The character of Charlie Butz was based on Allen West, the self-proclaimed "mastermind" of the escape. Other than his word there's no evidence of that, and most likely it was Morris that was the leader. West claimed the plot began in late 1961, and the escape took place in June of the following year. As shown in the movie, West was apparently the most incompetent of the group, and while he didn't escape he made it to the water's edge. He then decided he wouldn't be able to escape and spent the night on the roof and got back in his cell the next morning. He was never charged with anything, and after Alcatraz closed spent pretty much the rest of his life in prison.

To calculate the value of old dollars (pre-65) vs today's dollars I use the current melt value of silver coins.
    Current value:
    Silver dime (pre-65) is $2.00
    Silver quarter is $5.01
    Silver half dollar. is $10.02
    Silver dollar. is $21.43
the nickel has a melt value of 6¢ while the copper penny (pre-1982) has a melt value of 6¢. Post 1981 pennies were 95% zinc so its melt value is almost 1¢.
    A 15¢ pay would equal $2.06.
When I was growing up in the 1950s gas was 25¢ per gallon. Using the same money I used when I started driving gasoline today is cheaper than when I was learning to drive. Gas here is $3.29 per gallon and the melt value of a silver dime is $2. Therefore 2 silver dimes will buy more than a gallon of gas and that's using melt value. There is actually a premium on silver coins so I could easily get more than melt value at a dealer.

It's pretty close. They used dummy heads and they know how they did it. What's crazy is in the real story, many more prisoners helped them get this escape done than what was shown. A lot of the prisoners were in on it. Helping someone escape was great purpose for them and no one dared to rat it out

We visited this famous island a while ago, here is a copy of their daily schedule:
    6:30 AM: Wake up
    7:00 AM: Breakfast
    **Numerous counts throughout the day**
    Lunch
12:25 PM: Outdoor recreation yard time (where inmates can stroll, play games and sometimes engage in fights)
    4:25 PM: Supper
    4:50 PM: Final lockup
    9:30 PM: Lights out
They claim to have the best food among all federal prisons.
There are bunch of other prison breaks, most failed or short lived, this one is the most famous, the uncertainty of their fate added extra layer of suspense and mystery.

Patrick McGoohan, the actor who portrayed the warden, had two hit shows in his native England, 'Danger Man' and ' The Prisoner' (Number Six) as well as portraying the English king in 'Braveheart'. He famously turned down the role of James Bond.

I've been there with my parents and sister in 1983. I'm not a fan of the ocean so the boat ride over was unnerving to say the least. It's pretty intimidating when you go in. If you wanted you could go in a solitary confinement cell for 5 minutes, I did, but didn't last the 5 minutes. I can't imagine being in there for a day, let alone a week or more! The currents are very strong, the water is very cold; I'm not sure about whether or not there is a strong chance for sharks, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't take that chance! Very good movie! Clint Eastwood is one of my favorite actors and my favorite movies are: Where Eagle's Dare, Ben Hur, Pale Rider, Gran Torino, Escape From Alcatraz, Absolute Power, The Dirty Harry Series, Firefox, and In The Line Of Fire.

Using an online inflation calculator, 15¢ (what Frank Morris was told his hourly earnings would be, from early on in the movie) in 1960 would be $1.58 per hour today.

    • @mikealvarez2322
      @mikealvarez2322 Місяць тому

The way they calculate inflation today is a complete lie. They changed the methodology in 1980 so as to fool and cheat social security beneficiaries in their colas, cost of living adjustments. I don't trust the inflation calculator one bit. John Williams, the economist, has a website he calls SHADOW GOVERNMENT STATISTICS where he calculates the rate of inflation the way it was before the government started monkeying with the numbers.

Funny thing is that Alcatraz had hot showers so the inmates weren't able to acclimate to cold water. At least that was nice I guess. 😁

Fun fact few people know -- to help the escapees get used to the cold water in the bay, they used the water in their cells. They would get their towels wet, drape them over their bodies and lay on the cold cement floor at night.

    Hi Verdy,
Excellent movie, one of the first Clint Eastwood movies I remember seeing.
You could watch "Runaway Train" 🚝 , for me one of the best prison movies...and the only good movie from the Cannon production company. 😂
Have a good trip with the cinema young lady, great reaction.
