  • @RoyalFusilier
    @RoyalFusilier 8 років тому +38

    One thing that really got to me in a good way about Attack on Titan relates to the uniforms. Specifically, there's women in the human military. And they wear the uniform like the guys do. It's identical, down to pants. Now, given how the soldiers operate in this setting, there are extremely practical reasons for why pants would be important. But, like. I don't think that would stop many shows from going the skirt route, if you know what I mean. In fact, it would probably encourage that.
    We do see civilian women and kids wearing skirts and more traditionally feudal attire, but when you join the military, you wear the thing, like everyone else. It's a symbol of who you are, what do you do, what you represent to the world, etc.
    In a general sense. The women are just, there, like the guys are. Some do amazing, heroic things (and get called mary sue while their literal male counterpart doesn't get a tenth of the flack, isn't that funny and interesting, wonder why that happens), some of them die horribly and immediately, and some are just there doing their job like the rest.
    And, like, they just, Are. It's actually the correct way things should be, which is that the gender only matters... when it matters. Like religion or what town you're from or your handedness. And oh my god it's so astonishingly refreshing to experience and see that, because one day, that's going to be how it is, hopefully. It's just not going to be an issue. One day.
    An odd bit of hope in a story whose premise is 'we're backed into the wall and doing a species-wide Final Stand'. Loves me some heroic last stands.
    Actually come to think of it, Attack on Titan is literally asexual. The most that happens is scattered hints towards a romance or two, and Mikasa's abs, which are admittedly hot af. But the show just, doesn't even go there, which is probably one of the big reasons for my observation on uniforms. It is sad that it has to be a 0 or 1, though.

    • @marcomeme4875
      @marcomeme4875 8 років тому +4

      Fusilier ?? The only person who's called a Mary Sue is Mikasa because her DEFINING trait is the fact that she's so much better than everyone else. The fact that you scrambled a full on feminist essay about this stupid ass, poorly written series and how everyone wear hideous, brown outfits is absolutely mindboggling.

    • @RoyalFusilier
      @RoyalFusilier 8 років тому +19

      Fusilier Yeah, except that's bullshit and gender matters in the military.

    • @nfmaster4851
      @nfmaster4851 7 років тому +9

      Levi doesn't get as much flack because he shows other personality traits. Care, rage, compassion, apathy etc. Mikasa, while shw does show these emotions as well, comes across as dull and unremarkable, because she does not express them in an endearing and engaging way. Also, we have a very detailed backstory on Levi, and it explains how he got to be the person he is. Mikasa got a backstory explaining why she likes Eren....that's it, that's her defining trait. She doesn't have a single line of dialogue that isn't about Eren, and it's things like these that kill a character.
      Oh, and what kills the show is its pacing issues, lack of good characterization, with only very few gaining depth, dumb shounen tropes (it has basically become Bleach), and overall just poor writing and buildup that is nullified by poor payoff. That, and the overplayed drama and "emotional" scenes. AoT does have some redeeming qualities though, it isn't "shit"

    • @missingscrew7953
      @missingscrew7953 7 років тому +1

      That's one of the few points I will give AoT is their gender representation is fair. It's just not a good story though or even has good characters, although I like Mikasa.

    FMA 2003 is my all time favorite anime, and people have been giving me shit for that for years. I've always *liked* Brotherhood, but I've also always found it a bit too hammy and tonally uneven and the characters feel too exaggerated for me to consider them real people in a way I do with the 03 show. There's just too much in the presentation that takes me out of it emotionally to get why everyone prefers it SO heavily to the original. Everyone's like "aaaaaah fukkin', the Godwin is terrible" but no one has given me a compelling reason why that is.

    Why someone (myself) loved Attack on Titan:
    It's not just because "people die", for me it was due to thematic resonance with the core of who I am alongside this gritty and compelling narrative. Eren and many of the other mains in the series weren't content to sit back on their asses and watch events unfold. They fight because they have no other alternative, because its the only way to keep their loved ones alive. That duty present in the characters that _sooooooooooo_ many other anime characters lack (one of the big reasons I did not like Shinji throughout most of NGE). Their constant drive to not give in to the overwhelming despair that arises from the hopelessness of the scenario. To keep pushing forward even if it means walking over the corpse of a friend. The plot is well written enough that when complimented with Araki's direction and the ever present themes that I basically fell in love with the anime. (Fuck the anime original episode 24)
    Why one might like the characters:
    I'll use Mikasa. In the early episodes she is just this stoic girl that is very attached to Eren. She prioritizes him, and expresses that she will follow him anywhere. Not the type of character to really appeal to someone with that alone. But then we learn why she cares for him so deeply. Her parents are murdered in front of her eyes, and she is about to get sold into a life of sex-slaver (she's nine, by the way) and Eren saves her life. Following this destruction of her entire world Eren is the first one to extend a hand of friendship to this broken shell of a girl. She always wears the scarf because it was the first bit of warmth (literal and metaphorical) when her life turned to shit. Yes, she' still has her stoic demeanor and love for Eren, but she's not solely characterized by those alone. (I could elaborate like this on other characters, but I don't see a need to.)
    Brown colors are just reflective of the poor and dour setting. They can't afford a ton of dyes or paints, so they use what they have. It makes the entire world slightly unpleasant to look at because it's not really a pleasant place.
    On the uniforms: Sure, it could be so people can easily cosplay, OR it could be due to the militaristic setting and how in the real world the military have uniforms.
    It's fine to not like the show for whatever reasons, to each their own, I just wanted to share why I (and possibly others) like it outside of the lack of plot armor and fight scenes (both of which are still merits in my book.)

    My problem with Attack on Titan is that it became overly politically focused for a good amount of chapters, resulting in barely any action and significant character development. In fact, outside of maybe Krista Lenz / Historia Reiss, none of the characters developed whatsoever - Eren got a new power-up, but nothing about him as an actual character changed at all.
    The action only just recently returned again also, and the only thing keeping me coming back is that I really want to know what is in that fucking basement.
    It's not really bad, it was just very uneventful for a stupidly long period of time.
    The anime is also a lot more exciting in my opinion.
    Elfen Lied is in retrospect also quite a laughable show with a half-decent plot, garbage story, and garbage characters with garbage motives for why they do what they do, and a hamfisted payoff.

      you're just freeloading love for it without giving any backbone, what makes the op nice? and bringing up the hate bandwagon is irrelevant, every show has a hate bandwagon, I don't hate it, I don't have any care for it
      I also never brought up whether it was a good show or not, in case this is specifically a reply to me, if you want to talk from a critic's standpoint, it was bad, but critic's don't decide on people's emotions so you can like whatever you like, whether you're talking in a subjective manner or objective.

    I did really like Attack on Titan up until the end of the season, when it didn't fucking have an ending, which I really fucking hate. I realize now, that I didn't really care about any of the characters, and the pacing was shit, but I definitely was invested in the mystery of the Titans, which to me were horrifying.

    Will you ever give your thoughts on Kaleido star? I haven't seen too many shows, so I don't know, but that's the only show I've seen where every character has 5-6 outfits, and the show is long enough that you see them in all of them, and then in later episodes they'll wear the same outfits as in one of the earlier episodes, and you can make mental notes about what clothes each character has, and that makes the show realistic and I really liked that.

    The appeal of AoT is definitely not that characters die. It's the optimism. If you keep watching the show you see it actually gets pretty uplifting, in that it shows humanity repeatedly banning together and continuing to fight against impossible odds. In the Walking Dead and other zombie media, you always see humanity falling apart into chaos and anarchy in the face of the apocalypse. In AoT you see humanity coming together and working harder. (Yes I know about the stuff that happens later in the manga but still). It's not the best show ever, but if you didn't watch far enough to spot this then you oughtta try it again.

    Do you think there would be a point up to which there isn't much divergence between the 2003 and FMAB, such that you could watch the 2003 version for its better direction and TV-pacing (and the more affecting version of some of the scenes that show up in both) in favor of (at least part of) the rougher first 13 episodes of FMAB?

I thought that the idea they had that the Homunculi in that version were people who were botched resurrections like Mrs. Elric sounded interesting on paper, the most interesting thing about the older show. Did they fuck it up? Was it actually a bad idea that contradicted the lore? What happened with it?

    I'm not going to say a lot because no one reads those comments anyway, but I must say, I completely disagree with what you said about everyone being dressed the same way in SnK. This is the military, them having a combat uniform is logic and actually makes the show seem more serious and realistic. For comparison, in god eater everyone is dressed in their chosen stupid outfits which makes the whole war look like a random game that people do for fun, not to mention how idiotic every individual costume looks, I've watched 3 episodes of god eater, and half of my watchtime was spend thinking "how are those clothes even in the slightest bit practical in a fighting environment".

    Wow...he hit the nail right on the head with Elfen Lied. I watched the show when I was 14, and 4 years later I only remembered the "shocking" parts and remember really liking it. Now, after reminding me about the peeing and shit like that, I remember how horrible it is. Also, I actually prefer the 2003 version over Brotherhood, and I love Brotherhood, mostly because I like how it didn't turn into "main character uses the power of friendship to beat up god". I liked how everything was a bit more low key and more character driven. Nobody became extremely OP or anything. It just felt like the story was a bit tighter than Brotherhood, especially because everything was a lot less over-the-top like in Brotherhood. Things like how the story was really just about an old lady's obsession with staying young and beautiful forever and not about a second Hoenheim that becomes god and Ed and the rest fight him with the power of friendship. Also, I actually really like the bitter-sweet ending. I thought that was great. It showed how both brothers were willing to give their lives for each other, and actually did.

    Attack on Titan is not a dark super serious drama, it's black fucking comedy. The titans are fucking OP, everything is hopeless, people die in fucked up gratuitous ways, and I laugh at it all, it just tries way too hard. Team Four Star doesn't even need to spoof it, it's a spoof of itself. It's an unwitting spoof on the nature of grimdark fantasy action adventure, the bland characters, the pointlessly drawn out story, shallow world building; it's all there. And the best part of it all is the fact that one little change in the story could have made it into the Game of Thrones (that's Game of Thrones, the tv series, not A Song of Ice and Fire, the book series) of anime: Erin dies subverting the shounen action hero trope, Mikasa kills herself in a blind rage trying to avenge him and is shat out by a titan for all to see, Armin becomes the new protagonist as he actually has a thimble full of personality, a few of the others from the unit like bread girl (Sasha, yes I had to look it up) support him, and the senior rangers round things out as the elite badasses the rest aspire to become. Then it might actually be passable as grimdark and not black comedy.

    The problem with FMA is that neither piece of media is "perfect", but the three al together make something truly amazing. The first adaptation is slow and with a lot of bad filler (the other brothers and the mannequin guy), but even some of those are really interesting (like Fire vs Metal and the Warehouse 13). There's some good execution on the first one, like the homunculus origin and the way Shou Tucker is manage. That being said, I find Brotherhood almost perfect, except, for the first three episodes. The first one shouldn't exist! And the third one should be the first. The manga is amazing, but the art feels a little empty at the beginning (particularly in the backgrounds). I agree mostly with you, except on AoT, which I still find interesting.

    Why don't people watch FMA 2003 up through the Shou Tucker story arc, then transfer to Brotherhood? I feel like Brotherhood tried to rush through what little it had in common with 2003's story arc, with the depth coming into the series after the the fate of Dr. Marcoh was changed.

    • @hawkflame9584

      Godmason because of the timelines of the two series don't add up. People forget that the 2003 version of the Shou Tucker storyline happened years earlier. Nina was present while Hughes wife was pregnant with Ellicia, who is 3 years old during the series proper.
      People who suggest that mixing and matching between the early episodes of FMA and FMA:Brotherhood don't realize that just cannot work. The differences are there from the very beginning, just that Brotherhood only becomes *completely* different from episode 14 onwards.

    Hey! Sorry if this comment repeats itself a lot but I kinda wanted to get my thoughts out there about Attack on Titan if you were interested I guess. The first season of the anime does cover it's basic storyline of Titans vs Humanity however I feel you would've been more gripped if you carried on past the 5 episodes as the Uprising arc and especially it's current arc focus on putting complex characters into shitty situations and how they adapt to this. I feel like it develops extremely well with some of the best character and plot development I have seen. As the arcs go on, you see more about the Titans and how they were formed, history about the walls, the people who once ruled the kingdom and does get very in depth during these two arcs I mentioned. The focus also goes onto the government, hierarchies within the walls, secrets of villages and such and I really find these aspects amazing in my opinion. I also really like the ongoing theories and things that need answers however I can see why people like yourself would not like it so much. I suppose the first episodes you watched are slightly bleak but explaining like "this is the problem and this is the wall and these are the Titans who do not allow people to be free" was possibly the hardest thing as it also had to be entertaining and grab the audience. As I see in your case it obviously didn't and if you could get pass that until shit really kicks in around episode 8-onwards then that's when you see the story really come to life. Also, many people comment on how the show is known for people dying etc but in all honesty there aren't many deaths. The over exaggeration of this causes people to turn away from Attack on Titan and it's main selling point isn't really how people die but what people will do in situations and how far they are willing to go to achieve their own dreams. Many people think this show is about sacrifice and people dying when there was only 1 character from the main group who died in the third arc (but gets more... gloomy? as time goes on in the manga, I guess.) People's morals and feelings are really put to the test and as a meta and analysis writer, I find it so interesting seeing people grow and how they act when certain things are put infront of them. For example, one of the main characters Levi is really questioned about his morals due to a traumatic and emotionally abusive childhood that causes himself to question whether he really is human or not and where his growth of empathy for other people stems from.
    You also mentioned how the characters aren't as likable or don't have any qualities you found interesting, I would also like to put this case and point into how you don't really see much development until after ep 9 or 10, it is fairly slow paced and I found myself really attached to it by episode 3 when it was airing however I understand what you mean about the characters not really being fleshed out or likable. I would probably blame this on the arc itself as the characters really start to shine later on in the season so it's understandable. I guess this whole show is more about waiting it out and if you aren't attached by the first episode it's just a waiting game until you find a part you really do like. My friend has had a common situation as yourself, however he read the manga which carries on past the first season and really did like the characters and found that they grow and shine so much more in later arcs.
    Like you say, it's totally cool that you weren't gripped by it and I'm glad you at least gave it a chance because it has become one of the most popular animes to exist and the "fandom" is constantly growing so to know that you tried it out means a lot to me I guess. Since it's been my favourite show for the past 3 years I won't bore you as to why I love it so much but feel free to check the manga out if you ever feel like it I guess. Thanks for your consistency on the channel and keep up the good work :)

    Interesting when you brought up the AOT uniform thing. Surely one major aspect of the uniforms being truly uniform is that it mimics an actual military. One of the issues with a lot of 'military' anime is you'll have people in massively customised and varied uniforms which make no sense. Usually you can't stick bows, extra belts or capes on your army uniform.

Pride in brotherhood is interesting and his shadow powers look cool as fuck, but they are straight up magic and make no physical sense, you can't pull that shit and still say alchemy is a science.

    I binged AoT after it was finished. I enjoyed it well enough, but I've never had the urge to rewatch it. When I watched it all at once the flaws don't seem as obvious since you don't have week to week to think about it. But as time went on I realized there really isn't much to think about when it comes to AoT, and the longer it takes for season 2 to come out the less I give a shit about the whole series.
    I have similar feelings to you on FMA 2003. For me though I'd say its greatest high point is the episode where they first introduce Izumi. You get a way better sense of her character from how she interacts with the townsfolk, and that damn scene with the cat still rips my guts out every time.

    sorry to let my analyzer out but the coloring in titan makes sense when you compair it to the world. The outer wall, where the first few episodes spends the most time at, is filled with poor colors like brown. This is because in the anime and manga you hear about how scacre resorces like food and raw materials are. The outer wall is the poorest and brown is a poor color which is why building and characters wear the color brown excluding the soldiers which I'll get to soon. The inner wall which we are in the final episodes is the safest and richest and the brown fades to more whites and reds. Because we know the inner wall is so rich the people living there can have luxuries like good food, better architecture that the outer wall, and fine white marble. Then the fight scene starts and it goes back to brown and red which I don't get why the color goes brown when the final fight breaks out. Ot could be to make the red and white colors of the impacts stand out, I dont know why would would do that when Eren is a brown titan. The underground city that we see in Levi's OVA uses dark colors because it's fucking underground are you going to fill it with yellow.
    I don't get the uniforms when it comes to those fucking belts. Are so many of them even needed? Fine, they hold the 3DGM, whatever but couldn't the MG be held in another way when it might already pretty fucking heavy. So why would you want that shit and had tanks strapped to your body when it will weigh you down. And those fucking skits, where just having white pants not good enough? You had to put an extra price of clothing that looked like a skit over simple white pants? I don't get it, someone please explain the design of those uniforms to me. The belts and slots are 93% of my problems with this show.

    When you were talking about AOT, I felt like you didn't actually watch it (I felt you moved away after season 1), I do agree with some of your points, specially shasha being the first engaging charchter but than you get Levi and Commandar pixies and Commandar erevin, reiner etc etc are all interesting character.
