    My great-grandfather ran a VCR / TV repair shop for years and years until he passed away. Now any time a friend says they're getting rid of a TV I can't let them - I have to fix it and find it a new home! Thanks for this video. CRTs are near - indestructible and always worth an attempt at saving!

    $59.95 ... the good old days. Most people would just throw it away. Not many people out there fixing things anymore. When i was a kid the TV repairman would come to the house with a huge, and I mean huge, box of tubes. Just because something was broken didn't mean it was garbage back then. Good video!!

      I'm sick and tired of our disposable society - so much that could be repaired, often quite easily, is just scrapped. Major manufacturers don't help either, they just love to make things hard to repair by overcharging for spare parts or repair services.

      That story very much mirrors my own, we used to have a repair man come out too.
      I love crts i would never throw one out most of my collection is what i find in the trash or on the side of the road, i build and repair retro arcade Cabinets and make arcade crt monitors and use the tubes from those tv sets i find, marry them up with an arcade crt chassis and good to go, most of the tvs i find the tubes are in very good health it beggers belief why anyone would want to throw out a working tv but hey ho they live on with me, the old tv chassis I just gut and use them for parts to repair arcade monitors.

    Ron!! Joe's making videos on the channel behind your back again!!! :-D
    2001 TV needs new capacitors in 2022. Meanwhile my big 1983 Philips living room TV still running on all original parts: Pathetic. (then again that TV was pretty much the top of the line then, so not engineered to a price point. And these Philips are overengineered. It started developing dry joints a few years back, but didn't need any replacement components... apart from the CRT... old one had barely any blue)
    Note to blanket recappers: If the device doesn't have a lot of different faults at the same time, just swap the caps that are near heat sources! (there's one tucked between one ginormous, one huge and one big resistor and on the remaining side was a relay. This cap is cooked. Baked.) No reason to replace the caps in the frontend section (jungle IC). There aren't any heat sources and lots of open PCB space, so these caps will probably last another decade or two.

    On Sanyo's from that 90s-2000s it is common for the vertical output IC to get cold solder joints and if not fix will eventually blow up the chip along with other components.

      That reminds me of the IBM PCjr CRT monitors from the mid eighties; They formed cold solder joints around the vertical hold transistor & flyback. Fixed a number of them at the public school I went to, with nothing more than a soldering iron & supplemental solder, back in the mid nineties. The same issue that caused display problems on classic macs of their era as well. Hehe, random nostalgia brain-fart

    Do you use cheap generic chinese ebay/amazon cap kits for stuff like this or do you get fancier ones from a trusted component vendor like mouser and digikey? I ordered mouser parts to recap some old Mac power supplies and it quickly ended up over $100 in caps. And computer monitors have even more caps in them!

    JOE CLASSIC< can you use a different flyback transformers that is for a larger CRT screen display or smaller CRT screen display or will this screw up the geometry and XY coordinates?

    • @Megalocade
      @Megalocade Рік тому

      Only if it fits the board, many flybacks different interms of size and pinouts to the chassis, Usually the power the flyback puts out is controlled by the b+ most of the arcade classis i have here cover a wide range of crt tubes from 10" right up to 28" but you have to alter the b+ higher on bigger tubes and less for smaller tubes, plus some board modifications need to be done like addings caps here and there and resistors, or removing caps or resistors etc to accommodate the bigger or smaller tubes.

    • @waynegram8907
      @waynegram8907 Рік тому

      @@Megalocade There are B+ trim pots to adjust the voltage to the flyback. If you use another type of flyback it could alter and change the display graphics XY coordination and geometry? The B+ Voltage doesn't alter or change the graphics XY coordination or geometry, but I think the flyback does which I'm not sure why the flyback alters and changes the XY coordination and geometry of what is being displayed on the CRT tube.

    Don't know if my comment matters or not. But I discovered how to push out a Interlaced signal from a PC to tv using a EDID emulator passthrough. The one that did for me is called Woieyeks, it says 4k on it on ebay. You can push out 1080i, 720i, 600i, 480i. It all comes down to which GPU you have inside your computer. I used this device on two different computers. On my laptop it only pushed out 1080i. On my gaming PC it can push out all Interlaced resolution. Interlaced on a modern TV is possible. I would like to try this on a tube tv like yours if I could ever get one.

      @Sidman723 Рік тому +1

      This is not a rant or complaint, just an observation. I have repaired many dirty dusty devices in my time and probably breathed in a lot of dust. So I learned my lesson. Besides, if you dust and clean things off first it makes it easier to see if a component overheated or shows signs it is about to fail. Happy holidays everyone.
