The final sample he chooses for his final song is called 'when I die' and knowing the context of donuts the lyrics to that track are pretty heartbreaking
What you explained at 30:40 is actually how I learned how to make beats. I spent like a whole summer break finding the original samples for beats from Donuts, Madvillainy, and Operation Doomsday and remaking the beats to learn the sample chopping process. It was really fun and shaped the way I make beats, I'd recommend it to anybody starting out in music production.
Also, the record crackles that you like are a byproduct of Dilla sampling directly off of his vinyl records. They're not added in later, you're actually hearing the dust and scratches from Dilla's personal record collection amplified through all of the processing and mixing he did to the samples.
I heard when Kanye started making beats he would practice/learn by remaking beats. Seems like the best way to learn on your own.
This is how I learned how to get better at chopping samples too when i was first starting out. Even to this day if I find a sample that was used in a beat I've heard I ALWAYS remake it out of principal, you can't improve your beatmaking skills if you don't push yourself outside of your comfort zone and try something different every once in a while
thats what i do too its so fun lowkey
@@Arnell717that’s how I learned
Dont cry. One of the greatest beats of all time. Thank you Jay Dee, J Dilla 😢🙏
The greatest beat of all time !!!
When those chops come in, it gets me
We just became best friends!
I started making beats about 5 years ago, just for fun. My good friend said he had a project for me that I might like, it was Donuts by J. Dilla. I spent the next few months obsessed with everything he’s ever made. But this is still my all time favorite, the craftsmanship in these chops and how much soul he gets out of crappy samples is insane.
I will miss him forever. R.I.P. Dilla 💜💐
I wouldnt call the samples crappy they’re pretty good tracks.
I love donuts but my favorite instrumental hip hop album of all time is Lullabies For The Broken Brain by Quelle Chris. It’s so incredibly underrated
crappy??
crappy??
Idk if my comment didn’t post cause I didn’t see it after refreshing, but on Stop he makes “is dat real” sound like “is death real”
Amazing sample work
Same for light works, the actual singer doesn’t say “light up the spliff” he just makes it sound like it does
Tracklib is such a great channel. The way they illustrate the samples is so easy to get and they pull some really great songs to sample. Their Kendrick Lamar breakdowns are cool too
This is probably my most listened to album I can’t wait for Bob to sit with it and let it grow on him
@@TheKobe5s L
I can’t express enough how cool it is that you give so much to this genre and you are constantly training your brain. You never dismiss anything. I think we can all apply that to different areas in life.
There is NOTHING wrong with preferring “Endtroducing”
They’re both instrumental TITANS
One thing people don't realize is that Dillia did actually quantize his beats pretty often, but one trick he had was using different quantization settings for different elements
so for example the snare and the hi-hats might be snapped to different note divisions
Now you definitely need to listen to The Infamous by Mobb Deep
Side note: just want to say I love how Dilla and Madlib give so much love to Bollywood
me being from india, i hear a couple of records that i listened to when i was little because of my parents and its so crazy 4 me now listening to both of them
@@ishaan_005 bro same I’m from India as well
@@Oskar0424 thats fire!!! you live here?
super cool that you checked out endtroducing, absolutely love that record. midnight in a perfect world has never left my brain since i heard it the first time lol. endtroducing is a part of a genre called plunderphonics where the music is either mostly or completely made up of samples. the best example i can think of is since i left you by the avalanches which is an absolutely gorgeous dance record made up of thousands of samples. it still somehow manages to be a complete, cohesive work and is a treat to listen to. shit feels like you're on a tropical island i love it.
How fitting that the video about Dilla is itself a collage of samples from other different videos
Never seen this channel before, I am just here to say thank you for checking out the best most loved and highly regarded producer of all time.
Even though this album has none of his voice on it, he’s speaking so clearly. Amazing.
You gotta listen to 4:44 by Jay Z and then watch the Sample Breakdown to The Story of O.J., it's insane
Thisss!!! I really hope he sees this somehow!
No ID gets nowhere near the flowers he deserves. that sample flip is unreal, like that shouldn't be possible for a human to do.
The reason Dilla is a genius is because you have to understand the types of chops he was making was unheard of for his era, this was before Pro Tools. Nowadays it's relatively easy to not only hear what you wanna sample, but also have the wave forms laid out for you to pick and choose what you want to take out accordingly. Dilla was regularly squeezing out every last bit of potential out of a sample simply by ear, without the help of modern technology...unreal
Also this was touched on in the video you were watching but Dilla would also take vocal samples and switch the meanings to fit whatever song (This is where Kanye got it from), like in "Lightworks" where he takes the lyrics "light up the skies" and turns it into "light up the spliffs"...My favorite example of this is on "Stop" where he turns Jadakiss saying "it's that real" into a question, "is death real?" something that is kinda sad given the context of this album but brilliant at the same time
RIP J DILLA
I don't believe you HAVE to know the samples to enjoy the music, but it can give deeper meaning and a fuller appreciation. I have a playlist on UA-cam of songs that I found through hip hop samples. Songs that I now love, that I would have never heard without hip hop. Of all genres and time periods. For someone who is always looking for new music to explore, samples is like a cheat code. lol
15:28 the original lyrics are "day and night" and he made it sound like "Dilla"
Vol.1: Flick Your Tongue Against Your Teeth and Describe the Present
PS.: thx for the likes y'all... appreciating all the comments about MTI and the collective love for it. I'd also like to see him react to that, Uneven Compromise, etc. first but i just liked the idea of straight up throwing him into the cold, cold waters that is Bedwetter. No warning.
Thank You, One Love.
Should do Oblivion Acess and MTI too
So fucking true
it would be cool for him to react to that but let him do mista thug isolation first because starting lum’s discog with flick your tongue is not a good idea
I’m tryna make it out the hood so on my UA-cam channel i do food reviews while I’m super high ‼️😌
YESSS! But he should react to some other Lil Ugly Mane's albums before that
Great stuff.
If you go deeper into the Tribe Called Quest discography you’ll see Dilla pop up and change everything. If you get into Ghostface Killer you might hear some of these beats.
this video is so wholesome to me
On Dilla Says Go he literally sampled himself saying Go (he was a rapper too lol)
If you're not familiar with The Alchemist's work he's in my opinion one of the best sampling producers of all time, the beats he picks are absolutely insane
I know you like Madlib, so you gotta check out some of his instrumental work. I’d recommend Shades of Blue if you want something similar to Endtroducing. He has some pretty long funk, jazzy instrumentals on there. It’s his best produced album too imo
Said yeah the same time you did when it went from the original to Dillas haha 36:37. Your genuine interest in this made it a great reaction video
Need more people like you
30:12 Dont cry, for those of you wondering
Pop, I appreciate the fact that you are really indulging in the true essence of HipHop. Keep doing your thing man!!!
niceee i was waiting for this video
oh hell yeah, i might be more excited about this than i was for Donuts initially!
The thing with finding out exactly where they sampled is that you can actually just superimpose the wave forms of the sample with the original track on any digital audio workstation to see where they match exactly so that’s probably what they do sometimes, you don’t even really need to do it by ear, even though that’s also, somewhat possible
Oh snap we gotta get a sample breakdown series or something for the artists you've done already. I would also like to see a reaction to Lailas Wisdom by Rapsody!!
awesome video awesome album! great producer!
-Pete Rock is similar.... he says he plays music in his house while cleaning and he'll hear something and make a beat.
-Some producers already have the sounds they want in their head. It's just a matter of finding the records to produce those sounds.
-A lot of times you can make a beat and while it is looping you come up with something else to layer on top of it. When I have made beats, I will have the drums looping and then add a piece and hum something in my head while it is playing, then add another piece and so on.
-If you put each sound on different tracks, you can play with the tracks seperately as you see fit.
-The siren sample is Dilla's signature....lol
24:43 this is why Dilla is bonkers. Cause who's sampling that???
Madlib!
You should do more of these. Rap documentaries as well. There are some amazing channels out there that'll teach you a lot about albums and artists. Keep up the great work!
isaac hayes did a version of walk on by, the song sampled on walkinonit, on his album hot buttered soul. it's absolutely beautiful. same album that his song by the time i get to phoenix is on, which injury reserve named their album after.
I love when artists use samples to enhance a story, like when the theme of a sample relates to whatever someone’s rapping about. But you wouldn’t know unless you know the lyrics of the sample song. Idk if I explained that clearly. Kanye does this alot

Here’s a playlist to Mass Appeal’s show Rhythm Roulette. Each episode they get a famous producer to grab 3 random vinyls and create a song by sampling all 3 of them. Episodes are only about 10 minutes long and super fun to watch, Figure I’d share during this Dilla week!
Its still NOvember and you still have a chance to squeeze in NOthing Was The Same and this hunger strike has caused me to eat NO food and I can’t believe im still NOt unconscious
Its because of people like Bob that i have hope that one day Hip Hop will be as celebrated as all other types of music. Names like 2Pac, Dilla, Nas, Dr. Dre need to be mentioned along side Michael Jasckon, Fredie Mercury, Paul McCarney, Bob Dylan when talking about the best of all time. Support Bob. Much Love.
so glad u gave donuts a listen, truly one of the greatest albums ive ever listened to. Glad u enjoyed it thank u for the content!
Love the idea of you getting into more sample breakdowns from time to time. Some of them are so intricate and I'm amazed people even figure them out.
Your donuts reaction video is my personal favorite, I've been watching since the Tyler, the Creator reactions. I think its your best reaction video/album review in a while I feel. Much appreciated!
i would love to see a little brother reaction!
the listening in particular. that was my introduction to 9th wonder and it’s fantastic all the way through.
This is phenomenal
Bob, you gotta watch the 9th Wonder Rhythm Roulette video, the concept is that he has 3 records to listen and samples from to make a 1 beat but he made 3 great beats with all three of them.
I hope one day that you'll listen to Nujabes
Just heard you say you've been listening to Endtroducing for a few months now, I had no idea you listened to that. You should add some of the rap albums that you've listened to but not recorded, because I'm sure you'll get people asking you to do that album. I also sometimes forget what you have and have not listened to. Just an idea. Keep up the great videos!
I loved this. Hope to see more videos like this one. ♥️
I love sample breakdowns!
Hey Bob, if you didn't pick up on where you might have heard of 9th Wonder before, he's done an obscene amount of producing over more than 20 years, but you likely know him for producing Kendrick's DUCKWORTH. off of DAMN. check out the sample breakdown of that one too, it's also crazy. Dilla was a huge influence on him, and it really shows. People say a lot that Madlib is the only one that can stand next to Dilla, but to me the person who keeps Dilla's spirit and style alive the most is 9th. Definitely check out his episode of Rhythm Roulette, it's an insane display of his talent (and very funny).
By the way, if anyone's looking for some great instrumental hip hop, 9th Wonder does these giant beat tapes (the longest is over 2 hours) called "ZION" every once in a while. They don't have a lot of meaning behind them like Donuts does, but they're great for background music for working, I listen to them a lot while doing homework.
Bob you need to check out Boldy James, such a unique artist
i love 9th wonder man DUCKWORTH. was fantastic
A lot of the songs of donuts ended up being beats that rappers made songs to, would love to see a reaction to some of those especially one for ghost/whip me with a strap
Dang, would’ve been cool to see you react to Endtroducing. Did you already know about the album prior to your hip hop journey?
He said in the video he's been listening to entroducing for months it was probably just recommended outside of reacting
@@Myiic he was talking about how he was listening to it in this video and enjoys it more then donuts as of now.
Never realised that "Dilla Sayd Go" samples the same song as "Hate It or Love It" by 50Cent and The Game
YES!
There was a time where Musicians and Beat makers didn’t see eye to eye in regards to the composition of art. J Dilla being a drummer himself said “Let me show you what I can do with this MPC”. The rest is history
Check out the duckworth one too!
I was hoping he'd recognize 9th wonder from the don't cry clip.
You should listen how they used J dilla’s Stop on Usher’s song Throwback (you even get a jadakiss verse)
i think you need to do this with the money store as a monday upload
Facts. A sample breakdown for Peggy would be dope too.
Tracklib popularized the waveform sample breakdowns, and they have a ton of great videos (would strongly recommend their DOOM stuff)
I’ve been listening to hip hop my whole life but grew up way more into the rapping than the production. The last 5 years I’ve been gettin more into the science of different techniques of production. even tho I feel like I have a decent understanding (as fan, not beatmaker) on how to chop samples and pitch things up or down to make it work in the track…… I have no idea on how Dilla’s mind works.
not a rap album but you should check Bjork’s Post. One of the best pop albums of all time
👆👆👆
frrrrr
Also Eddie Kendricks (from the People sample) is who Kendrick Lamar is named after
Every Person is Born with their God 🙏 Given Talent. ✌️
I know this album I'm about to recommend doesn't have really much to do with Jay Dee, knowing you love dissecting lyrics open from every track you hear, I think Purple Moonlight Pages by R.A.P. Ferreira is an interesting and challenging to dissect album, even for you.
I would reallllyy love to see you reaction to that album. I think you would like it.
I wonder when the day will come that we'll see Bob react to Lightworks by MF DOOM
That will be awesome
It will probably take him a while to get to BORN LIKE THIS, but he'll get there
@@fernandoreyes680he hasn’t even done operation doomsday yet
@@INCRYPTIDFORM that album, VV, King Geedorah and Dangerdoom are essential. hope he gets to them someday lol
god this album is mindblowing
I can't wait till you get to E. 1999 Eternal(and Art of War if you choose) that album will blow you away!
You should see what he did with Ain’t Got Time by Roy Ayers for the song Little Brother by Black Star. It literally sounds like a simple loop…..but NOPE. 🔥🔥🔥
You gotta listen to some nujabes him and dilla are often used in the same breath. One of the best producers of all time. They were also born on the same day lol.
Good Dilla video commentary by Vox I think you will appreciate.
How J Dilla humanized his MPC3000 - ua-cam.com/video/SENzTt3ftiU/v-deo.html
Mixing the background instrumental out of a song you just wanna use the vocal for is easier said then done. More often then not we just look for passages where there isn’t too much going on, but Dilla is a beast Bc he would never let that stop him If there was shit going on in the back he either used that in a creative way or found a way to mix it out. My dads been a sound mixer and audio engineer for the last like 40 years, and despite me being a rapper and producer for the better half of a decade and having a good understanding of making beats and sampling, when it comes to the mixing side I get lost past the basics
Hey bob you should react to daft punk i think they changed the whole world of electronic music and its amazing you should listen to “random access memories” they have amazing artists on the album
Hey Bob this might be a little bit of a weird request because it’s not rap but I would love to see you reacting to Ants from up there by black country new road. It is an amazing post rock album that came out this year. I think you would enjoy it :)
He has listened to that album and enjoys it!
Now that you have heard donuts you should listen to Endtroducing...
I think the craziest flip is two can win because I fkin hate how the original sample song sounds but I love dillas version 😭
The moaning in Time sounds like a guitar, almost. I wonder if that was on purpose.
9th Wonder is amazing. Please review Little Brother’s album The Minstrel Show. It’s hip hop royalty and he produces that album
Thats Hip Hop’s most iconic siren
Dilla, Madlib, and DOOM - three of the only producers brave enough to try to sample Zappa (even though Dilla just used a spoken-word piece)
Honestly there’s no point in trying to micro chop a sample anymore, you will never get a result as good as Don’t Cry
The Dionne Warwick sample is my favorite
You should add “Can’t Take Me Home - P!nk” to your list to react to it’s a really good RnB album and it would be cool to hear your thoughts
Yes. DJ Shadow did Entroducing…
You probably prefer that because it’s fuller songs, not just short 1 min sample songs
You should go back and look at some of these beat breakdown videos for other albums you’ve done, Madvillainy and Mm..FOOD have great beat breakdown videos on UA-cam
talking about instrumentals/turntablism and so on, there another that you should listen one day, Wave Twisters, by DJ QBert. That one is unbelieveble
bob, i would sincerely appreciate it if you looked at nujabes
Gotta listen to ghost face killah on one for ghost
Please react to Knxwledge-anthology
Can u react to jcole 4 your eyez only album
If you like Gobstopper you should listen to ABRACADABRA by Jay Electronica, amazing track
It's funny how I didn't like it at first. Those tend to be the albums I love most - ones I hate at first that take over my head and change it.
I just realized that he’s never listened to Anderson Paak can y’all help me get him into Paak
Bro react to knxwledge-anthology. it’s the best producer album in hip hop it’s better than donuts and better than anything you heard from madlib
Hey Bob! I hope you one day listen and react to 4.44 by Jay-Z.
Lyrically and musically Exceptional!
Can you react to nicki minaj pink friday or to her queen album
Hey, just saying that you should really listen to the other Michael Jackson albums, I recommend Dangerous, History, and Off The Wall!
