I appreciate this video telling of the change. I just received my 9800 and decided to look around UA-cam for information and found this video. I do not know yet if mine has 220 on it but if it does, I am glad that the change was made. This means I can crossband from 220 to 10 in my area where there is a lack of 220 use and will have less chance of someone wanting to use my setup. I can also do the same for 6m to 220. I will be promoting the three less used bands. If anything, I would like to see 2m changed with 440. There is a large number of radios available for use on 2m with many with 70cm for a dual band. Just think of it, you can crossband on 220 around the house or the neighborhood and work 29.6 and have another radio for just 2m/70cm. The same could be done with 6m. I have been to Texas and I know there are 6m repeaters around not to mention simplex work when the band opens up. I look at this radio as a supplement to my other radio equipment. Heck, if I read it correctly, you could crossband from 50.3, the lowest you can go on 6m using FM onto 29.6. This would mean that I could monitor 29.6 while transmitting on 50.3 and possibly hear myself during an opening. Here in Arizona, I know that the 6m band can open up into Texas and Missouri on FM. I also know that my friends in CA. can work your area on 6m FM from past experience. This unique radio is something to grab ahold of in my opinion. Can't wait to check mine and see if it works on 220. If it doesn't, I'd consider trading yours for mine. I'd be disappointed if it doesn't work on 220. I didn't buy mine for the 440 band. Again, I appreciate your making the video and alerting me to something I did not know about. To me this is a pleasant surprise. N7NGM

there are two versions of the th 98-00 one has 2,6,10,440 and the other one is 2,6,10,220.i have agree with you wish they got rid 6 or 10 meters instead of 440.and put 220.

I'm a 220 fan as well and I also think it's a mistake to omit 440 from this radio just to make way for 220 MHz. Although I use 440 a lot for both repeater and simplex communication, I also routinely use the 440 band to cross-band repeat over to, as there are some types of control data you're not supposed to use the 144 band for, which means you HAVE to use the 440 band for this purpose. If they really felt the need to include the 220 band then they should have added it to the existing bands and made it a five-band transceiver. If this wasn't possible, then why not simply change the model number of the 440-less version and market BOTH models rather than completely drop 440 altogether? I don't get this move either...

I've been interested in the 10m/6m/2m/70cm version and am afraid that they'd ship me one of these (I want 10m but would really hate to lose 440, which is the most common band around here). Thanks for the honest assessment.

you should show the radio running scan mode , i think the 220 model of this radio is for guys wanting a second radio in the shack.... looking to pick up a new band ( 220 ) with out having to buy a 220 only radio....
im looking at this model to replace my kenwood tm-742 that has no computer programming interface....
i'm not plugging in 50 more repeaters by hand ever again!
    I would like to see this unit scan 11 meters AM , 10fm , 6 fm ,
and toss in the 6 m ssb channels so we know the band might be open.
i larger problem will be geting a antenna for this radio , hard to find one antenna that covers the 4 bands...
you will need a duplexer or two i think and more then one antenna.

On the old plus model, is there a way to open RX to receive the entire 29 MHz to 950 MHz ?
Or part of the range ?
    More than just 29-33 50-54 108-174 350-512. 750-950 ?

@@HamRadio2 is it full from 28 to 950, or just the ranges on the box ?
If it is just the ranges on the box, is there a way to open up the full range from 174 to 350 and 512 to 750 ?
It would be nice if I could receive the 222 band and the 500 & 600 band
The FCC sold the 600 band for LMR and the 500 band, at least the bottom of it, is already for LMR and I heard they were selling off the rest for LMR.
I have a few scanners that cover 25 to 950, but they don't have the spacing. The 5,6.25, 10, 12.5 are not in the older scanners
The 600 band is supposed to be 3.125 spaced Ultra Narrow FM
Back in the 80s and 90s there were military institutions that used that spacing and I think the Icom ham radio with VFO and SSB could tune their fire departments and security, but no scanner picked up those frequencies.
It would be nice to have a mobile radio that could
I like to monitor the PTC and ATCS
I am thinking I could put a discriminator tap on this radio and use it to log the data as I travel.
It is a long shot, but if I could do everything with one radio I would like to.
      Thanks

Around here most of 440 is digital -- but 220 is mostly FM
So makes sense ,I'm figuring that's common if they did that .
For a fm only good ...
10 mtrs picking up and heard 10 fm on receiver ..
I'm actually glad they got rid of a
Mostly digital band 440 that's useless on a fm rig

@@denised3157 make sure the power supply is at least 30 amps at 13.8 volts, otherwise it will "neuter" the radio's wattage output on transmit not giving you the full rated output. Also you might want to ditch the "cheesy" plastic fuse holders and replace them with sturdier car audio amplifier fuse holders, I've found the plastic fuse holders that come on mobile radio wiring harnesses can fail because they aren't very secure.

I would buy this today if it could do digital modes. It does ALL the bands where US Technicians Licensees are allowed to use voice. Does it at 50 watts which is 150% more powerful than the Xiegu g90, which is what I am probably going to buy. AND its $200 less. Then only downsides for me is:
#1 no built in antenna tuner, which adds additional cost.
    #2 no data modes.
    #3 no CW capability.
I am a former Novice that let my license expire so I started out sending and reading CW.

    Hi :)
I own one of these , but its says on the box...29/50/144/430 + 108 AM airband. i dont think its got SSb... to bad.. i like this radio, its my first radio, and im using it to lern. but i want SSb and Cw also... Here in my country nobody uses the walkie talkie anymore...the 11 meter... maybe a few, just for fun. but 2meter is popular, and i want to get into Sota, but then the SSb is used.... so this radio is like... good for fun, but not exelent for everything... im no millionair, so i have to take what i can afford.

You really prefer 440 over 220? Just think about which bands are threatened more by rules changes. You obviously weren't around in 1988 like I was when the FCC took away 220-222 mHz from Amateurs. The more 1-1/4 meter radios the better regardless of the changes the radio manufacturers have to make to make it possible. We amateurs as a group need to make sure that further infringements do not occur. We lost 220-222 mHz solely because UPS wanted those frequencies for comms, just look it up. Novice operators even had voice privileges in the 1980's on the 220 band. That was back in the days when a ham had to work for a license, unlike memorizing the answers for a test today. The harder you have to work for something, the more you covet it.

It has been a while since I recorded this video, so I would have to go back and look at what you are referring to - but no... I do not prefer any band over 220, actually. I would like to see many more options for 220 radios and products.
