It doesn't have multiple meanings, it is a reference to "long" timers and I don't mean someone who spent the night in a holding tank or did a couple of "nickles", I mean someone who has logged at least a dime.
As a tattoo artist I can confirm: People get Medusa more often because she’s a symbol of female empowerment and a critique of the patriarchy. People get the spider web because they think it looks cool. People get pineapples because they like the way they look. I have never heard the swingers thing, but out of the three pictures you shared, the last example on the wrists are “right side up” to the people who got them. People get the phoenix for many different reasons. I think I’ve tattooed it post-divorce more than anything. @@fuge74 That's fine until people think it should *only* have that meaning. The only tattoo idea I have is to have chains on my arms and this started when I played God of War so yeah it might have a meaning but fuck that I just want something that looks cool
Before the spider web on the elbow meant years served in prison, it used to be a sailor tattoo to represent years spent at sea. Things can have multiple meanings and also change. The elbow is also just good placement for a spider web tattoo, not many tattoos look good on the elbow.
True. The teardrop tattoo by yhe eye has multiple meanings. And I know people who get tattoos just cause their cool and don't really care what meaning they have.
I’m western culture sailors were the first to really have tattoos and I believe they would carve into their own skin and stain under it with black powder
reality check: most tattoos don't mean anything universally. Unless it's a tear or a semicolon, people will just assume you like how the tattoo looks or have your own personal meaning behind it.
Fun fact, the tale with Medusa that you hear about is the Roman version! In the Greek version she was always a gorgon with two sisters, though she was the only mortal one and the only one that could turn things to stone with her gaze
I thought she got turned into a gorgon by Athena because of something with Poseidon and stuff ( i dont remember) and she used to be a really pretty person
@@mona4180this is actually Ovid's version of the tale. He had issues with authority and since god's were considered the ultimate authority in the greek/roman world he rewrote mythes and legends to depict the gods as even worse than they normally are depicted. A lot of people remember his version of Athena myths as she's normally known to be calm and collected, but his version she's petty and prone to anger.

@truthseeker7277, your argument presents an illogical scenario. Let's explore it further. If he were to introduce his fists to my face for having a fake prison tattoo, several flaws in his logic become apparent. Firstly, engaging in physical violence is not only illegal but also highly irrational. It would not only jeopardize his own freedom but also result in legal consequences, potentially leading to additional charges or even a return to prison. Secondly, assuming the person he is confronting is an ex-convict, it is unlikely that they would risk their newfound freedom for a fake prison tattoo. After spending time behind bars, most individuals prioritize rebuilding their lives and avoiding any actions that could potentially land them back in prison. It would be illogical for someone who has experienced the hardships of incarceration to willingly engage in violence over a mere tattoo. Moreover, it is essential to consider the context of the conversation. If both individuals are locked up, discussing tattoos, it further supports the notion that the tattoo in question is legitimate. In such a setting, tattoos often hold significant meaning and can convey personal experiences or affiliations within the prison community. Therefore, assuming that the tattoo is a fake prison tattoo would defy the logical framework established by the conversation itself. In conclusion, resorting to physical violence based on assumptions about tattoos is not only illogical but also counterproductive. It is more reasonable to engage in open-minded discussions, respecting individual choices and the unique meanings that people assign to their tattoos.
Please remember that if someone has such a tattoo it doesn't have to mean any of these meanings, you shouldn't judge a person on their tattoos if you haven't heard the meaning from someone personally, someone is allowed to get a Medusa tattoo if they just really like Greek Mythology, people are allowed to get Phoenix tattoos if they like Phoenixes and people are allowed to get Spiderweb tattoos if they like those, and any of these are allowed if someone has a different meaning for them than the common one, let people tell you the stories of their tattoos themselves
Friendly reminder to all, tattoos don’t need to have meaning and it is completely okay to get something tatted on your body just because you think it is cool!
Exactly! Dude i know people that LOVE greek mythology and thats why they have the greek gods and monsters tattooed. Thwy would be straight up offended i assumed they were sexual abused because of it

Fun fact about Medusa! Shields used to have her face on them, as at the time she was a symbol of protection Edit: a lot of people are going back and forth on this. I took an art history class in college, and my teacher showed us some old paintings and statues from ancient Greece, and I might have forgotten some details, but she was meant to protect the people with the shields
@Allspark_ SA means s*xual abuse But when Medusa was put on shields, it was mostly for physical protection during battle. Which.. I have no idea if the two are connected
To explain: the “alternate” story of Medusa involved her being a normal, beautiful priestess of the goddess Athena who had vowed herself to celibacy. and of course, because Greek gods are disgusting, Poseidon wanted her and Medusa turned him down. So he “took” her. As a result, Athena cursed her to become the snake woman she was that turned people to stone with one look and sent her away to an island. I believe the reason SA victims use Medusa is for the same reason she was seen as a symbol of protection: that curse protected her from ever being taken advantage of again. Some people think Athena cursed her out of jealousy, some believe it was to protect her. Either way, that’s the real story.
Don’t forget the triskelion with a hole between the three branches for BDSM lifestyle! I commented on how much I liked the design on someone and was amazed by their response 😅

@@LYNXYBINXYAnother fun fact: some writers before Ovid wrote Athena to be *protecting* Medusa instead of punishing her, the whole "turning people into stone thing" was meant to be used as a way to ward off men. Ovid is interesting because he often wrote the greek gods to be far more vindictive and petty compared to earlier iterations.
The meanings behind tattoos are subject to change as time progresses. Hell, they're subject to change from one person to another from one minute to the next. Don't look at someone and think you know anything based on their skin.
Also symbolisms are regional, it varies a lot from community to community, country to country, religion to religion... aside from every person having their own symbolisms based on experiences...
When you say the "original" Medusa story I assume you mean Ovid's version, where Neptune raped her in the temple of Minerva. But you should know that that isn't the actual original story. Ovid's Metamorphoses are a collection of Romanized Greek myths, with deliberate changes made to the stories to make the gods look bad, due to Ovid's own distaste for authority figures. They are not the "original" stories.
Your experience the spiderweb tattoo can easily be applied to Medusa tattoos as well. It just looks cool and many people don't care about "hidden meanings" behind them.
@@kabamm_-DI think that's what they're saying. Just like how she got the spider-web because "it looks cool" people also get the Medusa because "it looks cool" without worrying about the meaning behind it. ultimately the tattoo's meaning or lack of should only matter to the wearer and we shouldn't presume someone's life experiences based on it.
Do you even know why people got the Medusa tattoo? As in why Medusa and not anyone else? Cause Medusa is a victim of SA, and she was curse because she was SA in Athena ancient temple despite her devoting herself (Aka virginity to Athena) but since she got SA in the temple she got punish. She was a victim. Anyway some people interpret that Athena didn't curse Medusa but instead bless Medusa since now medusa can protect herself. Either way, if you have a medusa tattoo it usually mean her character and story speaks to you. Either way it's related to SA and women empowerment and such. The same reason people might get archilles tattoo. It's not just always about "women hair snake cool tattoo"

Actually coincidence. I struggled with anger issues all my life and recently have learned to cope with them. Two weeks ago I went to the tattoo shop and got a Phoenix tattoo just because I felt like it without even knowing the meaning. This world is crazy
The phoenix is also frequently used by people who survive cancer (specifically chemo) and has seen use by trans people who've "finished" transitioning. Many people who have near death experiences feel great getting these as well. All art has some kind of meaning to it, but it can be interpreted in many ways, especially when you don't "do your research" to figure out what other people might think it symbolizes to be common. The tear and semi-colon are actual symbols with meaning, mostly because they are otherwise things people wouldn't find appealing. (I mean most people don't find these tattoos appealing even with the meaning, as their intention is to mark a permanent reminder into you).
I think the medusa thing can apply in the same way your spider tat. Not everyone gets tattoos for their meanings. Some people just get them cause they think they look cool.
@tgiacin435 well, seeing as Medusa was sa'd by Poseidon, then became a proactive symbol for women who went through through that/in general I can see why she represents this (also this is down to the version you read)
In some tellings, she is athenas priestess and she either was sa'd or had sex in her temple, and Athena cursed/blessed her. In some tellings, she was born a gorgon.
Again, tattoos have multiple meanings, and the meanings are individual, with a few highly culturally dependent exceptions. You can't draw any conclusions based on the tattoo someone is wearing. The only way you're going to find out what a person's tattoo means, is by asking the person who wears them. Do a search for the most infamous prison tattoo, the teardrop, and count how many meanings they actually have. The same goes for the Medusa and spider web tattoos. These aren't secret meanings, these are ways to pigeonhole people based on how they've modified their body. Let's not do that.
yeah, like its one thing for these symbols to have meaning thats recognizable for lots of people, but gatekeeping art because you think itll apply to everyone who uses that is just kinda shitty. like anyone could just happen to use a medusa tattoo or a pineapple tattoo... there shouldnt be meanings attached to them unless the person attached it to them. otherwise i feel like it defeats the point of getting a tattoo in the first place. its something YOU choose to have permanently engraved on YOUR body, for whatever reason its important to you, and only you can decide why that is. not the general "consensus" other people have.

Every single time ive talked to someone about the Medusa tattoo (both one they already have or one theyre planning on getting) in real life, they said they like it because "it looks cool", "i like greek mythology", or even "shes hot and i like snakes". You shouldnt go around assuming everybody is operating on the same assumptions. Thats just a good way to distort your view of reality
It doesn't really matter tbh. Most of the people get tattoos cuz they liked it. Medusa tattoo theory is really famous in internet. But people get it anyway cuz it looks cool, or they like her character. Not everything has to be deep yk. U make what u like.
Even worse when these symbols make no sense. The whole story of medusa was between females. One was jealous and powerful. One was beautiful and weak. The ironically symbolises survivors of sexual assault is the beautiful and weak one. And also… why sexual assault?! Medusa was never hurt by a man in the original story. Sure, there were some stories where Poseidon forced himself upon her but not many. Most stories involve her choice to engage the affair, her having his 2 children and becoming his wife by the Greek’s rule of Gods marrying their sexual partners. She was turned into a gorgon for breaking her vow, which was found when she decided to ‘partake’ in Poseidon within the temple to Athena. Athena and Poseidon being enemies resulted in a punishment that would hurt the both of them. Could’ve chosen a much better character to represent the strength of women who overcome the anguish of SA. Ps. Medusa being raped comes from Ovid’s greek tales around 0 BC, he was known for focusing on sex, adultery and all things related. It is a bad source because he literally wrote about everything from the birth of the Universe to the birth of Caeser (he was Roman). The oldest and most ‘correct’ would be from around 800bc from Hesiod’s theogony. I think a much cooler female empowerment icon from Greek mythology would be Nyx, who is often shown as the first being to ever exist, although later depicted as being created by Phanes the ‘god of creation’ and was also said to have been an image of fear for Zeus, who refused to punish Hypnos after he sought protection from Nyx for, on request from Hera, he lulled Zeus to sleep (which enabled the stories of Hercules). So yeah, Nyx is literally the girl boss of Greek mythology given that not even the arrogant godking was willing to offend her. Oh, she also facilitated Zeus’ reign as she literally told him how to take over from Cronus so its kinda like the whole ‘behind every successful man is a stronger woman kinda story’ She also had a pretty wholesome life living with her daughter.
@@tylerclarke4829the reasoning behind the medusa symbology is that medusa was r***ed by Poseidon, and that athena punished her for being a victim. Whether you agree or not, it doesn't matter.
@@mona4180that’s what there saying Greek and roman mythology are very similar but they have differences like in one she was turned into a gorgon and in another one she was always one that’s because they are not the same mythology but they are very similar but it was actually Roman (yes I did search this up I’m to lazy to get out of bed and I read some articles on it) that she was always a gorgon in Greek mythology she was turned to a Gorgon by Athena oh and in Roman mythology Medusa was actually Medousa so while the story is similar in Roman mythology she did not get turned into a Gorgon she was born one and had a different name I hope this helped clear up what this person was trying to let people know
In the real version she was just a queen who was killed
@mona4180 she got raped by poseidon in Athena's temple and got the blame
Tattoos are free form art. Don’t feel like you can’t get a certain piece just because people have ascribed it. You give the piece meaning.
A scene from SoA just came to mind. It involved a blowtorch.
Is that what you would say to the ex cons, as the y introduce their fists to your face, for getting a fake prison tattoo?
I have a giant wolf covering the front of my throat in its entirety. I love it. Old ppl dont 😂
Got it Swastika means piece
Yea I’m still gonna get the spider web on my elbow. Just looks fuckin dope yo

@Allspark_sexual abuse
@Allspark_ SA means s*xual abuse
But when Medusa was put on shields, it was mostly for physical protection during battle.

And the one that got it. Just look at Norse symbols.
@@Strawberries1994 this is true. However the original Medusa story is heartbreaking and absolutely kept the original symbolism.
This is indeed true but there are general ideas and meanings behind many tattoos for people who want to get something meaningful to themselves
Your experience the spiderweb tattoo can easily be applied to Medusa tattoos as well. It just looks cool and many people don't care about "hidden meanings" behind them.
But the meaning can also have no meaning people can just get tattoos
@@kabamm_-DI think that's what they're saying. Just like how she got the spider-web because "it looks cool" people also get the Medusa because "it looks cool" without worrying about the meaning behind it.

@tgiacin435 well, seeing as Medusa was sa'd by Poseidon, then became a proactive symbol for women who went through through that/in general I can see why she represents this (also this is down to the version you read)
@@Luluthefaery see I read she and Zeus had an affair, and Hera was jealous and turned her into a gorgon
@tgiacin435 as I said it depends on the telling because most folklore depended on word of mouth rather than a solid source

Yeah, this was a terrible video showcasing some major ignorance.
yeah, like its one thing for these symbols to have meaning thats recognizable for lots of people, but gatekeeping art because you think itll apply to everyone who uses that is just kinda shitty. like anyone could just happen to use a medusa tattoo or a pineapple tattoo... there shouldnt be meanings attached to them unless the person attached it to them. otherwise i feel like it defeats the point of getting a tattoo in the first place. its something YOU choose to have permanently engraved on YOUR body, for whatever reason its important to you, and only you can decide why that is. not the general "consensus" other people have.

Oh, she also facilitated Zeus’ reign as she literally told him how to take over from Cronus so its kinda like the whole ‘behind every successful man is a stronger woman kinda story’
She also had a pretty wholesome life living with her daughter.
@@tylerclarke4829the reasoning behind the medusa symbology is that medusa was r***ed by Poseidon, and that athena punished her for being a victim. Whether you agree or not, it doesn't matter. I've seen dumbasses who thought that getting gang tattoos will make them look cooler and by gods they were some stupid dumbasses.
I always get questions about the butterfly tattoo on my wrist and the ; tattoo and on ny other wrist, and people are usually so sweet when they do find out what it means, it’s adorable.
Meanings
; usually represents someone who survived a suicide attempt ( the semi-colon is grammatically used when an author decides to continue on a sentence rather than end it, which suicide survivors use to represent their survival)
The butterfly tattoo is commonly used as just a pretty thing to put on your body, but one on your wrist can signify a self-harm survivor (look up “The Butterfly Project” for more detail)
what color is your butterfly? mine is on my collarbone and dark blue and orange
The butterfly is also the universal symbol of freedom, I have one on my foot, red and green
@@privateaccount2056 mine is a blue morpho, so a range of blues
Butterflies are also a pro ana symbol
Im glad you survived it.
what she said at the end, she said that whilst having like, 999999999999 tattoos herself 💀
My teacher has the spiderweb elbow.... UM- ☠️
The tattoo means whatever you say it means when someone asks. If someone sees my ink and tries to tell me what it means, they’re gonna talk to the back of my head cause I’m walking.
I have a small tattoo on my back that says "I EAT ASS" next time someone asks me what it means im gonna be talking to their ass!
I wrote my brothers tattoo in ogham which is ancient Irish writing, he can't read it but I can and we joked about it in a pub and my sisters bf literally said "that could mean anything bad and you wouldn't know" I looked at him with a grin and said "aye the perfect 4 letters, c*nt" my brothers face went from laughing to horrified shock. It doesn't say that though it's just "That's it" in Irish
this is literally an arian brotherhood tattoo mate. horrible fucking advice.
tattoo's are art, art is subjective and is what it means to the artist or the person getting the tattoo. i know people don't really listen in art class but THAT is a very important lesson.
Exactly... and exactly why some people get those tats not for the reasons stated.
They might have a personal reason why.
Maybe a Greek historian?
Maybe a Hawaiian pineapple?
Maybe a D&D player for phoenix?
I just thought my Medusa tattoo looked cool 🥲
I had no idea these particular things as tattoos had specifics meanings
"Too many medusa tattoos is exactly the problem"
"So anyway here's a tattoo I got because it looked cool and I didn't know there was hidden meaning"
They were saying that there are too many people who have been SA'd.

Very rarely happens. Mostly just lies.
@@staceygram5555 Um, I do not know what to say. I have been SA'd and abused, and have watched it happen around me too at a very young age. Please do not go around saying that people are lying, because that is so incredibly harmful.
@@MonstersandMana008OMG are you ok? That must’ve been tough! I am sorry you went through that D: and I am sorry for the trama you’ve endured through that time :(
No one deserves that!
@@MonstersandMana008cool useless comment yes they know that the point was “Medusa tattoos are overused” is valid because people just get tattoos that look cool. So it’s overused because some people weren’t actually sexually assaulted
My personal favorite is the rings around peoples legs- they each represent a beloved person that that individual lost in their lifetime.
DAMN, IM GONNA HAVE ALOT OF RINGS AROUND MY LEGS!
@@DeusBadger IKR ME TOO 🤙🏻

Alright, time to get 70.
Nice idea but I’m not tryna blackout my legs

Just finished math homework and watching this - “SA- me: Surface area
I love how other folks determine what my tattoos mean. The spider web on the elbow was originally used by old Navy dudes to signify the time spent manning the rails. Prisoners took it after that.
This is a point. Just because other people use the symbology doesn’t mean everyone does. Like what if someone was just really drunk, spoke about spongebob and then got a pineapple tattoo. Doesn’t make them swingers. Does make them idiots with a story to tell.
For a society so focused on removing generalisations, we sure do love to generalise.
