Some quick tips to those who are new to this game: 1. I know this reviewer played the game in third person mode, but I prefer to play this game in first person mode as it felt more immersive to me. Not only did the environments feel more real when playing, but I also felt like it was more engaging to find clues this way, as I had to scan the environment from top to bottom. This game is more of a "Sherlock Holmes Simulator™️", and I think this camera view best suits that style as the camera doesn't bumble around on other objects or terrain. Of course this is all preference, but I found the game much more immersive that way. Simply press "B" to change your view at any time. Playing this with a good sound system or pair of earphones is also ideal as I found the sound design, mainly in the more quiet points of the game, to be really well executed. 2. I recommend playing this game with as little knowledge about each case as possible. I know that may be hard considering some cases are ripped right from the books, but half of them are also brand new. The reason I say this is obviously because of spoilers, but also because the main selling point of this game is that you can actually get the wrong murderer by botching deductions. As a result, you're free to decide your own conclusions which makes every choice that much more important. I really wish the game didn't tell you when you've made every deduction during the case since that pretty much tells you when you're done the case, but it helps to go in as blind as possible for the best results regardless. 3. Following on from point 2. At the end of each case, you can see if your deductions were correct. It's optional and is done by holding down a button. I think it's fine to do this, but the game will also allow you to go back and change your conclusion until you get the right one. My advice: don't do this. Replay the case from the beginning or simply move on to the next one. I know that sounds ridiculous, but doing so will allow you to look at each clue and deduction more carefully and actually think critically about how you proceed. Each case usually has at least 3 or 4 endings, so it can also be fun to intentionally see the wrong ones. Without a guide, it took me quite a long time to actually 100% this game since it requires getting all the endings. By itself, however, the game is only around 8-10 hours long so doing this will allow you squeeze a lot more out of this gem. 4. The mini games, while kind of annoying and pace breaking (in fact they are really the only thing I dislike about this game), are all able to be skipped. Don't skip the events like the lock picking mini game or the chemical reaction stuff as I think they are fairly good puzzles, but I wouldn't blame people for skipping things like the arm wrestling and harpooning mini games. I know this post is long winded, but this is honestly one of my favorite games of all time and it sadly hasn't been topped by the developers since. This is a really special game, especially if you like the old style Sherlock Holmes books so please don't sleep on this. Seriously, this game is a gem and needs to be the standard for this kind of detective style game.
So the first case where you have to put the sailboat together using the smoking pipe and tobacco leaf. It doesn’t matter if you skip it? Also are there more puzzles like that? I hated it tbh
@@hisword8531 You're able to skip them with no consequences. The only reason to not skip them was for the achievement in the other versions. There's another one in the next case and I believe one or two more at most. I personally never found those difficult either, but I suppose that's a matter of opinion.
I can't thank you enough for your comments coming from a point of someone considering to purchase this title. It just sounds genuine and honest and it's an actual gem of a review as it is. Super descriptive and generous from you. Thank you good sir. I need more people like you on the internet. Kudos to you! Looking forward to seeing more from you if possible. Hope I'm not sounding too creepy but your comment deserves to be praised. Thank you
@@michalkubiszewski1931 I appreciate the kind words! I love recommending some of my favorite games to people, and I enjoy it even more when people give them a chance! If you do end up giving it a go then I hope you love it as much as I do. I personally find this game to be oddly therapeutic, as aside from a couple quick time events, you're free to take as much time as you need to really think about where to go next and what deductions to make. During these moments I found taking in the scenery and enjoying the games atmosphere to be oddly comforting for the most part.
@@hosenpfefferjones4524 I can tell we have similar approach to playing video games in the way that we appreciate games that give us an immense experience almost tickling our artistic souls and our sensitivity to quirks and tiny details that matter. I loved this game the first time I played it. The setting and overall mood/tone of the game is great for a rainy day or nightly gaming. I'll definitely pick it up soon
I've never played any Sherlock Holmes games on any platform but this might be my introduction to them. I agree with your assessment on value Glen. I'd make it a pick up for a tenner. Apart from that I'm considering adding it to my wishlist. Cheers guys.
I’ve never actually played anything like this, might pick it up on a sale some time in the future. I’ve noticed as I grow older I started appreciating less hectic and story driven games more and more. Thanks for the great review!
@@SwitchUpYt Would you recommended The Sinking City? The Deluxe version is on sale right now, but I’m a little worried about the technical and gameplay issues mentioned in your review from two years ago.
I have to say, I'm surprised they didn't even get Benadryl Gabbagepatch... Benedoop Cumberslam... Buttercup Cumbersnatch... whatever his name is to play Sherlock Holmes!
It is on sale now at the EU eshop for 50% discount, along with the sequel. I am still contemplating to grab this, but kinda cant make the decision yet. I liked Sinking City which is other gem by Frogware and uses very similar mechanics but that is not Conan Doyle story, but is on adaptation of Lovecraftian Chtulhu myths.
This and The Devil's Daughter are for sale right now for a good price ($7.49 USD). Though it's also on sale on steam for $2.99 a piece and since I own Devil's Daughter on Steam already, seems better for me to grab it on steam but this was a great review! Definitely would have convinced me to buy the Switch version if I didn't have one of the games on steam already.
I have watched almost every video you guys have created, they're all top notch🙌 but it struck me now for some reason that your score system reminds of the glory days back when I was younger, reading power play or what it's called, the score system is very similar to how your system works, I love it🤩 thanks for your amazing reviews, much love from Norway, cheers 🍻 👏 ✌️
I just picked this and The Devil's Daughter up for $7.49 USD. For that price this is an absolutely amazing game but the regular price is unreasonable for a game that old
I was waiting for the review especially this port, will be excited for connarium, which is or should be released february this year. Sinking City wasn't bad, yah it got some flaws and wasn't perfect ported but it was to me different open world detective game😃
Glen’s pronunciation and command of the English language makes me feel woefully inadequate! Always a pleasure to hear his reviews. Heaven help whosoever has the unfortunate fate of being excoriated by him.
Might actually play this now that ive seen a review for it. Never really watched Sherlock outside the RDJ films but this and the newest one where its a young Sherlock look really fun
@@SwitchUpYt yes it did, I kinda getting tired of old game coming to switch. Hope Nintendo next console brings more power at least at the PS4 pro standards.. So we won’t have to wait so long for new current titles.. I’m jus saying
I was excited for this review. But I realized that I played this a few years ago on my ps4. It was a good game. I remember enjoying it. But I don’t think I’ll be buying it again for the switch. Great review though.
Loved this on the Xbox (and the other two; devils daughter and Jack the Ripper) cant wait to add it to my collection it’s a great game and it will be great to play it on the go
Another EXCELLENT review (and dad joke 🤣)! I do have an unrelated question though. Would you guys consider adding a similar podcast to this one but reviewing Steam games?! I've become dependent on your reviews for any switch game I'm considering, and I'd LOVE your style in the Steam world too! Especially since I'm in line for the Steam Deck :-D. Either way, thank you both for all you do for the community! -Omar
Insta-buy! I've just played through ABC Murders which was good if not a bit linear and hand-held and have eagerly been waiting for Sherlock to come out on Switch.
My wife loves listening to old Sherlock Holmes mysteries, so I got this and the sequel for 50% off. She’s playing them, and I played along for two cases, but quickly got frustrated by janky movement and slow load screens. The conclusion on the two cases I did, the first and fifth were frustrating. There’s irrefutable comments from Sherlock indicating alibis, only to be ignored. It became a roll the dice game for whodoneit, as logic sort of goes out the window, and no desire to go through long load screens to replay again. Much rather stick to the strong mini games of Professor Layton over this one.
I was not a huge fan of this game back in the day and it doesn’t quite fit into my taste of games these days. I will not be picking up this port on the switch. Another valuable and thorough review though!
Cheers for the review, enjoyed it, oof, that extra fiver in the cost hacked 8 points off the value score! Think I'll pick this up though, love Sherlock Holmes and haven't played it before.
With the 25% off it is nearly 20€ here (22.49€) and it is ok for me for that price. Ofc it is 10 Bucks on ps4 becsuse it is 2 years old. This is a "new" release for the switch.
I enjoyed the detective work in The Sinking City but I am just not a follower of Sherlock Holmes so this will be a pass for me. Appreciate the detailed review.
I played this on PC back in the day. It felt too short of a game and rushed in parts. Unsure it is worth the price now on Nintendo. I would wait for a price drop for those who have never played it before.
