  • A jazzy MIDI tune using the Virtual SoundCanvas VST, which uses the same crunchy lofi sounds as GM.DLS (the MIDI player built into Windows) but lets me control the volume envelope and has a filter and reverb+chorus+delay built in.
VSC also lets you use more than one MIDI drum channel, which comes in handy to thicken up the drums.
Used Luftikus (EQ) and LoudMax (Limiter) on the master.

This is super nice, well done! I'm sad about the fact that the old Roland VSC VST is no longer available. Is there a version of it available in one of the Roland Cloud deals, or are you using an old legacy version?

Yeah unfortunately both VSC (2001) and SCVA (2016) are no longer available from Roland. Removing the newer one in particular was a dumb move. Software is just 1s and 0s, they can't be discontinued, they'll always exist. But to use these things, one is basically left to their own devices to either buy used vintage units or seek out old software archives or use soundfont versions. I use a lot of old 32-bit plugins, they just vibe with me more, and they are snappy and load fast.

@@zxbryc That sucks. I'm gonna have a look at Archive and see what I can find. I've seen some different hardware units on the used marked here (in Norway), but they're pretty rare and generally overpriced. Would be cool to pick one up though, haha.

The trouble with this type of music is it sounds like a cheap midi keyboard from the 80s/90s and noithing can change that.

Do you mean that 'samples can never replace real instruments' in general or that you can't stand the crappy standard MIDI sounds? 😄
There's a whole spectrum of increasingly better sounds. Yamaha MU2000's XG MIDI would sound better. Then you got other 90s stuff like Roland JV-1080, Korg Trinity and Yamaha EX5 - is there a point where such keyboards stop sounding cheap/cheesy?
