Unknown Kind (2007)

Track 2 off the new FSU Percussion Ensemble recording, "The Percustary Insectarium" (2019), composed by David Skidmore.
David was kind enough to compose this opener for my 2007 Carnegie Hall solo recital. I even gave him a list of what instruments would be on the truck for the tour (and therefore what he could write for), and he produced this amazing quintet. Not many composers who would agree to something like that, and I have always been appreciative of David’s giving spirit and prodigious talents. I had forgotten just how difficult the piece is until we programmed it for this recording! Special kudos to my students for making this fly-and fly it does.-JP
