A good way to combine pronation/wrist/grip training I have found is to close a gripper under your max( say 2.0) and keep it closed while you train pronation rotation with a band hooked to the top of the gripper spring. You will definitely feel this after 30 or more reps!

I agree 100%. The main people who says that grippers don't work are people focused on strap armwrestling... And it also makes your forearm huge. Plus you can use a low weight like a 60 pound gripper, bend your wrist and close it, and it will work a very specific part of your forearm and lengthen your tendons a bit
And I don't know about you Ryan, but since I started doing grippers, my hands bigger, my fingers are fatter, and my forearm / wrist is also bigger... So Rob, your wrong! Your wrist does grow... My watch doesn't fit anymore
This, closing grippers with your wrist bent as much as possible. I recommend starting with a light gripper and in a straight wrist position, close the gripper then bend the wrist and hold the grip. And work it up from there.
Paul knight has the best video of how to set a gripper I have seen. Technique makes a huge difference, I have been training for over a year with them. Exited to see your progress✊🏻

Even if you think it doesn't translate and it's not worth training with grippers, one thing is for sure: they're a measure of your general fatigue, CNS activation and ability to generate force, hold on to things, especially since muscle irradiation often makes the fingers empower the rest of your arm muscles and vice-versa. Get your baseline on a "good day" and then when you feel weak or when you wanna see how much you've progressed in terms of general strength, go and compare to your baseline, it'll always be pretty accurate. Good stuff. Now I have to look into this setup business. I always just grab and squeeze. I have an adjustable gripper with a dial that changes the angle of the spring.
2.5 for 5 reps left and right. Occasionally I can close a 3 with the right. Currently 215lb. I don't arm wrestle, but I am a fan of the sport.

I got the #1 and #2 about 2 weeks ago. I'm 6'2 145lbs so pretty damn skinny guy. I was able to close the #1 first try, but I am about an eighth of an inch from the #2 on my best attempt. I do have quite a bit of arm wrestling training,but it has been about 6 years since I was serious about it.
getting the set properly is a huge factor of whether or not you will be able to close a gripper. I can close the 3.5 from parallel set but would struggle to close a 3 with the way he set it. Grippers also become immensely harder if you don't have big hands. Anything under 7.75" hand and you will really need to set the gripper well to be able to close it. I'm positive if you learned how to set properly, with a little practice you could probably come within a few millimeters of the 3
The set definitely feels awkward at first because it's alot of pressure in a different area, once you get used to it thought it's way easier. It's possible to close heavy grippers without a set but your muscles and tendons in your hand have to adjust and it takes time. Personally I do deep sets and holds with the 2.5 and the 3 and I'm trying to no set my 2.5. I'm almost there once my CNS recovers I should be there but when I first got my 2.5 I never imagined I'd ever be able to no set it, it felt like a brick. Just practice the set with the lighter grippers and climb your fingers on until it's parallel then take off ur other hand and put the pinky on and squeeze
Hi Ryan I do think it translates on the table because finger straight in very important. You can stop a lot of movement from your opponents hand
Great vid! I got my 2.5 3 days ago -- cause there were no proper ones below that available from the site I order gym stuff.
Amazingly, lol, I can now squeeze out my highest effort on it quite regularly (almost down to a grips width of a CoC). And I don't feel like I've overtrained. The skin on my hands is pretty raw, even got a scrape on my left pinkie, but no tendon or muscle issues.
So I'm really excited for my own progress! ^^
Edit: I've trained for about 6 days every day with it now, and I've got it down to about a centimeter to closing. But that will be it for training with it for some days, as the bone in my hand for the ring finger on my left hand is aching a bit (it's already better now, so no worries).
So I definitely don't want any injuries, and I've already ordered the 1.5 and 2, so I can train lighter on the 1.5, and a 10-40 kg adjustable one.
I'll be supplementing with organic gelatine, and train light each day and heavy 1-2 times a week. ^^
I'm a former competitive powerlifter and currently training judo again which works your grip hard. I can rep the coc 2, but can't quite finish the 2.5 yet,but I'm close
I'm not an armwrestler, but when I have fun armwrestling mates, I find a solid grip matters loads
I guess it may be different with competitive armwrestlers?
But I agree strength is never a weakness
I will add that I think other grip training like fat gripz/axle deadlifts and pinches carries over to lifting better than crushing

Ryan, look into how to properly set and close the gripper. I'm 100% sure you'd be able to close the 2.5. There's an older video on Juji's channel showing how to set grippers. It really makes a difference. You might even get very close the closing the #3 with proper technique.

Keep working at it man. My grip was almost identical to yours when i started 6 months ago. Today I can comfortably close the 2.5 and on a good day the 3 but 3.5 feels like Mt Everest. Did you oil the coil? (Everyone does)
I could close the 3 left handed only when I finally built up to it. Now I'm outpacing my left hand with my right on the 2.5, and [with only my left] can 5-mill the 3.5.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who's getting their asses handed to them by these little bastards

You need to look up Jed Johnston , he’s a gripper king . On UA-cam
Just work with the 2.0 until it's super easy and you can do 25. Remember it takes 2 months to make tendons stronger, muscles will out pace the supporting structure of the hand...
Don't go crazy with it, you don't want injuries they take time to heal.

You need to use your thumb muscle to keep the handle from running down your hand and more aggressively force the gripper into your setting possition with your other hand

Ryan those grippers can vary upto 20lbs from for example one 2.5 to the next, if you trained on them for a few weeks you would get much stronger...
Flexing and extending the wrist while holding a light gripper fully closed is a great finisher. Isometric hold while cupping the wrist is also good but could be painful.
Your grip strength is quite strong for a beginner in the sport. I trained for 3 years before my first close of the 2.5, but I was also much lighter than you ~82kg. Keep practicing but be careful to back off if you feel the ache in the back of your fingers. Very easy to get tendinitis here, I have twice and it's no fun

Every dude I met who can close 2.5 or a 3 was strong at armwrestling especially in the fingers I think it helps the fingers work the forearm you can't go wrong with any workout but obviously there's alot better other workouts for fingers but I still believe crushing n squeezing it closed is good for the hand
2.5 is a beast, I trained for a solid year with the 2 before I could close it. I always set it low, the way you use to set it.
I haven't quite got the coc 2.5 yet, but I can rep my 2 for 8-10 solid reps.
I know everyone is different, but what rep range were you at when you could close the 2.5?

I can rep the 2 for 10 full reps and about 15 half reps. I am only a couple mm away from the 2.5, but that's the hard bit!

I love doing fat gripz deadlifts. I think they really strengthen the grip all around. I may completely stop grippers and go back to the fat gripz and pinches

Ive just started the coc grippers to, have them all up to nr 2, can close nr 2 a few times. Ordered the nr 2.5.. in my head, its feels like it helps my armwrestling.

Ive closed the 2.5, drives me crazy that my buddy closes the 3.5 , but hes bigger with larger hands. Its a good strength and gripping ability but its better to train your grip in the forms your hand is in at the table.
Two or more people can compete with a pair of vise grip pliers, set the grips as tight as you can on themselves and still close them, then pass them off to see if others can close them at that setting as well. Whoever can close them tightened down on themselves the tightest wins. I beat my dad and all our adult hired hands when I was 17.
I could always beat the hired arms, hired glutes, and most of the hired scrotums but never could i beat the hired hands! Thats phenomenal.

The set is about getting it so you're closing it against the solid structure of your hand and not the flexible base of your thumb. That also allows you to lock your thumb as it closes. Pulling against a solid frame like that is more efficient than trying to squeeze the 2 mobile parts together.
Have you seen MMT , KHALED ,and Larry Wheels doing the grip stuff? Great video,if a bit long. Anyway there's a guy that shows the correct placement many times.

I usually just buy walmart grippers and follow the John Berznik method of repping out 240 as fast as I can.

240 reps.
The rest time diminishs when you bulid endurance.
So it can be 24 reps for ten or a single set of 240 depending on how you can handle the weight.
But the purpose of trailike this is to mimic the time under tension module where in pulling you are always under stress so you should train constantly under stress.
Still zero and O so it must work.

I bought a 10lb rubber diving brick last week at the behest of a buddy of mine that lays bricks for a living. He has incredible hands (fingers). I’ve been holding the brick for time. My best time is 7:57 min. Give that a go. The “hub” is also a great tool for finger grip strength I think my max is 40 lbs.

Grippers are great, you should check out the video called "Magnus Samuelsson Grip Training"
It's hard to see what you're doing, but it looks like maybe you are wrapping your fingers a little too far around the handle. That creates a sticking point near the close.
How many times a week do u practise with grippers for best results ?
If you go back to East vs West and watch the grip strength challenge, Chance did worse than everyone... And I believe that's why hes so strong yet keeps losing. Because his hand is too weak. You need stronggg fingers
I dont train Grippers. The best I could do was a 2.5. Its very hard with short fingers

There's some nuance in setting those grippers, as you mentioned...stand up and extend your arm out. If you're sitting down bending your arm 90 degrees, your tendons are already contracted, taking away most of your power. You can close that 2.5 standing up, I'll bet on it

4 closer. This is a really strong start Ryan, especially after doing all that nail bending, which is probably the worst thing you can do for gripper fatigue by the way. Personally i would not bother setting, i don't think it's going to benefit you in terms of carry over, id keep it full range. The sliding back out of position thing that was happening is an issue when you get to the heavier grippers. To stop that you need to build up your thumb pads, pinch grip holds etc A large thumb pad is one of the biggest keys to grippers an also probably would make gripping up with you less comfy so most likely a good thing for arm wrestling also, plus having thumb strength is always going to be a good thing.

I have one that has a dial I can adjust max is 80lbs, when I first bought it I was only able to do a count of 30, now I can easily go up to 60...

...he dabbled in arm wrestling back in his day, and did very well. In fact, there's a famous video of him snapping someone's arm that didn't know how to arm wrestle. it's up on YT. He never actually committed full time to the sport though, as strong man was his main profession.

Great stuff. As a new comer to the sport, this has been a question of mine. Some of the best seem to not train grip at all, and just let holding on to straps and such do the work. I have gotten to get a hold of some experienced guys and non of them felt like my hand was in a vise, but in no way could I control their hand or wrist if they didn't let me.
It all depends on what technique is used.

Look up Jed Johnson grippers, that’s your guy for grip sport, you’ve got it too high but but pulling it with the other hand is correct for the set it’s called a credit card close

To make it more armwrestling specific, close the gripper, and then try to fully flex your wrist while keeping it closed. WATCH HOW FAST YOUR WRIST TENDONS BLOW UP!
Edit: also do lots of finger bands! Those have helped me with grippers more than wrist curls ever have!

Exactly! This type of exercise not only added 1.5 inches to my skinny wrists, but cured tendonitis which had been a problem for years.

Take the pinky out of the equation. Let the edge of the gripper (along the fingers) end half way through your ring finger. The idea is that the further down toward the end of the gripper you get, the better leverage you'll have. The problem is that the pinky is the weakest finger, and therefore bringing your stronger fingers down toward the end will increase the force you can apply. Watch Jujimufu's video:

Quick tip…..You will not be able to set anything past COC 2 that way because your hands are not big enough. Mine are 8.5 inches and I’m guessing yours are smaller. You must push it into your thigh for leverage to set them properly. Set it as high as possible and and bend your wrist back opposite of cupping to engage your flexors. If you practice without grippers you will quickly see that you are able to make a tighter, more efficient fist with your finger tips as close to the base of the fingers as possible and your first bent back. Practice that first to get the technique down, then set the gripper with those physics in mind.
Bad advice. You don’t mash it into your thigh unless it’s a negative. You learn how to properly set a grippers and practice until you can’t get it wrong. And when training, you can finish a heavy gripper day with practicing setting a gripper heavier than your max (max=heaviest gripper you can close). I’ve closed a #3.5 and GHP Level 8 with 7.25-inch hands.

Try your best on a dynamometer! The Gm150 from Russia is one of the most used ones in the sport. With your near miss on the 2.5 I’d say you should be able to hit at least 80kg
There is a lot of correlation with gripper vs dynamometer for those who have the technique down. Ryan has a very strong hand (will get stronger! Room to grow) I am very confident he would get 85kgs-87kgs on the GM when fairly fresh. Great pull.

I can close a #2 for 3 and just almost close a 2.5
You could train this, get all the way up to a 3.5 prior to RVJ... and if you won he'd still blame peds.
You can probably get the 2.5 if you push your thumb forward. If the gripper is strong and you don't have your thumbpad pushing into the handle it'll slide out the back and you'll lose a lot of power.
That 2.5 is hard. Especially if you don’t use the lighter ones for a bit.
2.5 is a very hard gripper. Next level for sure.
A harder 2.5 is a beast gripper. Always have to have the cns primed for those.

Yes. Specifically, look at the matches where someone is in a slipping position, and the guy grips and doesn't let them slip. Many clutch points have been won that way. That's just one example of many. The grip is part of the hand. The hand is part of the arm. The arm is part of .. ... .... arm wrestling
Better technique and chalk and rest time in between squeezing and you’ll get the 2.5
Also the 2.5 is wider then the 1 and 2
If you use better technique you can crush way more, your grip is strong

I'm a 62 year old tall guy (6'5") with big hands. I've never trained for competitive arm wrestling, but nevertheless I can beat most inexperienced people. I can close a #2 with difficulty. I use a #1 for most training. The majority of my friends - even big strong guys, can't close the #1 on their first attempt.
COC grippers vary like crazy. Not just in tension but also the spread of the handles. Not good quality control. There was a brand called Beef builder grippers that used to be available. They were much more consistent.
Vectors
Grippers are not worth training if you wanna get good at armwrestling. Its too much time consuming and the benefits are almost none. I've jumped from barely missing a 2.5 to closing a 3.5 within 6 months. But it didn't bring me much on the table.
If your elbow is conditioned to a high level, adding gripper strength allows you to make the match about the elbow......so benefit is high
in my opinion that grippers is only useful if your opponents in slipping and you are grabbing his fingers.. other then that it does nothing for actual armwrestling.
closing your fingers on a gripper is not the same strength as " finger flexion" its crushing strength.
Then you don't quite see how frickin strong of a grip that you develop with these. #3 corresponds to 280 lbs of pressure! You could hold your opponents hand in place, not allowing them to do shit with that kind of grip.
@@2DReanimation it dont translate well sadly because when you arm wrestle you want to bend your wrist in but on grippers you use crushing strength so for maximum crushing strength you flex your wrist slightly backwards.
you are focusing on a part of grip that is not important in arm wrestling sadly.
again that part of grip strength is only good if you are able to grab opponents fingers and not let go.

Use sledge hammer on a tire, and custom the handle by sanding a taper to the end of handle then use to work on ranges of motion, or vectors in your world
We have a guy who comes to practice like 4 times a year and he can close the 3.5. Its unreal how the finger power helps him.
Pretty much, worst setting technique on YT 😆, once you learn a proper set, you should be good for 2.5, your basic hand strength is prob a 2.7 or so 👍
