ScoutCrafter, I just love your videos. There’s nothing better than watching tool talk after a long challenging week at work. Beautiful job on that chisel.
When you showed that set of books on the table, it reminds me that my dad had a set of books by Audels. Carpentry, plumbing, mathematics for carpenters, etc. published in 1938. Still have them. Chisel turned out great. Those old tools just remind me of the skills and patience that the old craftsmen had. Gosh I remember when you were lucky if you could get a soda at a gas station. Of course every gas station could repair your car back then!!!
Looked like a great night for tool selection. I saw a few items I would have liked and I'm sad that I missed it. Work has been crazy with OT!! Sleep, work, sleep, work, repeat for a month. The chisel came out beautiful!! Love the wood turning and ring on the end. True craftsmanship. Have a great weekend!!
So many awesome tools. That bench with all the machinist tools and toolboxes really caught my attention. That chisel turned out so good I wouldn't want to hit it with a hammer! Very nice!
Doubt you'll see this because I'm posting a year after you made this vid, but if you are, I second your comment on having a favorite gas station. I always tell my wife I really like going to a well lit, clean station at night. I don't know what it is that draws me to them, but for some reason it just seems like a nice oasis of comfort and community, perhaps security, especially on road trips. Love your channel - just came across it a couple of months ago and have been busy going through your library of vids; you got me hooked on tool restoration now and I just went out and got wire wheels, grinding pads, and buffers for my angle and bench grinders and scored a bunch of pipe wrenches and C-clamps at an auction for a few dollars each. Thanks again for the great content.
That chisel is beautiful. You are right on about the gap between chisel and handle. Nice job. Chris has a very reasonable priced table and it must be empty in no time. Thanks
Very nice job on the chisel John it’s got years of life back in it. When I go visit my daughter in Texas I go to a supers gas station called Buckies. It’s actually a destination With over 100 gas pumps per location and they even have a barbecue inside that is fantastic. It’s well worth the trip have a good weekend look forward to Monday
I’m glad I went and met up with you! Now I see how much must have been bought up before I got there! I saw a dozen things in this video that I would have bought if they were there when I got there! Still, it was a great time and very nice people! Thanks for featuring Charlie and making my birthday special! 👍🏻
I was so glad to see you go straight to the angle grinder. So many restorers waste time with wire brushes, sandpaper, files, and even chemicals before breaking out the angle grinder, when it was obvious from the start that that's what was going to happen in the end. I don't know how you passed up so many perfect handle screwdrivers! If I saw those for $5 or less I'd be scarfing them all up.
Sometimes on tools that I don't know what the deal is I will wire brush them to see if there is a name or engraving that could drastically change the value or how I approach the tool... Thanks!!!!!!!!
Gotcha - thanks! With the level of "patina 😂" on this chisel, it looked like a straight-to-grinder project to me, but that's a great point. Some of them have really cool marks.
Every time you do one of those tours, I keep my eyes opened for a pump organ reed puller. Haven't seen one yet ! Great video ! Another month gone ! Have a Fantastic weekend !
I love this project! Great job. You are the greatest guy and have the greatest channel! Plus you know, I was out in my shed trying to find a tool, and guess what? I found a pair of perfect handle Wiss Hedge Trimmers like the ones you had on your video a few weeks ago! I didn’t even know I had them. They were some of my Dad’s stuff I forgotten I had! I am going to clean them Up and hang them on the wall! Thanks ScoutCrafter for all you do!
That's a perfect handle you fabricated. Much more difficult and time consuming than it looks. Nice job. I take for granted that the metal will gleam but you wood skills are awesome too.
Hi Tom- I have 4 wood lathes! LOL Before I got into metal work I loved turning stuff on the lathe... Nothing is more fun! Not even the Dake! LOL Thanks!!!!!!!!!
When I was in ninth grade I had wood shop ( my absolute favorite part of the day), we had unusual fluorescent light fixtures in the shop. They looked like ceiling fans, except instead of blades there were long U shaped tubes. One of the guys was using a lathe, the gouge slipped out of his hand and went airborne. I swear it looked like slow motion, end over end it took out about 2 or 3 of those tubes. You never seen guys run so fast in their lives. Gosh I miss those days.
John, I've never been to a tool meet and in a way I'm kind of glad. I don't think I could trust myself to leave there without buying absolutely everything! Great video!
ScoutCrafter, I loved this episode. I dearly hope someday to recover enough to come out to one of these activities. The chisel really turned out beautiful. I think we'd all love to see you giving this to Dan and hearing anything he would add!
Thanks for the great footage got caught late at work unfortunately and couldn’t make it. Anyways thanks again for your hard work. Many of us appreciate and understand the effort and craftsmanship that goes into the restorations. Opposed to that thing the field that had to say something. That guy really turned my gears he must have some ego to say that, but as they say ego is the anesthesia that deadens the pain of stupidity. Keep up the amazing work!
Andrew- I hope you don’t get upset! It’s just a little joke to break the levity of the channel- That Guy was me adding the blurb in when I was editing! 😃👍. All for fun!
Lotta good stuff there at that show. If only it were a traveling tool show and not tied down to Long Island... Who knows, maybe one day I'll be out that way when the show is up and running and I'll have better than souvenirs to bring back with me.
Been waiting for you to do a chisel, finally gave up and did them without your guidance. Two big 2" timber frame from the same company, one had what I thought was the original handle (bad shape) so I made two more. Mine weren't as rusty as yours, and I didn't clean up the metal as much as you. Did a few smaller ones also, I like to try different designs and woods on the handles. Great job once again. Now I can say if Scoutcrafter can spend all that time working on his chisels, it must be worth my time also.
Michael- A few years back there was a resurgence in timber framing and all timber frame tools were sort after again... We tend to go thru cycles but I don't think the newer generation will have much interest in making things... In 20 years all the timber framing tools will be worthless once again like anvils... =) It's fun for us though! Thanks!
Outstanding! I had a mentally challenged neighbor years ago. He asked to borrow a saw and i said no, he persisted and finally he convinced me to lend him a chisel. He cut a tree down (with my chisel) and it landed in the community pool. Lol...i miss that guy 🤣🤣🤣
Wow! I had to look for my jaw after you showed us the finished chisel! And trust me everybody that puts any time in (trying) to restore tools too the level you do, sees and knows all the time you put in. Believe me, I'm struggling to get a gas can painted (guess where I got my inspiration..) for all week now because of the rain over here and I don't like to spray paint in the shed. Thanks for taking us too the tool society meet, it looks so great, there is so much awesome stuff and crazy cheap too! Great to see you've taken that 2 bucks box for starters! Hope you have a terrific weekend and this is strange to say but I look forward to monday!
I have never seen a chisel like that. A very good job. Over the winter I found about a tractor show and a engine and threshing show. Hope I can find some good deals. My son and I have been getting a few things at auctions but they can be very expensive and out of my range. Thanks
$1 Table.... Just pack that right up form me, I'll take it all. ☻ Thanks for bringing us along to the meet (again), John. Fantastic job on the chisel! Why don't you just pop that in the mail for me and I'll expedite the $5 to you. Cheers and keep them coming.
If Dan doesn't, I sure do. Love to see these. Especially a nice chisel. Also, I want that wrench at 3:04. If it's there when you go back, buy it, and I will pay you for it plus $10 and the shipping to get it to me.
We are going to have to have a talk with that person. Always heckling you :P. This was really neat. I wish we had things like this event in my town. Thanks Scout see ya Monday!!! That chisel is God like. Great job :D
That chisel looks damn nice scout crafter also oiling the ball detent you suggested on the last episode worked swimmingly and you saved my southwire screwdriver thanks again
Would love to go to that show to the gas station I would really really rack up it brings back so many memories Scout God bless your family and friends what a shame they don't have that'll be in Puerto Rico 😕 great video keep them coming God bless you family and friends.👍👍 by the way beautiful work on a chisel came out great I should say gorgeous.
Hi John , Another Nice Job . Its A Little Nicer and Older than the Chisels I Used Framing ! Plastic Handled . 😂 Another Tool Saved by Scoutcrafter from the Salvage / Trash Bin !
Scoutcrafter you are amazing at bringing back the poor rusty tools. That chisel is absolutely gorgeous. If I could be there I think I would go nuts on those wonderful finds. I love watching your videos, your the greatest!
I wish they had these tool meets in the UK. Some of those tools looked like bargains, the biggest problems is when people in the UK get American tools the price goes up greatly. I guess it may be similar in the states?. Great chisel, I have some old English ones and they have a leather buffer between the chisel and the handle.
There are two types of chisel, mortise chisel and "firmer " chisel. They are designed for different work...If you want to bash hell out of the tool cutting deep mortises use a mortise chisel..............they have the leather washer to ease the job. As tools got cheaper to make, manufacturers got greedy and gradually things defaulted to the .....one tool , do everything with it , abuse it , throw it away...........they only cost a few dollars. Stavros
We men complain when the wives make us come shopping with them, but... You take them on just ONE trip to a tool swap / flea market and they’ll never ask us to come along again. My wife when I show her my find: “whaddya want with that piece of junk, they should have paid you to take it away!” Me, three days later after bringing said “piece of junk” fully restored back into the house: What do you think honey? Wife: how much did that cost, it looks expensive! Me: should I tell her, hmmm? Lol I chose NO. She’d have me knee deep in projects from all of her girlfriends because their husbands “can’t!” Great vid, so jealous! Can’t wait to hit the “field flea markets” this spring and summer again. We have pretty big ones in Massachusetts. Thanks for taking us along brother!
Ha man that is amazing !!! And the tools just drive me crazy to see i won't be able to sleep tonight. And here snow storms and more snow, have nice weekend Scout 👍👍
Here in Florida we have gas stations just like that one on every corner. 7-11 on one, Circle K on another BP on another, Cumberline Farms on another, and a few more mid block. Nice work on that chisel, I'm betting you also bought that nesting screwdriver set.
And so...another late Winter Friday and the dogs and I settle in to watch another revelation by Scoutcrafter. Terrific as always. Roofie and Mags (my Dachshunds) were wondering if there's anything to be done with one of their old stainless bowls? 😄
@@ScoutCrafter When we moved out of the city I fell in love with the gas stations and the feed stores. My husband thinks I'm nuts. Hahaha!! Great places to hang out and make friends and the oldsters tell stories you could listen to all day.
Same. I thought why not start a Patron, and a live stream? You can prepay through Patreon, or Superchat on YT as a form of payment. Have ScoutCrafter but and ship it. $150 gets a restoration before it ships. Get paid to shop and paid to make videos!
Sweet chisel! The stuff there would have required me to bring a trailer. You should travel much farther than you normally do if the gas station is cool to you. Come see Arkansas!
@@ScoutCrafter Well come on down then! I would love to meet you in person. I live in a slightly infamous town called Mena. You might have seen it in the movie "American Made". Our airport is famous. I would love to show you around.
Yeah, for a blacksmith forging that type of socket out would be a lot of work. I imagine it's quite a bit more durable than a forge-welded socket because it's solid steel all the way around the neck as oppsed to how you'd go about making the tradtional forge-welded version.
Great video scout thanks so much for the footages ya so niceties see these events I wish we had stuff like this down in New Zealand 🇳🇿 the chisel came up great did you use the angle grinder only or did you pop it on the 1/30 can’t wait to see the other goodies you got and I was so happy to see Charlie the wonder dog 🐕 great video god bless take care 🇳🇿🔧🔪👌🏻👍
Nice job on the chisel handle. Glad you mentioed thr needed gap between the socket and the shoulder on the handle. Keeps from splitting the outside off the handle. What annoys me is finding a laminated steel chisel with a bent blade. Someone tried to pop out a chip that wss too big. That and hitting the socket with a hammer. Ruins the chisel in just a few blows.
Old Sneelock's Workshop Dave- When I was young and dumb I abused a few tools not knowing the proper way to use them, I never blame people who don’t know I just blame the people who know better! 😃👍
I know a bit about collectors, but what about the guys that sell stuff at these meetings? Do they do any collecting to keep or do they primarily look for stuff to sell? And where do they find the old tools? - Kathie
artsietopology Kathie- There is an old saying in the collecting field “We just hold on to the stuff until we sell it again”. They were buying 20 years ago, now as they get older it’s time to downsize. 😃👍
ScoutCrafter, I just love your videos. There’s nothing better than watching tool talk after a long challenging week at work. Beautiful job on that chisel.

THANK YOU...for sharing. John, I watched and I very much enjoyed. Nice work on the chisel. An old photo ad of Steve.

Great show footage but the restoration on the chisel was outstanding! It looks brand new. Thanks for sharing this.

Hello John, you have magic hands every tool you touch you make miracles with it!!!!!.🏅🏅🏅🏅🏅
Great job. Sure wish I could go to those meets with ya.
Very nice! Looks brand new.
Hard to believe it’s the same chisel. Great job as always mate. 🇦🇺👍
Dynamite tool and show! Wish I lived closer
Beautiful result. Love it
Really like how the chisel turned out. But with all the metal in there it was obvious that it could be saved.
tanathos0414 One time I did a thick rusty wrench only to find a hairline crack I couldn’t see before. I was pissed! 😃
Great video - have a great weekend.
Dan and we, your fans, (not like that guy in the yard, the bum) appreciate it. Great Video.
That chisel looks damn nice scout crafter also oiling the ball detent you suggested on the last episode worked swimmingly and you saved my southwire screwdriver thanks again
Rush Fitzwater That is awesome! 😃👍
Thanks for the tour. I felt like I was right there.
Would love to go to that show to the gas station I would really really rack up it brings back so many memories Scout God bless your family and friends what a shame they don't have that'll be in Puerto Rico 😕
great video keep them coming God bless you family and friends.👍👍
by the way beautiful work on a chisel came out great I should say gorgeous.
Awesome job on that chisel. You’re right about city gas stations.
If there's one thing I've learned from your channel......, it's, regardless of what condition it may seem, a new life awaits it.
"Oh wait, back up". I said that in my mind a few times as your camera panned across the tools. :) Great job on the chisel.

I dont know why I laugh so hard at the 'Hey Scoutcrafter, you suck!' intro, but I do. Love your videos John. You're my inspiration
Hit this one ...out of the park...Nice...Nice...
Sweet chisel! The stuff there would have required me to bring a trailer. You should travel much farther than you normally do if the gas station is cool to you. Come see Arkansas!
upside downdog I really want to see Arkansas!!!!

Well come on down then! I would love to meet you in person. I live in a slightly infamous town called Mena. You might have seen it in the movie "American Made". Our airport is famous. I would love to show you around.
Excellent vid I would love to go to one of those events just once.
What a transformation !!!!!!!!!
Yeah, for a blacksmith forging that type of socket out would be a lot of work. I imagine it's quite a bit more durable than a forge-welded socket because it's solid steel all the way around the neck as oppsed to how you'd go about making the tradtional forge-welded version.
You nailed it scout crafter
Great video scout thanks so much for the footages ya so niceties see these events I wish we had stuff like this down in New Zealand 🇳🇿 the chisel came up great did you use the angle grinder only or did you pop it on the 1/30 can’t wait to see the other goodies you got and I was so happy to see Charlie the wonder dog 🐕 great video god bless take care 🇳🇿🔧🔪👌🏻👍
Hi Matt- Used the angle grinder for the heavy rust removal then the belt sander to flatten out the chisel! =D
I wish we had meet ups like this in the bay area
What grit disk(s) do you typically use for projects like this?
Jason - I started with 40 on the discs then went to 120 and 320 on the belt sander!
ScoutCrafter - Thank you! Great job on it too.
nice job I have a couple like that I need to get to.
I wish you would post the next few swap meetings at the Smithtown location. I live pretty close and would love to attend.
Bobby Come down in April! 4th Wednesday! 😃👍
Love the old tool community better than the new tool community nicer tools plus not as many trolls and the chizzel came out great
Larry I agree 100% The trolls are the worst!
It’s too bad you guys don’t have Buc-ees up there. You’d never want to leave! 🧯🧰🇺🇸👍🏻
nice pretty job
Wow, some nice steel in that chisel, can't go wrong for $5 :)
