@@markmd9 At that time, I lived in Crimea and know from people about his stay in Foros (Crimean residence) more than you can read in mass-media like CNN or BBC. It is a joke that KGB locked him - he could leave residence any time. People from Moscow took a flight to rescue him and bring to Moscow from military airport nearby. In Russian public opinion (ordinary people, not brained-washed with propaganda) he initiated this plot using remarkable ability to play undercarpet games, and, then, was just pretending that he is totally innocent. No respect at all to his personality in Russian public opinion!

Gorbachev was correct "in the main",

    a liberal, more democratic version.
It's a very bad sign that Putin refuses to attend his funeral,

Sadly, his dream may have been taken away by an opponent of his who wants to corrupt the country down the dark path, it doesn't mean it's lost forever. Mikhail Gorbachev deserves all our consideration and respect. And, the recognition of the Russian population of the great statesman that was Mikhail Gorbachev is notorious by the great affluence of people in the last farewell to their former President. In fact, Mikhail Gorbachev, in addition to being a peacemaker by having contributed to the end of the Cold War, also allowed for a better relationship with the countries of the West, with the consequent increase in Russian trade ties and thus allowing for greater economic enrichment of Russia itself.
In addition, the transition from a regime of Political, Economic and Social Organization strongly centralized and planned at the state level, to a more liberal regime where freedom of private initiative would be allowed at an economic level, would always be a very difficult process to go through. And, in fact, the USSR was dismantled not in the period of Mikhail Gorbachev's rule but in the period of the complicated personality of Boris Yeltsin, the successor of Mikhail Gorbachev.
Mikhail Gorbachev was a peacemaker politician, who had the foresight to try to introduce necessary reforms to the collapsing and lapsed regime in the Soviet Union. Vladimir Putin, who did not want to give the well-deserved state funeral to Mikhail Gorbachev, is a Russian war-making politician whose imperialist policies are a clear civilisational setback.

It is very simple. Gorbachev opened Russia and tried to install a democracy, but he was naive to understand the politics of the West.
The western politicians promised him NATO will not be extended to ex-Soviet countries. Gorbachev was naive because didn't ask as normally a politician will do for a written agreement or a treaty.
He was silent about the war in Ukraine because it is his direct responsibility that even Ukraine wants to join NATO. Gorbachev committed a huge mistake endangering Russia by blindly believing the West. I am sure in his late years he should be telling himself often how he was so stupid to do such a grave mistake. He died regretting his naive actions. Must have been very bad years for him to live and see how he was blundered.

Gorbachev is not well-liked in Russia so Putrid does not want to be associated with him. Unfortunately Gorbachev was given the impossible task of changing not only the way business was done but the way people thought and acted. The Russian people couldn't manage the transition and inflation ran out of control on his watch - he was however a good man and encouraged free speech and even a democracy of sorts. Of course Putrid has undone all of this taking the Russians back to the stone age where I'm afraid the majority belong as a people. They just cannot get their heads around free speech, democracy, or how to work and or live without corruption in every single part of their lives. And I have worked in the post Soviet Union by the way before someone asks how I came to these conclusions.

Stalin died comparatively young in 1953 at the age of 73 - he could have lived another 10 years or longer in which case he would have been responsible for millions more deaths. Stalin was one of history’s 3 mass murderers, Hitler and Mao being the others. If life did improve in the Soviet Union era it came at a very high price indeed. In Russian culture the ethical norma says "Keep silence about dead people if nothing good to say". In my memory, Gorbachev's case is unique in term of how many bad wishes of hell, anecdotes, humiliating comments were released in public domain. Even Yeltsin who responsible for economic decline during 90th is less controversial figure in modern history of Russia.

In the west they called him Gorbi Surely the west is mourning their greatest collaborator and ally in the destruction of the Soviet Union. Those who love traitors let them mourn and whip for their hero is no more. It just like how the west mourn Mandela and millions of Black South Africans didn't. The west has tainted his character beyond repair and beyond rebranding. What this man did to the legacy of Lenin was horrible and cold. I am glad he was never murdered by anybody but let to live the results of his betrayal. The fact that he confessed that the west has betrayed him it means he had a deal with them to intentionally collapse the Soviet Union. I am not Russian but you should know that the oppressed world dependent on the USSR for their liberty from the draconian western oppressors and Gorbachev destroyed the only pillar that kept the west in check. The USSR was not about him or how he felt about the system but about how it assisted millions of Africans, Koreans, Chinese, Cuba, Indians and Eastern Germany to gain independence. He opened the door for separatists and narrow-minded nationalist to catalyze the dissolution intentionally. What Poroshenko and Zelensky is doing to Ukraine is not different to what Gorbachev did to the Soviet Union. The US will never give New York and Texas their independent but expect Russia should just roll-over and die.
