- What happens if you make a travel show with no planning?
FIRST TIME HERE follows travelers Josh and Emily as they explore new places for the first time. See more at firsttimeheretr....
Shot in Japan over 4 days in April 2012, episode 1 of FIRST TIME HERE takes Josh and Emily to Kyoto and Tokyo.
FIRST TIME HERE: JAPAN was created as a pilot. The teaser for the South Africa episode at the end is there to make the pilot feel like a full episode of the show we hope to continue making. The footage in South Africa was actually shot as a screen test for Emily, who had never been on camera before.
FIRST TIME HERE: JAPAN was filmed during the Spring 2012 voyage of Semester at Sea. For more information about the Semester At Sea visit www.semesterats....
Shot, Directed, and Edited by: Adam J Bianchi
Starring: Josh Best and Emily Volkmann
Such a friendly man at 11:20! One of the reasons I'd love to visit Japan is because of their kindness and friendliness towards people. I'd feel very safe in the fact that the Japanese are very helpful, expecting no reward in return. ^^ The guy who gave you free umbrellas made me smile :)
lol that shit would never happen in the us. The store owner would close the store not giving a damn!
Yudi Prabudi Even you are African or Asian, you will normally be treated friendly in Japan as long as you look like a neat tourist. I don't think this happen in most countries.
Yudi Prabudi
If you haven't visited Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku yet, please go there and you can see all of Tokyo from the popular 202 meter high observation decks, located on the 45th floor of the main building No.1. You don't have to pay for it as it's free of charge (9.30am - 10.30pm).
This is why I love Japan 😊😊 . It's both wonderful and upsetting that such small acts of humanity can make me so happy
That was a bit painful to watch. I don't see the point of complaining especially when you did not do your homework before going to a foreign country. for the most part Tokyo is very english friendly. Train stations are in both english and Japanese, so are the announcements. Know the weather / rainy seasons, best time to come to is fall or spring. Avoid summer as it is brutally humid.
Food is cheap, lots of great local spots. As for the not eating in public.yes that is very rude to do, hence if you notice it is super clean. Your food smell may bother someone ( please don't ever eat on the subway)
Pick up a rail pass before you come, you can travel on the Shinkansen and have access some jr stations.
I have been lucky to visit to visit Japan many times, as I type this I am in Tokyo and loving it :)
+elysiumcore and book hotels in advance
+elysiumcore That's right as you said,
+Kimiaki Ooyama Could you go to a capsule hotel? Are those somewhat cheap?
(saying this with no experience) I personally would just always do that, because it is quite cheap, and really, all I want for a hotel is a place to put bags and go to sleep....
Are capsule hotels cheap? I've never been to Japan, but am learning the language and have a cheap planned for later in the year :)
in their defense they were doing a semester at sea program so it sounds like they went to a lot of places in a short period of time.
Painful to watch.
ah 'the umbrella experience' in Japan is pretty famous! Its nice that you could show this to interested people, becoz in Japan people often give you an umbrella to help you when your're in need. I love that deep respect and compassion in that country.
So much a shock for these two! They must be happy to be back and safe in America...
Man.... Those streets are so clean. America you find trash all over the place. Then America you hear people talking everywhere. Over there it's so quiet and soothing. Doesn't even sound boring. The streets looks so clean you could sleep on them. The lights are beautiful. Japan, Tokyo is DEFINITELY where I'm going when I'm older.
Song at 15:42 is called Thirteen Thirtyfive by Dillon. A depressing song, and the irony that it would play after the day they had.
No other country like Japan, polite people, high tech & super clean...love it !
... "No one talks." Well, yeah, they're walking by themselves, what did you expect? No one is just going to randomly yell while they are alone. Unless they are crazy.
People seem lovely there, how nice of that man to give away 2 umbrellas to a couple of strangers in need ^^
Yup, Japanese are known for their good-nature and kindness towards others.
Wow that's something we need in my country ^^
One time I was waiting for the bus when it suddenly started to rain, so an old lady rushed out from her house hysterically handing me an umbrella. Never met as much kindness as in Japan!
The people are lovely but they didn't seem very thankful
Hmm...really? Guess I have to go experience Japan to know whether they are like that or not.....
Great video. It reminds me of traveling as a 20 something in a foreign country and with a minimum of planning and knowledge, having a great time despite screw ups. Fast forward about 40 years and I'm planning a first time trip to Tokyo and Kyoto. Hope I make out as well.
THe girl reminds me of the sadness emotion from the movie Inside Out
ohmygoooodness xD yes lol
Great video, I am actually visiting Japan now and will be in Kyoto next week, any chance you recall the name of the store or street the man gave the 2 free umbrellas? I want to visit his store, show him the video, and buy a bunch of stuff I don't need to repay his kindness.
That would be awesome. Unfortunately, I don't know the name of the store or the street. I just know that we were somewhere near the Philosopher's Walk.
Daniel W Yes, agree with you. I am planning to visit Japan by myself, this video is good for my preparation. But Adam! Could you plz tell that how can you guys find toilets on your way if you need? :)) Thanks!
+Daniel W when i saw that happening i was going to comment the exact same thing
Lucky you
This was painfully motivating for me to go travel, can't be less prepared than this L0L.
Aw did you guys not have one of those travel guide books? It looks like you had a pretty rough (and wet, lol) time there!
The smooth jazz thing was so funny though
Just when I thought this video was getting boring, some random Japanese guy gives these two an umbrella--no payment required, no conditions, no nothing. If that's not humanity in action, I don't know what is. Wow.
Omg...the streets look super clean.
I don't want to sound mean or like I'm having a stab at you both, but yikes smile. You're in a beautiful country with so many wonders! Yet all I hear from you guys are moans, and harsh words about Japanese culture and their apparent 'weird' rules. I'd love to be there seeing the treasures Japan holds! Unfortunately I'm not so lucky yet, but hopefully sometime in the future.
Remember how fortunate you are.
hi Natalie I have been to Japan three times and there isnt a nicer, cleaner cooler country :)
My thoughts exactly
by far one of an very informative videos of japan out there, kudos to you two. Traveling, you don't know what to expect, keep up the great work. I hope to go to Japan in the future.
"Special Thanks to: the umbrella man" :D made me smirk hard
I just booked my tickets to Japan!! I'm super excited!! Thanks for sharing; video was AMAZING quality. I noticed a lot of commenters here were pretty rude. As for me, I'm glad you showed some of the struggles your travel group went through. It really helps prepare me for the trip and know what to expect. I will def bring an umbrella
Positive minded travelers describe new things as interesting while depressing/ negative minded travelers will describe them as weird.
seriously
This video was lovely. Japan is a place I want to go to so bad, and it is nice to see how other foreigners just walk into a country that is unfamiliar and still have a great time. I love hoe Josh kept saying "I'm not complaining, because we're in Japan!!", and how Emily was always smiling and laughing, even if she was miserable. I would love if this turned into a show!! I'd watch every episode.
Japan! Love it so much!
I love this vlog. It actually SHOWS Japan and the environment instead of a person sitting in front of a camera. The only thing that bugged the hell out of me was the unpreparedness. I would check the weather to know if it's raining or not, I would learn the language, how to speak it and how to read it and write it before going to ANY country. Not knowing where you are is a perfect way to be in danger. Having expensive equipment soaking wet is a perfect way to waste time and money.
good job with this adam!
Travel 10,000 kilometers. Eat at McDonalds.
Jason Kolojeski Awesome point!
Jason Kolojeski And not to mention that they dont even know a single word in Japanese. Didnt even say Thank You to the guy handing them the umbrella, in his own language. I mean come on, who doesnt know Arigato or Konnichiwa, right?!
***** you take pride of that bullshit way of eat? omg... that is why in some places fat people drive in little cars
Jason Kolojeski If they ate the cheese teritama that they were showing, then they can't be faulted. That's seasonal, only available a month or two of the year. And quite good. Yeah, it's McD... but it's Japan only, with limited time availability.
Jason Kolojeski lmfao, I thought the exact same thing. They couldn't even use chopsticks properly
Japan so amazing beautiful!!!!
Love Japan!!! From Malaysia.
Please keep this fun
Yes people DO talk in Japan. But how are they supposed to talk when you don't speak their language? And they're also doing whats called
'Going about their own business'.Perhaps you've heard of it. What were you expecting your first day there?
Man, these videos make me miss Japan so much. I spent 2 months over there and just seing Kyoto and Tokyo again in this video brings a lot of memories back. Nice job, I really enjoyed it.
Beautiful cinematography. What equipment did you use to shoot this?
I felt so bad watching this, I wish I could have been there to help! There's a hotel chain called "Toyoko Inn" that has rooms for $60-$80/night, they're small but they have everything. Also, convenience stores ("combini wa doko des'ka?") all carry 500 yen umbrellas, which people leave at the front entrance of shops and other convenience stores. Oftentimes since they're so cheap people leave them when it stops raining, for others to use like this couple did. Want to go back so badly!
I love Japan!!! I really want to travel there someday :)
Awesome camera work. I kinda wish there were more vids about Japan like this one.
And here I was, thinking that packing a foldable travel umbrella and having a rain cover for your rucksack would be common sense especially when having an expensive camera with you.
So sad that was raining !!! But guys, you have to enjoy !!! SMILE say than a million words!!! :D I be confused as well with being japan, not knowing where to go... hahha but Life is to Enjoy!!! ;) Thanks for the Video ...like the quality of the video
You will never find more nicer people then the Japanese.
true.
true
you wont find a more suicidal people either :)
Americans used to be like the Japanese in terms of politeness and etc during the 40s 50s
then during the drug fest of the 60s they realized they don't need to act that way, the same thing will happen to the Japanese one day. Although i hope that doesn't happen, Its pathetic how people think America is better off after the 1950s and kids should treat parents and elders like garbage cause its cute or some sh@&, The propaganda machine in America has taught everyone they are worthless don't trust anyone and worship celebrities
***** Iceland has much higher suicide rates than Japan.
Thank you very much!
11:28 This is why we love Japan.
Please make more of these! I studied in Kyoto this summer so I loved this! Can't wait to see what else you make and the next places you go!
I hope you guys know, it is considered rude to talk too loud. it is also considered rude to talk on the bullet train.
Never been to Japan. But i always want to be !!!
You prepared me for my next trip of Tokyo and other parts. Courtesy by Japaneses guy for Umbrella really amazed me !
Like your project "First Time here"
I love Japan one day i will visit they have such an amazing culture ^.^
This is why it's probably a smart idea to know elementary or basic Japanese so at least you could get to a convenient store and buy some umbrellas. I think that scene where the guy gave you guys free umbrellas shows the kindness of the culture. Sure everyone is quiet and keeps to themselves, but when someone needs help, everyone is willing to help. Very caring people.
14:48, you know a country is awesome when the cashiers are wearing attack on titan shirts
Saving up for a trip to Japan next year, spending 2 weeks there next October. Watching these videos of people traveling there makes me giddy with anticipation.
Good luck :)
You will have a great time, you can book your accommodation online and print some maps so that you can walk from the train or metro station to your hotel.
Buy a Rough Guide or Lonely Planet guide book, these books explain almost
everything, for example how the train system works.
Japan is great!
I can't wait to visit Japan!!!
It was shot on a Canon 60D DSLR and most Canon DSLRs have great video. I would recommend using a lens with image stabilization (IS) if you are going to do handheld type work like what you see in FIRST TIME HERE.
That rock garden has more personality than Emily.
Loved the part from the taxi cab when they filmed rain and talked about how wet it was
The hosts were really awkward
I hope you all enjoyed your visit, and I look forward to seeing your other videos! Great job! I'm a half Japanese U.S. citizen living in Tokyo and was looking for something to show a friend in the states, what Japan looks like. I'll send him the link now! Arigato gozaimasu for the hard work :)
if I would have watched this as a first reference to go to japan idk if I would want to go ... they complain so much but it's only their own fault for not doing any research. They barely experience some real Japan culture ... and they rather go to mcdonalds ... I mean you guys even make me depressed -_-
+Deepest Blue who cares. fuck off
I think I have the right to state my opinion ... that's why there's a comment section. Unlike you I'm not calling anyone names . so please XD
I think i have a right to call you names, because I have a keyboard. Eat shit
+Bobby Dee "dear"you are really rude!!! Deepest Blue`s opinion it`s so true, this video is depressing!
leona orio I know rightttt and don't even listen to trolls like that ;) I don't care
'Exit" described in the video around 16:30-17:00 is "Emergency Exit". There will be shuttered next the emergency exit in case the building is on fire, but you can use the door at Emergency exit. you can find the door not in use.
Most depressing travel show ever X)
Omg yea haha, I started watching this video, but I stopped it, they are both such a loser
TheJamShot Why did they even bother?
Realistic=depresing ... i liked it
Ah getting caught in the rain, losing your way, all of which they don't usually show you on travel shows, love it!
I'm planning a trip to Japan next October and all I can say is that these travelers should have done a little bit more research about Japan, its culture, manners and etiquette, and pretty much better planning (weather, hotel, transportation, etc.). It's definitely a good quality production, but a positive more happier vibe would have been nice to see.
I love your video...it is so real and touches souls...I can almost smell and hear the rain, the wetness and the fragrance of the cherry blossoms...wonderful works. !
Hi!! I'm Japanese!!
Japan is so nice??
You make a mistake, 日本国 ❌
日本 ⭕️
I think Japan looks very attractive! There are a lots of people who want to go.(( Sorry for my bad english, i'm french..))
+Sana Hey Yes!!
Your English is good!!
aww the man who gave you the umbrella is so nice!!!!!!!
nice place, terrible tourists. This couple's facial expression is like ' really? Are you fucking kidding me?'
you want attention? here you go.
Loved the video, loved the hosts. Really nice people, they make it all seem very real. I wish this video never ended. Go to japan again.
Brilliant editing nice work.
What a nice man!! That's so considerate of him.
This should be called Umbrella Quest.
Wow, that Japanese man who gave you guys umbrellas was so kind!
with all that gear they didnt even pack an umbrella?
Nice video and it was good to see some of my fave places in Japan. I was there when you guys were filming this and it would have been interesting if I'd run into you. Gotta say I think you would have had a much better time if you'd made some plans before coming to Japan. Seen lots of folks that just show up without much research and don't have anywhere near as good a time as is possible.
i will come to japan in march! XD
ようこそ日本に
***ようこそ日本へ
Is the right way of saying "welcome to japan"
Well made and fun to watch... can't believe you guys didn't do any proper research before getting to Tokyo.. Like most asian cities, there isn't really a 'city centre'
lol so only I got here from Buzzfeed's "UA-cam Secrets You Need To See"? xD
***** lol im not alone yay xD
LilyHelen Leyden I am :3
LilyHelen Leyden Same the comic mode didn't work so i decided to type the whole url to see what the vid was
Robin Nash It still didn't work for me cx
+Emilyy Minton didnt work for me etheir
First time are always the best times.
Good to see you all had fun!
I think this video should be retitled "How To Be A Clueless Tourist In Japan." Lessons could include "How to not buy an umbrella when it's raining" or "How to feel that everything different from your culture/country is normal and everything else is 'weird'" or "How to not make eye-contact when saying 'thanks'" or even "How to wait until the last moment to find accommodations and then be shocked by the price."
Haven't even watched 5 minutes of this yet, but I lalready love it.
What type of camera are they using to film
Mention me if someone answer this. I want the answer too. :D
Yuki San keep going down into the older comments, the guy who posted the video has answered a few people with the same question.
HoldUrColours : I try Going Down into the older comment. But I don't see it.
I also want to know that!
it is amasing place. I want to go there.
ようこそ日本へ!
日本はあなたを歓迎しますよ♪
また来て下さいね♪
Really nicely done. Loved this and wish you had more of these videos. It felt like a very professional production, and still very natural. Super photography. Brings back wonderful memories of our own Tokyo visit. Thanks and best of luck. You've got a real talent.
UNRIVALED OPTIMISM! :O
This is one of the best Japan tour videos I've seen on here.
Bring da umbrella damn it!!!!
This helped me a lot on my trip there last April, thanks!!!
anyone else come from buzzfeed?
The music got progressively better towards the end. The music selection towards the beginning was a little obscure. Nice job at capturing a real life feel of travelers in Japan. I enjoyed this a lot.
The only reason i am here is to add &pow=1&nohtml5=1 to the end of the link and make it comic book mode
me too
me too...
lol
POW in youtubes face....
Did you have to watch the whole video? And can you skip the video and still get POW?
Great video! I'm going there for the first time in October, and traveling alone! Very excited.
Nice. I kinda enjoy it. very real. I missed comfort food when I travel so I think it is ok to film going into McDonald's -- not the most exciting choice in Japan but understandable. But I do agree that the 'weird' comments and 'errie' 'quiet' bits are a bit insensitive. Japanese are very particular about social etiquette so they r super polite and quiet.
Dude who gave you umbrellas is a superstar!!
A very beautiful country
23:33 There aren't many trashcans around the streets in Japan, so walking and eating is kind of frowned upon. Usually, if you get a drink at a vending machine - there will be a trashcan for your empty bottle or at a food vendor. I'm told that this is to keep the streets neater.
Like most of the comments mention, these two travellers make one of the most boring and worst travel-shows.
Four-day-trip for two major cities in Japan as their first visit is ridiculous to begin with, where the culture is so unique and deep. Many people will spend four days just in one island! And if one travels abroad with no planning, at least be prepared to enjoy every unpredicted incident like rain. Smile! Yes, a physical smile will change your mentality and attitude.
If they thought the silence of lone walkers on the street was "weird" (personally, if I witness all those lone walkers talking to themselves, I would feel more "weird" and worrying), may I say that the woman was so very WEIRD not to respond whatsoever, apart from a couple of blank glances, to that kind man's offer of umbrellas.
If they are still travelling abroad, DO TRY to enjoy all experiences that you'd never encounter in your home neighbourhood, unless you get dragged in a crime scene or something, of course.
Japan is awesome
Gotta find different actors for your show...people who enjoy travelling and exploring.
I enjoyed this doc very much. The scenery and camera work was pleasant. I would've liked some Japanese theme music though.
I honestly don't know why you guys didn't plan things in advance, like hotel rooms, umbrellas etc.. As for you characterization of Japan having "weird" rules, I don't know why you would expect things to be the same as where ever it is you come from (I assume somewhere in the US), it is a different country after all. Maybe a little more research into the customs in Japan should have been done, including a little bit of the language - even just a phrasebook would have been helpful, and I don't know why you didn't have one. Finally, you looked as if you hated being in Japan, based on the amount of complaining. I am sorry to say so, but that is my reaction to this video.
Thank you guys! I'm visiting in 2 weeks and this video will help me a lot!
I know you guys are travelling the world and all but as tourists, you guys should have at least learned how to say hello and thank you in Japanese... The world doesn't acclimate to you, you should acclimate to the world...
We totally agree and we did. Sometimes we would forget to say it or we would say it in English first since it is so automatic to us. You can hear Josh and Emily both saying thank you in Japanese (arigatō) to the man who gave them umbrellas at 11:38. You can also hear Josh saying it at 20:40.
+Adam J Bianchi probably should say "arigato gozaimasu" since saying just "arigato" is pretty disrespectful towards an older man.
I agree, especially if you are getting something for free!!
Faith N
Not a big matter, I guess. Because that old man knew they were foreigners.
No one in Japan criticizes foreigners' grammatical mistake so rigidly.
I'm a Japanese by the way.
Thanks I really enjoyed watching this ! Thanks for the upload
You guys don't seem very enthusiastic about being in Japan. I'm sorry, I love the footage and your cameraman takes really good shots but your hosts are severely bringing the whole thing down.
When I went in 2009 I smiled and talked to people and DID MY RESEARCH and had an amazing time solo!
I stayed in Japan for about 1 year. Personal experience, you HAVE to know Japanese. Or should I say, you should know at least basic japanese to really enjoy all the places. Japan has so many subtleties that one can easily miss out on. Document your trip well, and you will cherish it forever! :) I use this app called hindsites on android. Happy journey! :D
