It’s cool to see more solid AMD laptops pop up now, both for the CPU & the GPU. That aside, I’d be down for Alex & Anthony being the laptop guys for LTT going forward if Linus wants to avoid his conflict of interest regarding his investment in Framework, especially considering how much Alex loves his Dell XPS.
I'm cool with Linus still reviewing laptops that are really cool and don't see why it's an issue honestly. He always gives it like it is regardless. I like when Anthony reviews but I really don't care as much for Alex.
I have the older g14 and it still holds up well. It plays most my games in high or ultra settings without lag. The only downside is it gets really hot, I recommend to anyone to disable the boost and you will get close to the same performance but without melting your desk.
It is also worth mentioning that I have seen 2021 g14 for $1250 USD at best buy. I bought it last year for 1500, and it is a great laptop. It gets a recommend from this random guy on the internet 👍
I got the 2021 G15 with the best-buy only config for around 1.8k, and its now available for 1.54k. It's got a Ryzen 9 5900HS, a 3070, 16 Gigs of ram, a 1tb SSD, and a 165hz 1440p display. It's one of the best values for a laptop right now imo, and the only main downside is the lack of a webcam. If you don't mind giving up an inch of extra width and height in your backpack, I would highly recommend it.
I have the same one bro! And... I just dropped it on my stairs today. It kinda messed the display a little, but do you think it might have took any internal damage regarding hardware? I am a bit shitted on me. Thanks 🙏
I haven't finished the video, but whoever did the graphs in this one did a great job. For some reason I found them much easier to read without pausing the video. Good work!
I use a Lenovo Legion 5 and the one convenience it has over these great laptops is that most of the io comes out of the rear of the laptop. It's hard to let go of that man it's so damn nice.
Since this could be the best option this year in the "my friend/family wants a nice laptop recommendation to also do some gaming" category, I'd love to see a "daily use" follow up video for this laptop - the Best Buy page has several reviews that suggest people are having problems with heat buildup on the laptop surface, fan profile issues, and other driver-related problems. Also some performance numbers for both the 6800 and 6700 gpu options would be super helpful too. Thanks!
As someone who has a 2020 G14 because of the video 2 years ago, I can say it has been quite a good laptop for me. It isn't perfect, but it certainly gets what I need done and is still quite fast. Seeing this almost makes me want the upgrade, but I would just be fine keeping what I have.
@@AA-xk1uv if you're playing games, the GPU also running can cause it to get quite hot and loud (this is for the 2020 model, not sure about the newer ones).
Gaming laptops are getting better and better i just hope the engineers find a solution in future a same level of cooling like desktops . I am a ROG owner and it's powerful but heat a little bit more than a PC
did you try to reduce AMD CPU boost? It's a relatively niche trick I think, but you can enable an option in your registry that lets you turn off AMD boost, which is responsible for like at least 20-30C of additional heat. I did it several months ago and since then, I don't go over 70C CPU temp during gaming or video rendering.
I bought the original one for school so it could blend in with all the mac books while still being distinct enough from the chrome books and the ability to run games such as halo infinite in class is perfect. This laptop is near perfect and they just improved it more. And I out of all the windows laptops I’ve seen at my school 4/6 of them are a variation of the g14
I got the Best Buy model w/o the lid lighting - 6900HS, RX 6700S 8gb, popped a 32gb stick of ram in there for a total of 40gb. Easiest time I’ve ever had upgrading a laptop (documentation says max of 24gb ram but I’ve been running 40 for months now) I use it for gaming, UE5 development, rendering UE5 scenes to video using sequencer, I used it to play VR in my hotel when I had to travel for work (USB-C to DP dongle has to be plugged in to the RH side of the laptop to use dedicated GPU), CAD modeling for 3D printing, Blender modeling etc. The thing is an absolute portable workhorse for me.
@Hell Pepper TV Could you please tell me if I purchase laptop from Walmart can i get insurance for this laptop? I fear in future if damages happen on it
I'm so glad you guys did a review on this laptop! I have the G14 with the 5900HS and RTX 3060 and picked it up for $1199 on sale. I love this thing!! It's not only a great gaming laptop, it's not heavy and has great battery so it's an awesome every day laptop too. When unplugged it auto downclocks and drops to 60hz. And when on battery saver the thing lasts damn near all day! And it tears through all the games I have tried. Seriously an amazing replacement for my long time ThinkPad and hope it lasts me at least another 5+ years
My 2021 5900HS +3070 Zypherus G15 has been AMAZING for gaming; so I'm blown away by this 2022 revision of the G14!!! Bravo Asus y'all have been consistently kicking ass the last couple years so here's hoping you keep that trend strong in the years to come!
I'm really impressed with the cooling solutions that laptop manufacturers have designed. Acer had an interesting design they called "Liquidloop", which was a completely passive cpu cooler by way of routing a massive heat pipe around the entirety of the laptop device. It was utilized in the 2016 Acer Switch Alpha 12. I've been thinking of buying a broken one for the cpu cooler and reusing it in a Gateway laptop out of morbid curiosity.
I miss 18 inch desktop replacement laptops. I absolutely loved my Alienware m18x. I would also love to see an 18 inch laptop with onboard graphics that is super light weight, but you can attach an external video card for when you want to game. That would make it both portable and extremely gaming worthy.
I have the 2021 edition and I absolutely love it!. The cooling is really good, it looks absolutely amazing and the cocnept of lag doesn't exist anymore for me.
@@churro6160 First of all I can put it on silent mode if I'm playing or doing something that doesn't need that much stuff and also, if I have a headset on I. even in turbo mode don't notice anything.
Keep in mind that if you upgrade the RAM, the RAM you can upgrade, you won't be running in dual channel mode, you'll be running in mixed channel mode. How big of an impact that would be to performance? I'd be curious to know how that would play out since half of the larger DIMM will be running in single channel. Also, the little rubber nubbins are a welcome reprieve from stickers. Never had a problem getting them back in, in all of my years of opening laptops.
As of now, mixed channel mode isn't much to worry about, the first 16gb will run in dual channel and last 8gb will run in single, most applications seem to run great with no discernible performance loss. I myself prefer larger desktop replacement laptops in which nothing needs to be soldered.
I got a G14 from 2020 and its still a fastantic Laptop, I got it for light gaming and my college work. even this older model is good enough for me to do professional photo editing.
Thinking of picking this up for when I enter grad school next year. My one shame is I really don’t need it until then, so by the time I buy it it’ll only be a few weeks or months till a newer version is released. Still, a beast of a machine.
Same, I need cuda support for some of my software so can't really use an amd gpu unfortunately. I may have to look at the g15 instead but I really like the g14 form factor...
Risky ploy not having Linus in the thumbnail on a main LTT channel video! I appreciate that though. I wasn’t going to get confused between LTT and Short Circuit etc! Great video btw :)
I get the point if you only game at home, but if you do it in hotels or apartments around the world, never. But even then I don't really agree 100%. Upgradeability of the GPU is not excluded if you buy one with a builtin GPU which you can disable when you need to, you only pay more, but often that comes with a better keyboard, screen or construction as well. It boils down to the rest of the laptop.
@@Jehty_ Because in most flights where you go with hand luggage only you won't be able to fit it, for either size or weight, and most likely would require additional luggage because of regulations, which not only is an additional charge but it is a long wait in the airport as well. These are most short range flights you have for a meeting and a one night stay. So I guess the answer is: for convenience. If you seldom do flights it may not matter much tough.
I’ve had the g14 (2021) with the 2060 for about a year now and it is a beast, it will run nearly everything at near max settings. Not to mention the stellar vr performance you can get out of it.
Having used an Asus laptop as my daily driver for the past 7 months now, playing games and doing office work. I can say that it's okay... Just take care of them and they should be fine. The lack of ports drives me insane at times though, thank god for onboard Bluetooth. Oh btw, they typically make their cases in such a way they can split easily in the middle when servicing, ensure all clips are off the edges, thank me later. :)
my rule is always USB 3.0 on the LEFT side because you can loop the mouse wire around the back of the pc, just saves some space for the mouse on the right(or just have it on both sides)
I would like to see a deeper dive into what thunderbolt devices work (did you try both sites?) and more about USB 4 and Thunderbolt (and the compatibility)
It seems like they got a different version of BIOS on the G14 tested in the video. The public BIOS still doesn't support USB 4 and the manual from ASUS's website also doesn't claim that it has USB 4 support.
Script writers at LTT are so amazing. I know this is a tech channel but I just can't bypass the quality of delivery, with each writer having their own distinct yet consistent style.
Might want to test the ROG Zephyrus M16 2022. i9 12th gen 3070ti 16GB DDR5. I have that one and some benchmarks have shown it to be better but i am interested in seeing what your benchmarks show.
I LOVED the cheeto test, it was hilarious and informative. I would have dismissed this purely for being white otherwise, I didn't think it could be done. Also $2,500 isn't as bad as I expected, I spent that much on a thinkpad in 2008 that was way weaker for the time and died just after a year.
So when I bought my laptop I looked at the old g14, I thought it was going to be AMAZING, then the version I was looking at didn't have a sodimm OR a second nvme slot....and the battery life was ok...but I wanted a 15.6. So i bought the top of the line Lenovo lesion, mostly because I didn't want a gaming laptop, but I wanted a laptop that can game....if that makes sense, I wanted a laptop that works as a laptop because gaming laptops make compromises. I got the Lenovo Lesion 15.6 Ryzen 9 5900HX, 3050 ti, with the 4k panel; put a second 1tb nvme and swapped the 8gb sodimm for a 16gb stick and I'm super happy. It works as a laptop and is very user friendly and it was good gaming performance.
@@-Burb @Tams80 yeah but here’s the thing, I have an i9 3080 rig at home, so the 3050 doesn’t bug me, that being said I can play medium to high setting 60 fps 4k, so it actually does quite well
That is so sick. Glitzing up the inside of the laptop is honestly brilliant. It's like Asus knew reviewers would take it apart and the people who would be recommending it would be the tech nerds who watch these videos and don't want to recommend anything that would be a pain for them to fix later. Great first impression.
Interior appearance reminds me of my old Vaio S14, only not with Ivy Bridge and Kepler. Nice to see an anti-glare screen on it rather than some stupid touchscreen thing. Good luck finding parts for an Asus... I remember the original Zenbook's impossible to replace SSDs that self destructed a couple months after your warranty ends.

I got a G14 back in 2020 during the summer and have only had to replace 1 fan once and that's because of the sheer amount of pet hair that got sucked in. However I have been more careful about where I rest the bottom of the laptop and have not had to make any replacements since. Overall, I was super nervous about replacing it, but it wasn't that hard to do on the model I have. I am happy to see ASUS continuing and expanding repairability of the G14 line.
I had the 2020 G14 and yeah the fans would get really dirty. I opened the laptop up a couple months after owning it to add more ram and ended up cleaning the fans. Made it a habit to check the fans every 2-3 months. Never had a fan fail on me.
Watching this on my 2022 g14, owned since launch. I will say I've had my fair share of issues but I blame the generic ssd and network adapter. Look at the G14 subreddit and you'll know what I mean. Still one hell of a laptop.
About the igpu.. so i have the 2021 model. I had the RTx 3060 disabled and played arma 3 around the clock, easily clocking in 4 hours. After upgrading to Windows 11, that time turned into 45 minutes.
This is a great laptop. My only issue is people are still having issues of it reaching 96*C when doing light or heavy gaming. There are ways to fix it but for people who don’t know what to do or to scared to try will find a bit to hot to game comfortably. I still highly recommend this laptop especially since the subreddit is really amazing but just be weary that you might get one that has heat issues.
Just want to say Hi and Thanks Linus/Framework. Today is my birthday and my Framework laptop arrived today, so that was an awesome birthday surprise :D
Glad to see a video finally remove the fans. Most video just avoid that because the liquid metal. But at 10:10 the graphic seems really bad, hope you will fix it.
Honestly, I wonder if testing out thunderbolt docks with ports on the laptops y'all receive might be a great addition to the site you're already building for cable testing.
Customer service has been a nightmare for them. ASUS have been unwilling to provide the cost to replace the display besides saying it could cost up to $2300 to fix the device. They say they cannot give anything more without seeing the device, even though they must know exactly how much a replacement display costs, the hours to repair and the hourly rate of their repair techs. It just seems as though they are trying to get me to send the device there so I am more likely to approve the repair. Feeling quite guilty recommending this device. Be warned!
Alex, i would have liked to have seen you reassemble the laptop after strip down. It only contains repairable / replaceable parts if you can also put humpty dumpty back together again

That aside, I’d be down for Alex & Anthony being the laptop guys for LTT going forward if Linus wants to avoid his conflict of interest regarding his investment in Framework, especially considering how much Alex loves his Dell XPS.
Riley and Anthony and Alex are the funniest hosts and they are good at reviewing laptops
@@Volshebnik1 why are you trying so hard to get hated?

I'm cool with Linus still reviewing laptops that are really cool and don't see why it's an issue honestly. He always gives it like it is regardless. I like when Anthony reviews but I really don't care as much for Alex.
you mean down?
I have the older g14 and it still holds up well. It plays most my games in high or ultra settings without lag. The only downside is it gets really hot, I recommend to anyone to disable the boost and you will get close to the same performance but without melting your desk.
It is also worth mentioning that I have seen 2021 g14 for $1250 USD at best buy. I bought it last year for 1500, and it is a great laptop. It gets a recommend from this random guy on the internet 👍
Thank you random internet man, I will take this into consideration

It's one of the best values for a laptop right now imo, and the only main downside is the lack of a webcam.
Maybe you should wait for G14 2023 or 2024

did you try to reduce AMD CPU boost? It's a relatively niche trick I think, but you can enable an option in your registry that lets you turn off AMD boost, which is responsible for like at least 20-30C of additional heat. I did it several months ago and since then, I don't go over 70C CPU temp during gaming or video rendering.

Hi may i know th exact model? Thank you
I bought the original one for school so it could blend in with all the mac books while still being distinct enough from the chrome books and the ability to run games such as halo infinite in class is perfect.

Easiest time I’ve ever had upgrading a laptop (documentation says max of 24gb ram but I’ve been running 40 for months now)
I use it for gaming, UE5 development, rendering UE5 scenes to video using sequencer, I used it to play VR in my hotel when I had to travel for work (USB-C to DP dongle has to be plugged in to the RH side of the laptop to use dedicated GPU), CAD modeling for 3D printing, Blender modeling etc. The thing is an absolute portable workhorse for me.

Ok, the design on the vapor chamber is SICK. Kudos to whoever made it and decided to let it happen
I've been waiting a long time to replace my Sony Vaio (2010).

Rog zephyrus runs hot, ltt's ads said "theyll keep you warm"

@@marsovac why wouldn't you travel with your external GPU?
Just take one less pair of shoes and instead put a GPU in your luggage.

How much did it cost?

I LOVED the cheeto test, it was hilarious and informative. I would have dismissed this purely for being white otherwise, I didn't think it could be done.

Today is my birthday and my Framework laptop arrived today, so that was an awesome birthday surprise :D

when i was gonna watch this vid i saw a ad of pulseway the ad that linus is narrating
Recommended to someone based off this video. Their display made it one month after the 12 month warranty before being completely dead.
Be warned!
I just got the previous version, and it has blown me again every day that I use it
