as long as your duplicate is an instance and you have reflection enabled it should work fine. Notice that it only works with changes done in vertex,edge,and face mode. scaling,moving the whole object in object mode will only work on one side.

to select faces or edges or verts just hold down right click for the options to appear. to make the cube look like a sphere just press 3 for subdivision mode.
You can try to select all the outer edges and snap them to the middle of the grid. Select the edges. Look at the top right corner of the screen there are 3 squares where you can type a number for x,y,z. type 0 for x to snap the edges to the center. Then duplicate special and enable reflection. In the end I will delete the duplicated side of the model and just do a final mirror object. It is important to do it this way, but is not absolutely crucial. You can ignore it and work only with one side.
best option would be to get a mouse with middle mouse button. I personally prefer to use a mouse as I find using the trackpad for this type of thing painful. I think there is away to change the settings to work better on a trackpad, a google search would probably help you out.
You mean move the whole object? the whole object will move which is why at this point you need to work on edges/verts/faces. If you mean the edges will still move then try to enable and disable reflection, sometimes that fixes it. that could mean the outer edges are not exactly in the center of the grid. If you want the box to appear in the middle from the start, when you go to create-polygon primitives, look all the way down and disable interactive creation.
Make sure to click on the word "Image center x" and then hold down middle mouse button and drag to move the image. If that doesn't work just type the numbers on the Image Center x manually. I don't really know the differences between the PC and Mac version because I have only used the PC version. Hope this helps
If it's inserting more then one edge loop then click on the edge loop options box. Set the number to 1. I don't know what you mean by the whole body changes. May have something to do with the geometry of your model.
Make sure not to scale/move/rotate in object mode as this will cause a gap. Work with edge/face/vertex. select the edges that create the gap, at the top of the screen there is an area where you can type a value for x,y,z. Type 0 on x and press enter, this should fix the gap. If it doesn't try typing 0 on a different axis. This will only work if you created your initial object in the origin of the grid.
I don't know if I understand your question. What do I use for what? Maya can be used for modeling, rigging, animation, rendering. Zbrush or photoshop can be used for texturing. Most production pipelines render in layers so they use software like after effects to put everything together and add effects or make changes as needed.
I am not a real expert in animation so I am probably not the best person to make a video on how to animate. There are probably others who have great videos on youtube. Good luck.

Siempre que uses extruir en las caras del frente abra una extra cara extruida en medio la cual tienes que borrar siempre que uses extruir en caras frente o atras que estan en medio.

I know it can make the universe explode so I wouldn't try it if I were you. In all seriousness, is totally fine as long as you know you will smooth your model at a later stage, if you are not then don't use subdiv mode. It obviously is a good idea to check back at how the low poly is looking as you are working in subdi mode.
are they completely white without anything? Sounds like it could be an issue with maya. Just try to restart maya. If you have image planes maybe just try to zoom out. If nothing works try changing view-ports by clicking the icons on the left side of the screen.
in order for that to work you have to make sure that you created the model in the origin point ( center of grid) or move the model there. The edge loop in the middle should be in the center of the grid. When you type 0 if the edges move radically to a direction that means that probably your model is not placed in the middle. Maya? I haven't used blender in a really long time so I don't know what is like right now, I assume it's pretty good. I don't know which is easier to use because I barely used blender a long time ago. There is a free student version of maya for students. You can also buy it for around 3 thousand dollars.
I don't think I understand exactly what the question is. What do you mean by catch top face? When you select a face on one side of the model it should visually look like the same face should be selected on the other side of the model as well. Could you specify the time frame in the video where you are stuck. Do you mean the manipulator handles don't show? If that is the case it could be because they are too small to see to change the size of the manipulator handle use + or - on the keyboard.

I have tried to snap the edges by typing 0 in the x menu on top of my screen but all in vain because instead of snapping the edges, the edges just move outside.

so when you select the faces does it mirror to the other side? whatever you do to one side happens to the other. Make sure the duplicate is set to instance and also make sure it is set in the correct axis in case you are not working with the same axis I was working on. Let me know if that helps.
that has never happened to me. That's weird. Try to pen and closing maya, maybe restarting computer. I am not sure what the problem could be. Did you save different versions of the model or just one? If you have more versions of the model try opening an older one and see if the problem is there as well. I really don't know what the problem is. I apologize for that.

usually when reflection refuses to work I enable/disable it multiple times or sometimes have to restart maya. As long as the edges meet exactly in the middle then it should work fine.
That doesn't sound right. You should be able to in either drag or marquee. If it doesn't work just restart maya, if nothing works you will have to use marquee.
Hey man, I have a question, so I was done for the night last night, I saved my work, closed it, etc. And now today when I open it I cant do anything to the model. When I select only a certain part of it, the entire thing is selected. If I try to do faces nothing happens, try to insert and edge loop it wont let me click on the edges. Help?
I need help. the seam keeps coming apart when i adjust the edges there. I have toggled the 'preserve seam' on and off and for some of the lines it works but for others it dosnt. what do I do??

As soon as I start to manipulate the mirrored body, I notice an immediate "gap" between the two sides of the dinosaur. This has caused me some problems down the line when extrude the neck as the polygons are not connected at some points. Is there a way to avoid gaps, or am I doing something wrong when I scale/move/rotate?
Hmm yeah okay thx the duplicate is working fine, but i could still move the object at 6:00 i also have preserve seam checked. Maybe there is a key to lock that objects? Another issue is that the box is not in the middle i have to try it by my own to bring it in the middle is this correct? thx for your fast help!

Well, what can I say. Just don't rush it, patience is key. Just post your questions and I ( and other users) will try to answer. Also, if you are fairly new to Maya I would suggest to start to model more simple objects like props and once you get more familiar with the tools you can start with characters.

I just clicked once on one edge and hold down shift and selected the other one. Double clicking an edge will select a whole edge loop.

It is probably ok. I started using maya 2011 so I am not sure if 2009 has all the tools, but chances are it probably does.

in the create menu - polygon primitives - look all the way at the bottom of the menu and make sure that interactive creation is not checked.
are you talking about the poly count display? If you want to be able to see that just go to display - heads up display - and enable poly count.

making a velociraptor is similar to making this dinosaur. I think the mac a and pc versions of maya are the same except for some keyboard shortcuts.

That doesn't sound right. You should be able to in either drag or marquee. If it doesn't work just restart maya, if nothing works you will have to use marquee.

edge loop keeps adding lines so to stop it, you need to click on another tool like move or resize and it will get off the edge loop select
W - Move
E - Rotate
R- Scale
did you try importing it again. It should work fine, maybe you're looking at it from a back view.

I did a tutorial a while back on how to do hair with transparency maps, this is for that tutorial. Should be able to find it in my channel.
When i dublicate special, the object doesnt move next to it, it just stays under it. So it works just like copy of the object. (i choose instant)
