Pure genius! I've been using my UA 1176 hardware for 2 years. I didn't know about the knees and different attack and release times at higher ratios. I used to just set mine to 4:1. Now I will experiment with the other ratios during recording.

Ryan, I bought my 76-A because of Charlie (c’mon, who’s more awesome than Charlie!) but I get the full benefit from it because of this tutorial. This particular 1176 from AudioScape is soooo versatile and there’s so much it does well. It was too much to wrap my head around at first and I struggled to use it effectively. Your lesson kind of broke through for me. Great teaching. You blend the practical with the academic in a cool way. AudioScape stuff is amazing out of the box, but I’ve taken it to another universe with the basic explanations you’ve given here. Great teaching, man, and thank you!
Thank you for your demo, compressors are such intuitive tools. The way you talked about ratios reminded me a lot of playing roulette or something. You gotta play your hand right if you’re putting it in the signal chain!
Thank You. Also found a difference in speed with different knee settings. Hard knee starts and let goes instantly, while soft knee - gradually. Maybe that's the reason.

So engaging two ratio buttons at the same time adds the ratio? I would think intuitively that it would find the halfway point between the two. Like if 12 and 20 were engaged it would create a 16:1 ratio. But its 32:1? That seems extreme but i don't have the unit so Im legitimately asking
Hey so when using real analog compressors and you have one compressor using it on multiple tracks, how does a person do a guitar and then do vocals and go back and forth? Do you have to basically cement a track and leave it in stone in order to move on with other tracks to use the gear? Otherwise you’d have to keep redialing in the settings every time you’re tryna use the compressor on different tracks? I know w a plugin you just load it on any track but with actual gear how would I mix multiple tracks and go between them with one compressor and essentially save the sound without making it permanently set like that? I appreciate any help thanks
