Honestly it's a really unscientific view for anyone to take that they just "know better" with confidence in spite of all evidence. I think it's important that we all remain as humble and objective as possible, always be ready to "check ourselves" when we're feeling overly confident about something, and keep the Dunning-Kruger effect in mind.

@@TheRealSkeletor The frustrating thing (not necessarily my experience with this of course, but a bunch of other medical and safety things) is how hard it often is to find good evidence in the first place. Many people (myself included) don't have the expertise to actually draw conclusions from a pile of research papers and studies, or have the time to try. And that's assuming that there even are accurate studies on the topic available.
On the one hand, its amazing how much medical advancement we have in the modern era. On the other, it's astounding how little we actually agree on a huge number of seemingly very straightforward to test topics. And how much discourse there is on topics that have been pretty unilaterally proven already.

I dropped out of a chemical engineering program in 1997. Later on I went back to school with a bunch of transfer credit and slammed four years worth of mining engineering out in four semesters. I've been out of that school now for almost 20 years and out of Colorado School of Mines since 1997. I am hitting the category of "very successful" (income next year should be over 200K) in the mining industry I still have nightmares about the Chem E program. Not finishing that degree feels like a huge failure to me despite my success in engineering, including direct application of stuff that I learned in that Chem E program. On a side note, despite having a degree, I have never been asked by an employer to provide a transcript or a copy of my diploma.

Xyla, I am someone who has seen a few of your videos and UA-cam put this one up on my “wall” to see. I am an Ob/Gyn doctor and I am so sorry you had to go thought this mess. Your doctors really don't know what they are doing. It is not difficult to become a physician, it is more difficult to really understand human physiology and subsequently pathophysiology. Many doctors understand the basics and couldn’t or didn’t process your symptoms and you have suffered so much. It pains me to hear of stories like yours and unfortunately, I hear them time and time again especially with pelvic pain. Yes, your symptoms could have been managed differently and properly with a change of medications that would not have resulted in you becoming so depressed. It is well known in the OBGYN community that progestins like the one in your IUD can have serious mood changes and your doctors should have LISTENED to you and taken appropriate action. So many doctors are quick to dismiss symptoms and that troubles me so much. Unfortunately, it is hard to find good doctors who LISTEN and UNDERSTAND. We go to Medical School so we can take care of the whole person, not just one part of the body we specialize in. I wish you were based in New York so I could have taken care of you.

I respect doctor's opinion , but it is recommended to ask 2nd and 3rd opinion and continue to push and ask if have doubts.

There needs to be a whole lot more medical studies of women's health that are not based on Victorian ideas of "normal". Even little things like BMI need to be tossed out a window. i have a female love who literally her entire normal BMI is muscle and weight for her height (Scottish Japanese mix). you add in her bones and a normal bit of fat and they declare that she is over weight. This is a woman that gains muscle mass just walking by a gym.

Xyla, thank you for speaking openly and honestly about your experience, it takes an incredible amount of bravery to open yourself up to strangers like this.
A former partner had an IUD fitted and her entire demeanour changed; she went from being happy, caring & whip-smart to emotionally cold, spiteful & cruel.
Thankfully she spoke with her doctor, relaying my and others concerns about her personality changes, had the IUD removed, and began returning to the wonderful person she was.
Her account was that during the time she had the IUD, inwardly she felt nothing, felt empty and my and others attempts to help were taken as being hurtful and critical.
To everyone out there, please look out for your partners, friends and family's mental health, it's ok to not be ok and never hesitate in asking for help. ❤

Also, on point w.r.t. the FAA and mental health. Absolutely boggles the mind that they seem to prefer untreated or self-treated pilots instead of diagnosed and managed conditions.

Thank you for being strong enough to speak out. Ten years ago I survived Toxic Shock Syndrome and my Dr told me that most modern cases are like mine: caused by a brand new tampon, not forgetting one in. But because it's rare, like what happened to you, no one really talks about it or bothers researching it. It can feel so lonely to be that statistical unlikelihood, and I know the exhaustion of making ourselves feel whole again makes it hard to have the energy to talk about it. I'm proud of you and grateful you're here to share your story.

I have to admit that knowing about this issue with IUD's was something I was unaware of, so just the fact that you are mentioning this online is a positive thing. I went from being pretty much the happiest I had ever been into really depressed over about 6 months in my Thirties and it all goes pear-shaped so fast! What REALLY helps is recognising it in yourself because until you see it in yourself and realise the changes are needed, no-one can really tell you that. This video seems like a step in that direction, so it is a positive step and it hopefully means things are getting more positive for you. Find small things that make you happy, mine is a nice coffee and cheese and crackers and I do this every day, as my brain is now conditioned to gain a small dose of happiness every time I eat or drink this stuff - I also know it is cheap and it means that even when I am financially wrecked, i should be able to do it. Don't feel guilt about not posting, it is FAR more important to help yourself and we are fans, so we aren't going anywhere. Take your time, you don't need to fake it, just take time and be there for you, if you do that then you will eventually be there for us again. Am in my Fifties now and I have learnt one thing - life is always a bit of a bugger and the trick is to realise that sometimes it will all go wrong and that builds resilience in a person and resilience can help you more than you know.

I take your word about this immediately. I have seen women go from happy, bubbly, engaging, to depressed, unpleasant, etc. Hormonal birth control is in my opinion, from my experience, a nightmare for many, and it is high time we find different solutions. Male contraceptives included. Xyla, I wish you all the best. You're an amazing person and content creator.

    • @ww-pw6di

Absolutely correct and the fact that research and development into male contraceptives is consistently defunded or suppressed despite not coming with even remotely the same kind of hormonal barrage as women's contraceptives is nothing short of heinous. Every single male friend that I've talked about this subject to would happily take and use a pill, implant or whatever form contraceptive if it was reversible.
It's especially fucked up because the mechanisms female contraceptives work with can result in permanent dysfunction of the reproductive system shortening the already very short span of window for women to have children. Never mind the significant body of research that shows exactly how damaging they are to the people who take them.

Unfortunately, "Don't ever feel not good enough" is easy to say. But hormones don't listen to your brain. Intellectually, I have to believe she does know she's good. But when hormones come calling, rationalization and logic can go out the window. Everyone has (or should have!) a little self-doubt. That's one of the factors that drives self improvement. If you're not questioning things, you're accepting the status quo. It's when that self doubt or questioning your worth goes off the rails that people's lives start crashing and some start looking at "alternatives" (not gonna use the 's' word, don't need the Artificial Stupidity flagging posts). I completely agree with the rest of your comment. (disclaimer: I'm part of the male % here).

Wow... I just found your tear drop video and absolutely fell in love with you, your project and your talent and energy so much that I started looking at your channel and found this. I am so SO glad that you found the courage and emotional, medical and financial support to hang on through all of this horrible, terrifying chasm you've endured. I'm absolutely FURIOUS with your GYN. Honestly, they are literally NOT fit to be in practice... Their negligence and failure to take you seriously almost cost you your life. This is a clear case of malpractice, particularly given that you had experienced the same thing when the first IUD was installed. Thank god you had a decent GP who actually listened to and took you seriously. I am grateful you're still with us. You make more of a difference than you know just being here and being you.
Honestly, YOU. ARE. AMAZING. Truly. I can't believe you're only 26 years old and doing all that you're doing. I'm 62 and was doing a lot of the same things as you at your age. Flying, sky diving, going on adventures, etc. But damn girl...not even close to what you've been up to! Entrepreneur in your early 20's? TED Talk?? DAMN!!! YOU are seriously fricken amazing! I know from personal experience that you feel what you feel when you feel it, so telling someone not to feel a certain way is dumb. But with a bit more life experience under my belt, maybe that qualifies me to just say that you are absolutely enough, you are absolutely worthy, and you are just perfect the way you are...AND the way you not! No apology necessary for being YOU. I've never met you and I love and respect you immensely. I love your courage to persevere, your amazing energy and passion, and I love you for unapologetically being you, being your remarkable self and absolutely going for it in your life in all your glory. I love you for SHARING all of this deeply personal stuff that's nobody's business, on UA-cam no less, so that other women (and men) can learn about this and know that it's real and they're not crazy if it happens to them. So that they might have the courage to hang on too. I had a very dear friend about your age who was also absolutely amazing. And she too fell into a hole, but she didn't reach out to get the support she needed and she ended her life. It's absolutely tragic. I still can't believe that she's gone... I WISH she had seen this courageous video before she left...💔
So thank you for your courage and for sharing. I'm totally rooting for you. Hang in there and whatever you do, find another form of birth control that won't wreck you when this IUD runs out of gas. 😘

We love your videos and will be there when you release them, wether it took a week or a month or whatever time to make a video happen. Second: I learned a lot - I had no idea that an IUD could have such detrimental effects despite the fact that I attend to suicidal patients relatively frequently as a paramedic. Third: While I get that it is a difficult step to make this video especially because of your audience your many male viewers might actually be a very good group of people to talk to about this. Most of us know nothing about the effects of birth control - so learning about this is good - but more than a few of us know about depression and suicidal thoughts, so as I think the comment section already shows many here "get it". I wish you strength and a full recovery!

I'm so glad you posted this I am a husband and father. My wife and daughters have dealt with Drs who do not believe them or take them seriously. I have seen how women's medical care is worse than men's medical care in so many ways. It's important for women and men to know it's ok to get a second and even third opinion if they aren't getting the care they need. I'm glad you are doing better than you were and I hope you continue feeling better. I'm rooting for you.

Xyla, the fact that you are here, and have the strength and fortitude to openly discuss this nightmarish saga, is both amazing and appreciated by so many people that may be going through similar/relatable episodes in their own lives. Be well, and know there are so many people out there that not only support and care about you, but others that may find themselves in similar circumstances. Keep doing what you do!

I appreciate your open and frank sharing of your experience and feelings. I am a retired nurse and it is always disheartening to hear people relate their experience with health care providers who who don't listen to their truthful accounts of their presenting problems.

Awesome video.. You will never know the number of people you just helped. People often believe doctors are always right, but they are human and can be wrong, and you need to listen to your own body. Keep getting better, and looking forward to your next videos

I can say that as a male I do very much believe you when you said that the birth control messed you up emotionally. I know how hard depression is and how hard it is to keep living because I have been there. I want to say thank you for making this video. I am really passionate about bringing awareness to all forms of mental illness and to get it more expedited in the world. So I want to say a huge thank you for making it and being open about your struggles. We need more people on the internet talking about it.

Very sorry you went through that. You raised one of the biggest questions I have around these issues - why is belief even necessary? We have character changes from stress, elation, loss, and more - why is somebody's experience even a question? I'm personally on a shopping list of ADs and AAs, I'm definitely a different person when certain ones run out. It's a ridiculous situation that we question these things. Glad you found the root cause, and remember to be kind to yourself.

I had a year where I faked being okay at work, would get home and just lie down and escape onto my laptop. If there wasn't work I would be locked in my house, and could go a week or two without human contact outside the short work related things, so I can empathise with some of what's going on. Im still working through it, but every day is a testament to how resilient we are and another battle that we've won! And although mundane, I consider it just as badass as any project I've worked on, and I hope you do too! You're life, health and well being is the most important thing here, so I hope you can take it a bit easy on yourself, and I am keen for what you have in stall for us, regardless of how long it takes :)

I can relate to your experience, but unlike you, am not past it yet. For whatever reasons it is easy for me to regress and fall back to not leaving the house except for work and buying food.

@@cerealport2726 I ended up having to leave my job at the time and my boss pulled me aside and mentioned that he had picked up that I was having trouble with anxiety (not the depression, I was able to cover that up) and took me out for lunch and just straight up said, one of his wishes was for me to go to therapy, which I took seriously and did. It took a lot of work and some medications, and moving back with my parents but I got through the worst of it. It sucks as advice as its not always applicable or what people want to do, but thats what worked for me. I still am not fully done, but am no longer suicidal or as house bound as I was.

Thank you for talking about this, Xyla. I'm so sorry you have struggled so hard with this. Please be kind to yourself with the guilt about what content you've created during all of this. That you are still here with us is so very much more important than how often you put out content, or what content you put out when the chemicals in your body are weighing you down. That you're still here to share all the creativity and energy and zeal you have for what you do, once you get to the other side of this, is SO very much more important.
You are human. Sometimes you need time. Sometimes you need to step back. Sometimes you need to start over. Sometimes you need to drop everything and put yourself back together so you can come back at it again. You will take everything you've learned and everything you've built from each one of those times and bring it forward with you.
I went through a lot of mental and physical health problems when I was on depo provera about 15 years ago, and it was hell. I know just what you mean about people not taking you seriously and brushing off side effects. It's incredibly frustrating, and the medical community needs to do better.
Thank you for making people aware, and thank you for sticking with us. You are an amazing person, and such an inspiration. You can be that and still be human, still have dark difficult times and things you struggle through. That doesn't make you less amazing or less inspiring. 💜Take your time, we'll be here.
Super excited to see the sailboat! That's something my wife and I have always wanted to do! She has been obsessed with sailing and everything to do with it since she was a kid, and has wanted her own sailboat forever. We've had a chance to do uprigging on a tall ship together, and do a little volunteer work helping crew, but that's the closest she's gotten. Someday! It'll be fun to watch your build.

I’m so pleased for you that you are in a place where you are able to share. I’ve had my fair share of mental issues, and have lost businesses and marriages because of it. Obviously you and you alone can know what you have been going through, though it looks like there is a light that you are working towards, which is great! do not worry - your videos, however sporadic, light up my feed, and I the rest of your community will be here whenever you feel ready to post. Take care of beautiful you. We love you.

Thanks for sharing this with us Xyla. And so sorry you had to go through this not once but twice. As a woman on birth control it’s good to hear other people’s stories about their experiences. This is something I didn’t even know could happen so knowing it is possible leaves me better informed. Many people have gone through and struggle with mental health issues, me included so it’s great to hear people opening up about it. I’m glad your doctor is helping you. My doctor is great too, thank God for the good ones! Go you for being brave and sharing! You’re an inspiration to many people especially girls and women!🎉❤
