Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower. It is certainly a bittersweet season.

I just found your channel, and I love these recommendations! Specifically you’ve really sold me on The Last Man-it sounds like the a fitting 2020 read. I’ve actually been questioning whether I’ll find another Mary Shelley novel as compelling as Frankenstein since I was underwhelmed by Matilda. Now I definitely want to give it a shot.
Love the idea for this series! I’ll be going back and watching your recommendations for previous seasons!

I would recommend a German author, Theodor Fontane, and his novel "Effi Briest". It´s is set in the late 19th century, an upper class young lady gets married to an ambitious man twice her age. This is all in accordance to her parents´ wishes, to social expectations of her time and it is fine with her as she is to young to know better. The newly-weds move to a small seaside town where the young lady gets quite bored until one day a dashing army officer arrives... Fontane ´s novel is not so much about love in the first place but about what it meant for people of that day and age to come to terms with their desires and conflicting social norms. It´s a deep, tragic and moving story. All the sympathy of the author lies upon his creations entangled in a net of rules that can´t really believe in, especially upon the young woman, Effi, who has to pay the price for inhumane social norms. It´s a novel full of wisdom and will make a wonderful read while the rain is drumming against the window pane.

I like your dual view of Autumn. I think I have lost the sense of it bringing new beginnings and educational aspirations. For me it is a season of fruitfulness and colour sliding into decay so more mournful. Lovely recommendations. I think Persuasion is the Austen that feels autumnal to me.

I've read Frankenstein 5 times now (I love it) and I need to read more by Mary Shelley! I've got to read The Last Man by her.

I'm sure you will enjoy it! I've only read Frankenstein once, but it's a classic I definitely want to reread in the future.

We don't have real autumn in Hawaii. It is October now and it feels like the hottest part of Summer. We only have a rainy and dry season. However I was brought up in New York where I loved autumn and your video brought that back to me. I've read all the Jane Austen books you mentioned, and I particularly liked Sense and Sensibility because of the atmosphere. I've never read Mary Shelly and I admit I'm not that tempted, but I'm about to read The Picture of Dorian Gray for the first time. I think I saw a movie based on the book and didn't care for it, but I'm ready to read it for victober. I especially enjoy the way you describe and review books. You bring them to life without spoilers. Have a wonderful victober. Aloha

I didn't like Frankenstein but I'll give The last man a try anyway. I'm very much interested by A room of one's own by Virginia Woolf, you really made me want to read it. And, by the way, Jane Eyre is my favourite novel of all times :) Thanks for the recommendations and the interesting - as usual - video.

The Last Man is quite different to Frankenstein, but much more long-winded.

A favorite autumn read of mine, which I revisit every few years (hm, about time for another) is "The Wicked Lady" by Magdalen King-Hall, about a female highwayman. It was made into a good movie in the 40s and a terrible one in the 70s.

The highwaywoman's ghost haunted the manor for centuries after her death!

The first author I thought about when I saw the title of this video was Mary Shelley. I haven't read The Last Man yet, but I'll put it on my TBR now. Have you read Walden by Henry David Thoreau? That book is on my TBR for this month and somehow the themes of solitude and introspection that I see in the synopsis give me autumnal vibes.

@@SpinstersLibrary Quick update: I started reading it a few days ago but DNF'ed it. I was not in the mood for the 'poor little rich boy' narrative. I know that a lot of writers of the past used that, but I just couldn't deal with it right now. I don't want to say don't read it, but I thought I should let you know.

Hi, Claudia, I’ve read the first 4 and love them...so tomorrow I’ll check the library for 'The last man'. By the way: Do you know the book DIE WAND from Marlen Haushofer? The last woman...kind of😉. Stay autumnly happy🍁, Monika❣️

I definitely want to read The Last Man now; however, it seems a bit intimidating if it took you a while to wade through it. It seems worthwhile though. Cheers! I love your accent! I wish you could coach me. I abhor hearing myself on the playback! 😂

The Last Man is not exactly difficult or complicated, but very long and long-winded. Worth a try! Haha, thank you, my accent is pure German-who's-watched-too-much-Doctor-Who 😂

I can see why it's an autumnal read, but it's my least favourite classic😂
