA on tackling head on. It does remind of "One Man One Woman" but for me also of the almost-panicky and fragile vocal delivery of Agnetha on "The Last Time" from her "I Stand Alone" album.
It took a while for ICBTW to sink in, for me. I didn't like some of the lyrics and I still think there's a degree of ambiguity that's unpleasant - but that must be what's intended. But the melody and Agnetha's performance drew me in and it's now my favourite on the album. It's a masterpiece. Keep listening to it and its beauty will capture you.
Agnetha is the queen of storytelling ❤ Her delivery within this song is heart wrenching and with her voice you hear the vulnerability so raw with emotion that resonates 😢 It has the country style with a many aspects of a dark ballad ! Frida has complimented the moving harmonisation that bring the spice ❤ The lyrics are deep and darker than the normal ABBA recordings but it shows that ABBA is so transcended and with The Visitors it follows the journey that so many people experience with life experiences as wee age good times and bad times and our journey of Hope 😉 Storytelling at its most geniuses
Thanks for meaning the "Man" song, pal. I've been knowing this song from 1991 when I recorded it from radio, but I've never find out neither title nor singer. I guessed a long time it was ABBA, but when I found all ABBA songs and didn't find it among them, I was afraid I will never know more about this song... The "I love you, I do' in your video hinted me as I am not English speaker and these words were the only ones I did understand in the song. Well, now is the nice day for me... :-)
A very detailed and evocative insight into a song that is very deep and disturbing and quite unnerving in many ways.At the point in this video where you analyse the moment and atmosphere in that room there is another element I feel ,at least to me ,the song is so raw and engaging and most of all atmospheric, that I feel and sense the reality to the point that I am actually in that room with the two of them and the dog being emotionally drawn in with them and feeling the pain and hopelessness of the situation .The anxiety and depression are evident in them and transfers into me.This as you have correctly said is a song in synergy with The Winner Takes It All,this song is another masterpiece that dissolves those 40 years away.
I always wanted to hear the history of “keep an eye on Dan”, because I love the retro disco strings and 70s synthesizer sound which when updated to the 2020s really has a cool updated sound to the group
another fantastic video review and exploration, full of fine details that only an architect of music research like you can achieve I will be honest with what I say, think and feel "I can be that woman" for my taste is among the three most "weak or weak" songs from the album "Voyage" and even so I consider it a very good song (7pts) and what I value most is the fascinating vocal and emotional delivery of Agnetha, I even think it surpasses the song itself Now that I look at it in the sequence of time, with ABBA having officially announced in April 2018 that they have recorded two new songs, that day in January 2019 with ABBA secretly coming back and recording these two new songs, Agnetha and Frida's emotional state must have been incredible, and it shows in their performances that surpass the songs, which must have motivated Benny and Björn even more to continue working, because they saw in Agnetha and Frida two women with all the energy and voice to give and that is seen in the rest of the songs on the Voyage album, which for me is only below the best pop from Arrival and The Album, and is the best legacy of the extraordinary history of ABBA.

Boy, I haven't listened to "Shapes" for a long, long time. Back then I remember thinking, "This is an ABBA album!" At the time it seemed like it was the closest we would ever get anymore.

I hear a lot of Roxette in this song, specifically their song “Listen to Your Heart”. Roxette owes a lot to ABBA, as it is hard to listen to “Fading Like a Flower” and not see how they used “SOS” as a template. Likewise when this song gets to “…and then you wake up” and “…you say you’ve had it”, it’s impossible not to hear “…listen to your heart…when it’s calling for you…”
I always felt there was a justified relation to their fellow Swedes.Both Per and Marie had worked with Frida.Per on Frida's solo album SGO and Marie had even dueted with her and were also friends before she died.As for LTYH i can also hear this but also hear far back behind it.Meaning that in LTYH l also distinguish some kind of 'lented elements' and 'instrumentational inspiration' from Heart's 1985 great comeback hit single "What about love?'I t's a kind of a circle i guess .btw I love all these 3 songs.

You're actually spot on, AB is something like the Swedish copyright. It stands for "Aktiebolag", limited company/corporation. In a 1978 interview on the German TV show "Am laufenden Band", ABBA is actually asked about the Swedish equivalent for it, and Benny replies "AB". A funny moment, because the host incidentally notes that it is "the same as ABBA".

It's deals with a tragic story but at the same time it carries a hopeful,optimistic message,'It's never too late for changing'.Seems as if Abba didn't want to leave the listener totally sad and devasastated. 'There's a shimmer of hope' in the end.We've seen it again in some past Abba songs such as 'One man one woman',or even 'Chiquitita' and in a way on "The way old friends do'.But here with ICBTW the story is really tough and far more serious and raw.The analysis of the backing track and of the orchestration you did, while using the dolby atmos system, surfaced up lots of great stuff that was less audible.I loved it even more since then.
The power of the strings at the "You can't believe it..." along with Agnetha's haunting vocals is one of my favourite moments of the album.
What an amazing track, and my many thanks for having that shimmer of hope to try again with this video of the Voyage series.
It's a beautiful thing that this song has the most streams among the ones from the album's B-side on UA-cam.

Yes, I agree. I haven't stopped playing Voyage since its release. It's hard to believe how beautiful it is. Within the first few listens I referred to it as 'ravishing' because every composition, the arrangements, the vocals and the engineering is incredibly warm and sensual. It's ABBA's best album.
@@grantc61 I think that this is actually related to what Bjorn had said a year and a half ago in an interview where he kinda stated that Voyage was the missing part to Abba right after "The Visitors' album.Now i know he was right.Seems to be like a 'mature' epilogue.,now that things have settled down.
This voyage album has so many varieties of songs and that's whats make this a masterpiece. as in the lyrics of 'no doubt about it' this isn't where it ends, this isn't where it ends, this isn't where it ends. i hope it wasn't just talking about there being one more track on the album, and that indeed there is more abba music in the future. i'd given up hoping beyond hope that this new album would ever be formed, and i will spend the rest of this lifetime, and beyond perhaps, being forever grateful. but i sure hope this isn't where it ends too ...
It's such a perfect vehicle for Agnetha's voice. I do think it's a nice change that there's maybe a slight edge of hope in this one, a big difference from her leads with ABBA, which were mostly heart rendering and hopeless. She CAN be that woman now.
I also have to admit that I wasn't keen on the dog part the first time I listened, but I get it more now. It's all part of a domestic scene. It gives me the image of an older couple who have gotten used to disappointing each other.

First of all, your last sentences with that already iconic picture of ABBA in the snow, almost made me cry.
This song has grown on me through time. I played it just on Friday and I realised that I like it more today than when it was released.
The lyrics make me visualize perfectly what's happening in that living-room, like in a movie.
But the best thing in the song is Agnetha's vocals. It's pure emotion coming from her heart. When she sings "there's a shimmer of hope in your eyes", she gives me literally goosebumps.
And Frida in the chorus helps a lot with the emotional atmosphere.
Another superb analysis. This time of a very serious song. I don't live too far from Nashville and am no country expert but Tammy Wynette would have really identified with this song IMO.
A beautifully delicate analysis - thanks Bobby's B. I must be honest that it's an album track that I've listened to only twice and haven't returned to, as its subject matter is upsetting - but of course it's a very real, serious issue that I congratulate ABBA on tackling head on. It does remind of "One Man One Woman" but for me also of the almost-panicky and fragile vocal delivery of Agnetha on "The Last Time" from her "I Stand Alone" album.
It took a while for ICBTW to sink in, for me. I didn't like some of the lyrics and I still think there's a degree of ambiguity that's unpleasant - but that must be what's intended.
But the melody and Agnetha's performance drew me in and it's now my favourite on the album. It's a masterpiece. Keep listening to it and its beauty will capture you.

Agnetha is the queen of storytelling ❤ Her delivery within this song is heart wrenching and with her voice you hear the vulnerability so raw with emotion that resonates 😢 It has the country style with a many aspects of a dark ballad ! Frida has complimented the moving harmonisation that bring the spice ❤
The lyrics are deep and darker than the normal ABBA recordings but it shows that ABBA is so transcended and with The Visitors it follows the journey that so many people experience with life experiences as wee age good times and bad times and our journey of Hope 😉 Storytelling at its most geniuses
Thanks for meaning the "Man" song, pal. I've been knowing this song from 1991 when I recorded it from radio, but I've never find out neither title nor singer. I guessed a long time it was ABBA, but when I found all ABBA songs and didn't find it among them, I was afraid I will never know more about this song... The "I love you, I do' in your video hinted me as I am not English speaker and these words were the only ones I did understand in the song. Well, now is the nice day for me... :-)

A very detailed and evocative insight into a song that is very deep and disturbing and quite unnerving in many ways.At the point in this video where you analyse the moment and atmosphere in that room there is another element I feel ,at least to me ,the song is so raw and engaging and most of all atmospheric, that I feel and sense the reality to the point that I am actually in that room with the two of them and the dog being emotionally drawn in with them and feeling the pain and hopelessness of the situation .The anxiety and depression are evident in them and transfers into me.This as you have correctly said is a song in synergy with The Winner Takes It All,this song is another masterpiece that dissolves those 40 years away.
I always wanted to hear the history of “keep an eye on Dan”, because I love the retro disco strings and 70s synthesizer sound which when updated to the 2020s really has a cool updated sound to the group

I will be honest with what I say, think and feel
"I can be that woman" for my taste is among the three most "weak or weak" songs from the album "Voyage"
and even so I consider it a very good song (7pts)
and what I value most is the fascinating vocal and emotional delivery of Agnetha,
I even think it surpasses the song itself
Now that I look at it in the sequence of time, with ABBA having officially announced in April 2018 that they have recorded two new songs,
that day in January 2019 with ABBA secretly coming back and recording these two new songs,
Agnetha and Frida's emotional state must have been incredible, and it shows in their performances that surpass the songs,
which must have motivated Benny and Björn even more to continue working, because they saw in Agnetha and Frida two women with all the energy and voice to give
and that is seen in the rest of the songs on the Voyage album, which for me is only below the best pop from Arrival and The Album, and is the best legacy of the extraordinary history of ABBA.
Since you mentioned them in your video,both "I stand alone' and "A' are top Agnetha albums for me with her voice being greatly delivered and very expressive.As for your mentioning to "I was a flower'!God!What a song!What a divine performance!Could have easily been a perfect Abba song out of maybe 'The Album'.A poetic symphony.
Boy, I haven't listened to "Shapes" for a long, long time. Back then I remember thinking, "This is an ABBA album!" At the time it seemed like it was the closest we would ever get anymore.

Thanks for sharing this analysis of one of the best ABBA’s songs. When I heard it I knew that it would be great. The history which it tells shocks and at the same time sends a beautiful message.
I hear a lot of Roxette in this song, specifically their song “Listen to Your Heart”. Roxette owes a lot to ABBA, as it is hard to listen to “Fading Like a Flower” and not see how they used “SOS” as a template. Likewise when this song gets to “…and then you wake up” and “…you say you’ve had it”, it’s impossible not to hear “…listen to your heart…when it’s calling for you…”
I always felt there was a justified relation to their fellow Swedes.Both Per and Marie had worked with Frida.Per on Frida's solo album SGO and Marie had even dueted with her and were also friends before she died.As for LTYH i can also hear this but also hear far back behind it.Meaning that in LTYH l also distinguish some kind of 'lented elements' and 'instrumentational inspiration' from Heart's 1985 great comeback hit single "What about love?'I t's a kind of a circle i guess .btw I love all these 3 songs.

You're actually spot on, AB is something like the Swedish copyright. It stands for "Aktiebolag", limited company/corporation. In a 1978 interview on the German TV show "Am laufenden Band", ABBA is actually asked about the Swedish equivalent for it, and Benny replies "AB". A funny moment, because the host incidentally notes that it is "the same as ABBA".
