GIMP is amazing - why pay a fortune, honestly the GIMP tutors are the best.. so many photoshop tutors, but how can most of us afford that when we're not pro's?
Even if you are a pro, why would you give up control over your own work to another company? Use software that lets you retain the ability to do what you like with your own work.
My favourite new Gimp ability is rarely used by anyone; the ability to adjust the opacity of the adjustment preview so that you can see what's underneath before finalizing. So for example, with the scale/perspective/etc... to fit the moose into the screen, you could adjust the preview transparency to see the screen beneath in order to know when to stop adjusting.
I set my preferences in Gimp to add an alpha channel to any image I am opening in Gimp. I found that I normally added an aplha channel anyhow, so this saves me having to do it for each image manually
really helpful, I wanted to change a photo of a tv screen that is angled in such a way I didn't understand how to paste a picture on it, and now I know how to. thanks a lot. :)
For the history issue - before I start I always duplicate my base image and then just hide it - I can always then copy and paste a section off the original if I need to "revert" a section of the image. Same thing, just prepping for the worst before it invariably happens :D. Very helpful video! Thanks :)
Thanks for sharing the tip! That's usually a good habit to get into - especially when you know you're making changes to the base image. The good news is GIMP is adding auto-save on crashes in 2.10 and also adding adjustment layers in 3.2 - so they are making strides for saving work and non-destructive editing. Thanks for watching!
thank you for mentioning the 'non select' after doing something in the selection mode. For the last several years I could never get rid of the 'marching ants'. thank you. p.s. teaching suits you.
CTRL key while placing guide by draging the ruler will let you add Sample Points, open the corresponding dialog and now you can reference sample colors on the composition.
I just downloaded gimp a few days ago and I'm blown away by the quality and the features it has for a free program. I just couldn't justify a "subscription" to adobe for photoshop. The people at adobe must be mad that there is such a quality free alternative to ps.
This was excellent. I've been using GIMP to create my last couple of UA-cam thumbnails. It's really helped make my thumbnails look more polished. Your tips will definitely come in handy. Just subbed
Thanks the locking tool will be useful, I've used GIMP for a while now & have learnt something new about the clone tool. I've always imported the original image in as a new layer & then cloned from that if i need to rectify something but that only works if the work piece is the same size, going back through the history n exporting will allow any editing/resizing to be the same 👍
You sir, are far from mistaken, and in fact are quite informed. Only few, if any, will understand the reference - and for the legendary comment, I thank you.
5:03 So the final application of the transformation is destructive -- it replaces the original image. This is the kind of thing that would have me reaching for Inkscape, where I can do non-destructive compositing of images.
For vector objects - yes, Inkscape would allow you to non-destructively resize an object. But, whenever a raster-based image is used, there will always be quality loss no matter what program you are using.
Thank you! Very nice features that I didn't know, even I am a long-term user of GIMP (since version 0.82 aprox). I'm looking forward for GIMP v. 2.10. Thanks again.
Hmm - I'm assuming you're referring to the unerase feature? It could be that Linux uses a different shortcut key for the feature, or perhaps it is a bug.
Thanks, the sample merged option will help me as i create borders for pics i include in my vids, before i had to Alpha to selection the orig pic after growing the selection & filling with colour, then clear the centre of the layer to create a border, now it just fills the border area I'm trying to create, If that makes sense 😶👍
@@DaviesMediaDesign Hi, just had to come back to this vid because i couldn't get the sample merged to work, it was just filling in the whole layer, Worked it out tho, i have to actually use the bucket fill tool to fill in the area i wanted, I've got so used to just dragging n dropping the colours in that i was - selecting the bucket tool, clicking sample merged & then dragging the colour in, Doh!! 🙃 Thanks again
super tool !! much needed !! I am proficent with photoshop but I am learning linux mint as a tribute to Linus trovalds...plus I want to get off the spy-machine of windows and google.
If you're not already aware of more great GIMP filters available, GOOGLE, G'MIC which will give a group of over 400 additional filters other than those in the program. THESE are AWESOME & possibly too advanced for many users but they're fun to play with & each filter has it's own additional adjustments but beware, once you see these & start using them, time could become an issue because there are so many filters & variations of each that you may not be able to decide which to use for your specific project needs. Hope those who download them enjoy!
Rather than wondering if you can afford it, think about the real cost as rate of return on your investment. If you're not a commercial photographer then your return in paying for photoshop is likely zero. Whereas if you're a dad maybe spending ten dollars a month on your kid's classes is a better investment. Gimp having zero cost means you're not losing anything. Why pay money for zero rate of return? This is relevant for Ps as its a subscription and so a perpetual liability and not a one off cost which you could justify as a one and done fun time. A lifetime liability with no compensation is imho impossible to justify, when there are good free alternatives. Its like Office 365 for personal use: selling commercial licensing to consumer markets, why?
@@ironmantooltime "Its like Office 365 for personal use: selling commercial licensing to consumer markets, why?" Especially when there's LibreOffice. I will admit that Excel is better than LibreOffice Calc, if you need advanced expressions. But for the other apps, I'll stay with LO.
Hi when I try to layer photos the photo I want on top of the other has scaled too large (like zoomed in) and I can’t pick out what I want from the photo. Hope that makes sense. Do you know how I can make this work ?
In this History Brush trick you do not need to export and import the base image you want to use for restoration. Just click on the image you want in "Undo History" and use the "Ctrl + D" keys, it is much faster. Do the test.
Hi. Please advise how I would change the nail colour on a persons hand to match a coloured ring they are wearing. I would be soooo grateful as it's sending me doo-lally!
Depending on the shape of the nail, you can use one of the drawing tools, for a nail, likely the ellipse tool to encircle the nail & then use the bucket fill tool to fill with whatever color you want.
reason why the black ellipse does not fully fill with red and leaves some remnants is probably because when you did the ellipse select you had feather edges.
Not usually - if you download GIMP 2.10.0-RC1 it should show up on your computer as GIMP 2.10. If you are on Windows, just use the search feature next to the start menu and type "GIMP." It should show up there. If on a Mac, go to your Applications section and it should be there. If you are still having issues, let me know.
You may just need to right click on the image layer and click on the "Add Alpha Channel" option near the bottom. That adds transparency to the image. If you want to save the final image with the transparency, then you need to save it as a PNG as JPEGs don't contain transparency.
Can someone please help? I'm trying to install Gmic on Gimp 2.10.14 Everytime I do this, I end up with an old version of Gimp and then I have to uninstall and get a bigger headache!

Hey Angus, was it worth the change? Lemme know.
How to I alter the size of brushes in the preview dialog box. I cannot see them to pick which one I want. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Shapes including the ability to add arrows quick and easily will make GIMP a lot more useful. It is surprising this feature is not available!

I have a Skillshare class on how to create collages in GIMP. Sounds like what you’re looking for.

Anyone else think it's funny how all the adverts of UA-cam videos about GIMP are Photoshop? 😂
16:51 Please, always best to use a lossless format (e.g. PNG) rather than JPEG, particularly if you intend to do further work on the image.
But isnt JPEG smaller and more suitable for web use ?
