"One likes to believe in the freedom of music, but glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity." Still true to this day about the music industry.
What are the odds that 2 guys who were friends in middle school would end up being the best guitarist and bassist in rock? And then be lucky enough to find Neil Peart? We're so lucky to live in the same spot in the whole of time.
And they're still always great about it. They're still great friends, it's awesome. One of the few bands i can think of where they actually liked one another
La Villa Strangiato is a must. From the mind of guitarist Alex Lifeson, inspired by a nightmare. No lyrics, but the guitar sings a split personality and Neil brings all of his percussion instruments.
Your ability to comunicate: comprehensive and on point. . Trying to verbally describe the music of Rush: speechless . ...for everything else, there's MasterCard.
I know John Bonham usually gets the nod as the greatest rock drummer of all time, but I’ve played drums for 40 years and although Bonham is one of my absolute favorites, I feel strongly that Neil is the greatest ever. And Rush is just ridiculous in general. I can’t think of a more gifted group of musicians from a players standpoint as well as from a composers standpoint. And to top it off, three of the best human beings you’re ever going to come across!
Neil is in a higher class than Bonham. Simply put, Zep was more popular and that's why Bonham gets the nod. John was a master drummer but Neil was a master drummer, percussionist, songwriter, intellectual and philosopher.
While Bonham deserves his spot in the top 3 rock drummers all time I always felt Neil gets the nod at number 1 because he could play anything Bonham could do and did much more beyond that. Basically the only man on earth the Buddy Rich estate felt could fill his shoes was Peart. So he's not only the best rock drummer but an incredible jazz drummer as well.
Pro drummer here - you said it perfectly - John is a good drummer - used everything he had, but he is nowhere near as technical as Neil - Rush took pride in flawless performances that were many times better than the studio releases - Zeppelin played better in the studio than their live performances - where everyone was usually hammered before, during, & after shows. The difference between John & Neil mainly is that John wanted to be a famous rock star - Neil wanted to be the best drummer he possibly could - it shows in the music & body of work - and like you stated, Geddy, Alex & Neil are 3 of the kindest, respectful people you could meet - a real challenge in that industry & era.
Seeing Rush live is like no other experience! So sad that we lost Neil Peart one of the best drummers. The professor lives on all you Gotta do is press play🥰
Neil Peart said the idea behind the genre changes in this song that you heard was to simulate different radio stations; radio being the theme of the song. Thought that was pretty brilliant.
They are all 3 extremely gifted musicians who care about their fans, their musical exploration and creativity, and about giving their fans a terrific performance... tour after tour!! RIP to the Professor-Neil Peart🥁
Dream Theater is a prog/ heavy band that has talent... heavily inspired by Rush. They will tour in 2022. Rush was formed in the late 60's, but had their first album out in 1973 in Canada... '74 for the world... This concert was from 1984... Rush did use a lot of electronics at that point on stage. Rush's final tour was in 2015, celebrating 40 yrs... Rush drummer Neil Peart retired and soon passed away in early 2020 😪 R.I.P.
I was fortunate enough to see both the Moving Pictures 40th anniversary tour (twice on back-to-back nights) and the Images and Words 25th anniversary tour. My favourite album by each band played in their entirety!
I went to Elementary and High School with Geddy Lee's nephew. I'm 51 year's old and i finally saw Rush in concert about 6 or 7 years ago. Incredible experience. I wish i would have saw them way more than just 1 time but i'm thankful for the experience. RIP Neil Peart
I would consider these three guys to be in the top five, of their respective instruments, with Peart being the best drummer ever, and one of the greatest lyricist.
How can just three guys do it they are all mastery musicians and the time signatures that they change in and out of our phenomenal they went from Rock to heavy metal to reggae seamlessly and they do it all the time
Thanks for this reaction. This was the first Rush concert I attended in 1984, but in Houston Texas. Now you understand why we Rush fans are so emphatic about our appreciation for 3 talented musicians making such amazing sounds. I understood every part of your reaction even if you believe that you were not able to communicate it effectively. The transitions of this song is to represent the different radio stations you would hear when you change the dial while driving your car. The theme of the lyrics begins with the joy of listening to the radio as it becomes a part of your day, but then turns to the corruption of the music industry that sacrifices artistic integrity for the sake of the almighty dollar for the Record Label seeking a Grammy after being on the Top 40 charts. The sound you were referring to was a MIDI sequence. This song was the beginning of Rush using MIDI sequences and incorporating it into their live performances. This trend reached it's peak on their Power Windows album where the MIDI parts were somewhat overbearing compared to the organic performances of the actual trio. Anyway, great reaction as usual. I look forward to your reaction to La Villa Strangiato (the official video). After that, Neil Peart drum solo in Frankfurt is a must. Thanks again!!
Spirit Of The Radio..... “Begin your day with a friendly voice, a companion unobtrusive. Plays that song that’s so elusive and the magic music makes your morning move.”.... These guys are genius, what a poetic way to say your driving to wherever in the morning listening to songs on the radio. Rush is 100% in my top 10 all time favorite bands ❤️
When I got to see them preform this live with my whole family was one of the best moments of my life. Rush means so much to so many different people, my whole family and I connected deeply through Rush and music in general.
Rush retired in 2015, the drummer/lyricist Neil Peart died in 2020 and the other two said they could not go on without him, they were together for over 40 years.
Great reaction! Rock concerts have tremendous energy for sure. I was actually at this concert in Toronto in I believe 1983 or 1984. My first concert and it blew my mind. Part of the energy you see is from the fact that this was the opening song to the show and also Toronto is Rush's hometown, so they are quite charged up. I saw them many more times after that and they always put on an amazing show. Rush was a special band, no other like it!
Drummer Neil Peart passed away a couple of years ago. He and Led Zeppelin's John Bonham were considered maybe the 2 best drummers in Rock History. Bonham passed away, in the late 70s, I think. Both were unbelievable drummers.
It's important for understanding Rush to listen to the words. So often there is deep meaning that will touch you. When you get the chance, go back and listen to the lyrics of their other songs. And that "round" sound was a xylophone or glockenspiel that Neil was playing.
I haven't been to a concert in twelve years but I imagine the crowds are still the same. All the concerts I have been to have been so energetic and crazy and fun. There is nothing like seeing a band live and enjoying the concert with like minded people. Strangers coming together and having a great time. Van, you will have such a good time no matter who you go see.
Saw Rush for the first time on their Signal world tour in Montreal in the 80. Was there for their last tour too some 35 years later . YES you must see a great show for your first. Touring is complicated these days but I recommend , if they ever come near you, the kawai metal japanese band'Babymetal ' . They are the ultimate fell good concert experience. Check them out. You can do a reaction to any of their live videos and I think you'll agree.
I love the LFR family!!! I was fortunate to attend " ONE" Rush concert and it was the most incredible experience!!! If...if..if you can find video footage of Neil's drum solo from the Roll the Bones tour, please watch on your own time...share if you like 👍 .
Definitely worth diving into the lyrics with Rush songs.... “invisible airwaves crackle with life, bright antenna bristle with the energy” ..... it is a super fancy way of saying I’m jamming’ to songs on the radio.
The sound that you hear that you think is synth is Neil playing the xylophone. 😊 I'll echo the must is La Villa Strangiato. Or Natural Science. Enjoy. Thanks for the reaction!
The variety transitions is to make the point that with the dial of the radio u can choose rock, reggae, blues or whatever sound you want so it's a parody of station changing with the rhythm changes of this song
Best live performance hands down was prince at the super bowl. Downpours rain and he still struts the stage in pretty much heels, doesnt even slip a little?!?!?! That is legendary.
Rush was great! My brother cut his teeth learning guitar on them and Led Zeppelin being taught at 14 by Eric McClure who was 16 at the time, he was an excellent teacher at 16! The guy is so good he jammed with Les Paul! You can look him up!
If you haven't yet, you should watch the official video of la villa strangiato (played live on a closed stage, not a dub) to see Peart's insane cymbal work
Geddy Lee is the bass player and lead singer. He has foot pedals that he can play keyboard and bass parts with. These guys are very talented and rehearsed musicians.
The transitions in this song is the sound effect of turning the radio dial to a different station. THAT'S why there are so many different sounds. Back in the day, we had to manually turn the dial to get to the next station. Hence, the different sounds. You should react to Red Barchetta. They actually make the sound of a car in the middle of the song and remember, there are only 3 members in this great group.
That sound you thought was coming from a synth is actually Neil using a percussive electronic trigger pad while playing the Xylophone over top the beat
Blessed to have seen them a few years ago before Neil’s passing. Such an experience to see live even after their “prime.” The Trees is still a song I haven’t seen anyone react to - I just love that dang song!
Neil was a master percussionist, and a world class drummer, as well as the chief lyricist for the band. Teddy played bass, keyboard, and pedals, while singing lead. Alex is a world class guitarist, and the comedian of the group. I heard "Fly By Night" when it released and never looked back. Rush is one of the best bands ever.
This was in the 1980s ( check out those snazzy clothes ), as those guys haven’t looked that young for a long time, AND, sadly, Neil Peirt, the drummer, has recently passed away. A great band for sure.
In this video in particular, while Geddy is not playing bass but rather clapping hands and leading the audience, he is actually playing keyboards with his feet during that time.
If you will notice Getty Lee is the bass player and keyboard and Alex Lifeson Is the guitar player both have foot pedals that they transition in synthesizers sounds that they make it sound so flawless
That synth part you were talking about... Geddy (the bass player/lead singer/keyboardist) played it. With his FEET! If you watch closely you will see him playing with his feet!
Metallica was the craziest concert I’ve ever been too.you have to get out there and go to a concert, you will love it! The bass goes right through your chest❤️ have you done close to the heart? That’s my favorite Rush song, and yes Neil was amazing!
They worked and toured for decades. They were that good. Geddy Lee, the singer, is the son of a Nazi war camp survivor who emigrated to Canada. His mom didn’t want him to be a musician. It worked out ok for him.
9:44 - You should click the suggested video and react to Xanadu from Exit Stage Left 😎. One of Rush’s best live performances, it’s mesmerising how only 3 people play that song
Rush owns. Neil Peart (RIP) on drums wrote the songs with Alex Lifeson of Trailer Park Boys on lead guitar and Geddy Lee on vocals, bass and whatever other instrument was required (he played a lot with his feet). Canadian heroes along with The Tragically Hip and their late singer Gord Downey, who passed away in 2017 of cancer. If you want to see a great, live concert, check out The Tragically Hip's last concert that aired on CBC on August 20, 2016 from their hometown of Kingston, Ontario. Gord passed away on October 17 of that year. It was a concert attended by all the Canadian celebrities including the very loose-lipped right wing hockey icon Don "Grapes" Cherry and the guy who legalized cannabis and saved my life because of it, Prime Minister, Mr. Justin.
Rush would have been an excellent choice for a first rock concert. I was fortunate to see them on 3 separate tours and almost went when they were last in LA. I'm kicking myself because it turned out to be the last show ever. I would suggest who you should check out live but I haven't been to a concert myself for quite some time. Not too many have the longevity like Rush had. I'm sure your online family will have some suggestions though. 🤘 Peace.✌
I saw every show in Michigan from 1984 grace under pressure, through their final tour. I even saw them twice on the final tour (in Detroit and near Washington DC). Best band ever!!
Not sure if you are aware, but the reason they sound so great live is that they literally did every recording in one take. If one of them bricked it, they started over. By the time they hit the stage it was just memory reflex.
they didn't do strangiato in one take, and i'd be surprised if they did all the other records in one take. the earliest ones i would believe when they had a more raw sound, but recording songs in several takes is standard procedure for anyone unless you're going for a real raw 'live in studio' sound, but with how polished especially the middle/later rush albums are, i'd be truly surprised if they decided to go for a one take method, even though i'm sure they could do it. they certainly didn't record their parts at the same time
Geddy Lee, the singer, plays the bass guitar and keyboards. While playing the bass and singing, he sometimes uses foot pedals for the keys / synthesizer. Otherwise he walks over and plays the keys with the bass hanging off his shoulder. Neil Peart, the drummer, was actually found to have 2 extra arms that he brings out during concerts. JK Van 😂 It just seems like he has 4 arms. Alex Leifson is just a master guitarist
Isn’t that brilliant? So much energy, just like you said! In the 80’s, Rush was definitely one of the top bands to see in concert! They were competing with bands like The Police, U2, Yes, Genesis and Van Halen for the top spot as Best Live Band, but they always brought the big show and the jaw-dropping musicianship!
at 9:35, Guitarist have an assortment of foot pedals at their feet that can change the sounds of the guitar, so I'm sure he's using them to change the sound around. ty

Certainly one of the better...there are other greats as well
@@reality1958 Yes there are! Tom Petty and Mike Campbell were together since they were teens too. We've had some great music in my lifetime.

Tony Kenning from Def Leppard deserves at least a nod in this conversation, I feel.
Neil is in a higher class than Bonham. Simply put, Zep was more popular and that's why Bonham gets the nod.

They were ALWAYS a joy to see in concert. The three of them would be up on stage and filling the venue with amazing sounds.
Oh yes……..here we go! 🤘😎❤️🔥 RUSH. These 3 gave us 40 years of tours and music. RIP professor Neil - the best to ever do it.

1980
Can’t even come close to either of them, ever. World changing stuff
They do it, they are RUSH. That's means prepper to the unexpected.
Great reaction.
Rush was Amazing in concert.. I was able to see them 3x in the 80's..
5:18 You can see. that PLINK sound is being played by Neil on a Xylophone attached to his drum kit, yes he is more of a beast than you even thought!
but there's also a synthesizer track doubling what Neil is playing that is triggered by the band
I know, just 3 guys, right?! Such an epic band. And Neil Pert was a genius. He does that circular drumming thing that blows me away.
i saw them in Vancouver in the 80's and their music is still just as relevant today. fantastic show.
It's important for understanding Rush to listen to the words. So often there is deep meaning that will touch you. When you get the chance, go back and listen to the lyrics of their other songs. And that "round" sound was a xylophone or glockenspiel that Neil was playing.
I saw Rush live at the Palladium, New York City, on May 11, 1980, Permanent Waves tour, amazing!
R.I.P. NEIL PERTH! THE GOAT OF ALL DRUMMERS! You have great ears, you will NEVER hear a better one .EVER.
I haven't been to a concert in twelve years but I imagine the crowds are still the same. All the concerts I have been to have been so energetic and crazy and fun. best band ever
been listening to them since 1978, saw them 32 times, met them once
loved this era
they will never be matched
This is the year I first saw them in Concert. A life changing experience and let me know life was gonna be a ride
Big RUSH fan here! Haven’t seen that particular performance by them. That was so very 80’s! Awesome reaction! Thank you! Made my day!
RIP Neil Peart. The music industry won’t be the same without you.
Saw Rush for the first time on their Signal world tour in Montreal in the 80. Was there for their last tour too some 35 years later . YES you must see a great show for your first. "Don't act like you all didn't just hear that!" 🤣🤘High praise 👏
Yeah, Rush….no words needed for this performance…
I love the LFR family!!! I was fortunate to attend " ONE" Rush concert and it was the most incredible experience!!! If...if..if you can find video footage of Neil's drum solo from the Roll the Bones tour, please watch on your own time...share if you like 👍 .
Definitely worth diving into the lyrics with Rush songs.... “invisible airwaves crackle with life, bright antenna bristle with the energy” ..... it is a super fancy way of saying I’m jamming’ to songs on the radio.
Glad you enjoying Rush in concert ! If you haven't, check out the R30 intro, you gonna love it !!!
Three band members make this magic. 🔥🎵❤️
RUSH - XANADU live from Montreal is what needs to be done next!
The sound that you hear that you think is synth is Neil playing the xylophone. 😊 I'll echo the must is La Villa Strangiato. Or Natural Science. Enjoy. Thanks for the reaction!
I thought he was talking about the sample that's comes in right before the chorus.
Thanks for doing another RUSH!
That sound you were hearing was foot pedal synthesizers. Geddy plays them while playing bass and singing. Insane talent.
The variety transitions is to make the point that with the dial of the radio u can choose rock, reggae, blues or whatever sound you want so it's a parody of station changing with the rhythm changes of this song
They had a lot of ENERGY back then !!! The 80's was a great time to be a teenager !!! Long live Neil Peart !!! 💙
Best live performance hands down was prince at the super bowl. Downpours rain and he still struts the stage in pretty much heels, doesnt even slip a little?!?!?! That is legendary.

Geddy Lee is the bass player and lead singer. He has foot pedals that he can play keyboard and bass parts with. These guys are very talented and rehearsed musicians.
Masters of their craft
Bro I am thankful that I got to see Rush before Neil passed away. It was an amazing experience.
RUSH was one of my Top 3 Go-To's in the 70s and 80s. Had all of their records and saw them Live, just twice.
Van, you've got to check out Rush in Rio- YYZ Live! The crowd is lit!
Listening to the crowd sing the instrumentals is sick!!!
The Professor at his peak....glorious!
Amazing what three musicians can do.
That ‘clink, clink, clink…’ sound was coming from the drummer, Neil Peart (rest In peace 😢). He was amazing to see live, as was Alex and Geddy! 🤘🏼

This song came out a couple years before Purple Rain, I never heard a connection before but who knows?, Prince may have been a Rush fan.😂👍🤘🏻🔥🎧

KISS in 1975 would be a must see concert.
Working Man,,,live in Cleveland,,,,the BEST Rush on UA-cam !!!!!! 💥💥💥💥💥💥💥👍😎
🤘 Peace.✌
Privileged to say Rush was my first rock concert in ‘78 (Farewell to Kings) and I saw their last show in LA.
I saw every show in Michigan from 1984 grace under pressure, through their final tour. I even saw them twice on the final tour (in Detroit and near Washington DC). Best band ever!!
Loved it! The song and his reactions. Nasty. Love it.
Best 3 person band ever period
Brother you're speaking the language of rush we all understand it
RIP Neal we all miss you
at 9:35, Guitarist have an assortment of foot pedals at their feet that can change the sounds of the guitar, so I'm sure he's using them to change the sound around. ty
More Rush, please.
